In occupied Crimea, the Russian occupiers have deployed numerous military installations, which the Ukrainian Defense Forces regularly attempt to strike. If Ukrainian weapons fail to reach the launchers, they could strike other military targets.
As aviation expert Valery Romanenko, a leading researcher at the State Aviation Museum, reported on the program "News Factory ," there is no such concentration of military facilities in the Bryansk region.
Romanenko explained that the frequent air raid sirens in Kyiv are due to the fact that when a launcher for S-400 anti-aircraft missiles or Iskander-M ballistic missiles is detected deploying, it is impossible to predict their operational mode. These launchers can be deployed without launching missiles as part of exercises to maintain Russian military readiness. Romanenko also described how the Russians use launchers for Iskander-type missiles.
"The Iskander moves to combat positions from its permanent deployment areas, moving to combat positions up to 50 kilometers away from its temporary or even permanent deployment area. 50 kilometers is over an hour's drive, plus 20 minutes for deployment and launch," Romanenko said.
According to him, if Ukrainian defenders notice such activity on the part of Russians, they may respond.
He also noted that the situation is more complicated with anti-aircraft systems that launch training missiles. "They typically move much faster, and perhaps that's why alarms occur more frequently. They're simply more compact. They're mounted on a truck or tracked chassis. They take less time to deploy, and when satellites detect increased activity, they alert us," the aviation expert said. "Because we essentially only know their position 20 minutes before launch. They've already deployed, but we can't cover areas with drones. These aren't multiple launch rocket systems. They've deployed, and we have 20 minutes. During that time, we need to determine more or less precise coordinates or obtain them from our allies... and prepare our attack drone unit, which is in the area, for launch," Romanenko said.
He also noted that the Russians are launching primarily from the Bryansk region. However, one of the Russian divisions launching ballistic missiles was destroyed.
According to him, strikes by the Ukrainian Defense Forces against Russian launchers are carried out when there is an opportunity to respond. "The main thing is to get there within 20 minutes, because the drone doesn't fly that fast. We're talking about 150 km/h," Romanenko added. The expert noted that there is a difference in the ability to destroy launchers in occupied Crimea and in the Bryansk region.
In Crimea, in particular, this is easier to do because Ukrainian defenders regularly launch missiles there due to the large concentration of occupation military facilities.
"Because something's always flying there. If a launcher doesn't get caught, a target will be found. There's a large concentration of military units, military installations, and air defense facilities there. Attack drones could be kept on standby there at all times," Romanenko said.
However, there is no such concentration of Russian military facilities in the Bryansk region.
"The Bryansk region is worse off because there's no such concentration there, and these units are located at least a hundred kilometers away. Launch sites there are typically 50-70 kilometers away, and drones don't have time to reach them," the expert emphasized. Moreover, in his opinion, if the Russians continue to launch anti-aircraft missiles from the Bryansk region, the Defense Forces will try to find ways to destroy them. For example, Ukrainian defenders have already managed to destroy a surface-to-air missile launcher 40 kilometers from the border. According to Romanenko, the primary purpose of the Ukrainian FP-7 missile could be to destroy Russian launchers. "This is not a missile that would target deep-lying targets," the expert added.
He recalled that at first they said that the maximum range of the FP-7 missile would be 150 km, but now they say it is 250 km.
