What's happening in Konstantinovka now , how realistic is it for Ukrainian troops to break through, and is the city being encircled? Ukrainian troops spoke to Suspilne about this .
According to Kurt & Company group commander of the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after the Knights of the Winter Campaign, call sign Kurt, the Russians are constantly attempting to storm both Ukrainian infantry and individual positions in Konstantinovka.
"Heavy fighting and firefights are taking place throughout the city, but we still control most of it, and the enemy is mostly on the flanks. They're trying to outflank us, cut us off, but we're holding our ground there. We're constantly under attack from the KAB—they're simply wiping out our positions with aerial bombs. This is the only thing that's still bringing success to the Russians, and it's a major problem for us," he said.
The press service of the 36th Marine Brigade, operating in this area, reported that the boundaries of the combat zone—that is, the territory under constant fire from both sides—in Kostiantynivka are provisional and constantly changing. This depends on the activity of FPV drones, artillery, and aircraft.
"The most dangerous areas remain open terrain, logistics routes, and approaches to the city, where the enemy is trying to make the movement of personnel, equipment, and ground robotic systems as difficult as possible," they noted.
According to them, the enemy has long since abandoned large-scale mechanized assaults and is relying on the infiltration tactics of small infantry groups.
"At the same time, it's difficult to even call them 'groups,' as they often move alone or in pairs—they're trying to find potential weak spots in the Ukrainian units' formations, actively exploiting terrain features, destroyed buildings, and the greenery," the press service noted.
Kurt argues that the problem is that the Russians infiltrate one or two at a time, disguise themselves as civilians, easily blend in with the "civilians" in the basements, and therefore are very difficult to identify:
"I think up to a thousand civilians in Kostiantynivka are still hiding in basements, maybe less. Kostiantynivka is being wiped off the face of the earth; the town is practically non-existent, destroyed. And the houses that are still standing are just boxes."
Meanwhile, the Russians are attempting to establish continuous fire control on the main roads leading to Konstantinovka, not only using artillery but also FPV drones. According to the military, the city is not yet isolated.
"It's still incorrect to talk about Kostyantynivka being semi-encircled. The flanking areas remain the most tense, as the enemy is attempting to encircle the city rather than launch a frontal assault. At the same time, the areas held by units of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade and other components of the Ukrainian Defense Forces remain under the control of Ukrainian forces," the 36th Marine Brigade's press service assured. Kurt confirmed that "the road to Konstantinovka is an attraction."
"This means you can leave and never return. My unit hasn't suffered any casualties during deployments. However, deployments vary in length. It depends on the position you need to reach and the cargo you need to deliver. A soldier's stay in position depends on the intensity of enemy reconnaissance and shelling. We can remain there for anywhere from ten days to a month. I think we'll have to hold off the Russians in Konstantinovka for a long time. But in war, even a single day can be 'long,'" the soldier added.
