This report just revealed the SHOCKING truth...
Jul 17, 2026
The shocking truth behind Steve Eisenman stepping down as GM of the Red Wings has been revealed
and we get a major report revealing why the relationship between him and Larkin soured.
But not only that, the next move for the Red Wings has been revealed as everyone is speaking
out about who will become the next general manager of this team.
We're going to break that all down and many more updates on this episode of Red Wings
Digest.
But before we jump into all of that guys, a quick reminder to hit that subscribe button.

So if you didn't, you know, see it yesterday, somehow, if you're a Red Wings fan or even
just a hockey fan in general, Steve Eisenman has officially stepped down as general manager
of the Detroit Red Wings.
And you can see this from Elliott Friedman early yesterday morning in a shocking development.
Yes, he has stepped down, but he is still going to be on board as a senior advisor and
he's actually going to be helping with the hiring process.
Now we can talk about that in a different video because that is a whole different can
of worms.
I mean, why would you allow the guy who was just the GM to still hire or be involved in
the hiring process of the next GM?
Because he's probably just going to pick somebody with similar philosophies, even though they
want to go in a different direction.
But anyway, we'll save that for a different video.
We learned this morning in a brand new report that things soured a couple of years ago between
Dylan Larkin and the organization and Steve Eisenman specifically because, and again,
this is just what has come out from this outlet this morning.
It began after Henrik Zetterberg retired and Larkin wasn't named Red Wings captain for
over two years.
So Mark, what do you make of this new report?
Because it is pretty crazy.
And yes, we will get into Brandon Shanahan and who's going to be the next general manager
in a bit.
Stay tuned for that.
But what do you make of this new report this morning?
Because things are starting to come to light and it seems that we are headed towards a
Dylan Larkin trade.
But I wonder if him stepping back down as GM changes anything.
Looking at the fact that he wasn't named captain, I mean, hindsight's a great thing.
But looking back at it now, a guy demanding to be out after being named captain, of course,
this team has a lot of flaws.
You miss the playoffs for almost every single year of Dylan Larkin's career.
He has more HL playoff games in the NHL than he does in the NHL, of course.
But of course, with him looking to move out, maybe being named captain, maybe Stevie, while
I seen something in the future with this crystal ball, of course, making the playoffs wasn't
in that ball.
But this is now a team that's looking at a big change.
They're looking at the new pitcher and going back to like you said, if you're looking for
a complete change and the way they put the leadership transition statement out at first,
I thought it was Dylan Larkin was being stripped from captain.
But if you're doing a leadership transition into a new era, keeping the guy around that,
of course, led that past era, the eyes are playing.
Keeping him around does feel weird, but with it sour between Larkin and Steve, it felt
like it was a dirty secret that every single person in the world knew.
We knew those two did not get along.
We knew that they couldn't really coexist.
And with the ongoing trade talks with people unsigned with Patrick Kane looking to go to
a new team, which is a completely different video.
This is feels like ownership looked and said, Steve, listen, you lost the room.
You lost a lot of these guys.
Him stepping down feels like a very polite way of not firing him and keeping them within
the organization.
But with this in particular, it feels like we're slowly going to get more information
on how things sour.
And Darius, honestly, looking at this, I could see this being a legitimate reason why Dylan
Larkin maybe had that few between the two.
And there is more information.
I want to get to that in a second, but before we do, this video is brought to you by prize
picks and prize picks is America's number one sports picks app that brings you closer
to all the action on a daily basis.
We'll get into some fun picks and promotions later on in this episode, so stay tuned for
that, but make sure to download the app using the link in the description and using the
promo code digest when you do.
So as you get $50 instantly in your lineups, when you play your first $5, but I want to
get back to it and I want to move on to Brendan Shanahan a second because everyone is talking
about it.
But listen, we're for this relationship to have soured over Dylan Larkin, wanting the
captaincy immediately.
That's not a good look for Dylan Larkin.
I'm just going to say it like that's not a good look.
That really is not.
And you could tell that things have soured.
Like you said, it was the worst kept secret ever without even knowing this.
I mean, look at the last few years, the comments from Dylan Larkin about how our GM is sitting
on his hands.
Like the team wasn't good enough and that is Heisman's fault, obviously, but the team
at the trade deadline was not good enough and they went out and they only got Justin
Falk.
We know that they needed centers to compete in this Eastern conference at this year's
trade deadline if they were serious, but I don't think that they were serious because
they realized this team's not good enough.
Five on five.
We're not going to make any difference in the playoffs.
We're going to probably bow out in five games to whoever we end up playing.
So you know, I was very critical of Steve Eisenman right around the trade deadline,
you know, earlier in the season, all of that stuff, that's for sure, because yes, the team
is not good enough.
But we know, my point is, we know that this relationship soured a while ago because of
the comments Dylan Larkin has been making the last two years saying our GM is not giving
us a chance to win.
And it seems like, listen, if that's true, again, that report, that is a horrific look
for Dylan Larkin.
I'm just saying that because nothing is given in this league.
Even if it's obvious, nothing is given in this league.
So that is pretty crazy.
But anyway, the search for the new general manager is underway, I guess at this point
you can see this from Chris Illich, he said, clearly we're not where we or our fans expect
us to be as an organization.
I'm looking forward to bringing in new leadership to build the championship caliber organization
HockeyTown deserves.
Now, a lot of people, including Elliott Friedman, and he put it out there first yesterday, are
talking about Brendan Shanahan, obviously the link to, you know, Brendan Shanahan won
a Stanley Cup in Detroit, former Detroit Red Wing.
Mark, what do you make of this?
Because man, I have some thoughts and I just, I wonder how fans feel about this so far.
But this is a guy whose name keeps popping up because he was in the running for the GM
and president position in New Jersey that didn't end up coming to fruition.
And now everyone's talking about this position with the Red Wing.
The Iser plan was a complete failure in Detroit.
Of course, there's a lot of young guys that can take that next step and really make an
impact in the NHL.
Maybe five years from now, we look back and say the Iser plan actually had a lot of guys.
Maybe it took 15 years, but we have good players within the organization with Brendan Shanahan's
name.
The Shanahan plan, once again, didn't work when he was last in the NHL.
And in my opinion, listen, he's a legend within Detroit.
He's been on the team.
He's won a cup, but at the end of the day, his track record, once again, doesn't show
any success.
Of course, you can blame this on players that he had a part of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.
But as a whole, I feel like this is a team that you're going to have to look for a fresh
name, a fresh face, maybe someone that comes in with this analytically driven background.
A lot of general managers are doing this.
You look over in Florida, they won two Stanley Cups with now New Jersey's general managers
and the analytically driven guy that helped them get to that success.
You look at a lot of teams that are succeeding, they're leaning into that.
But with Brendan Shanahan, Darius, I know you have a lot to say on him, but in my opinion,
I think you need to broaden the search and maybe Shanahan comes in as a president.
You have Steve just above him and then you bring in another GM.
But that just feels like a record of Steve telling Shanahan to tell the next guy what
to do.
And then you're stuck in the same loop we've been stuck in for the past 10 years.
Exactly.
Exactly that.
And I want to piggyback off that.
But before I do, Elliot Freeman did allude to the fact that maybe Sean Horkoff could
be in the mix.
Chris Draper as well.
But like you said, they need to widen their search.
And if we're hearing rumblings of Brendan Shanahan, and it gets louder over the next
couple of days, and then he ends up getting hired.
That is the absolute disaster.
I do not think that Brendan Shanahan is the man for this job.
Now, I do teeter on things sometimes in terms of do people deserve a second chance?
Yes, absolutely.
Right.
And I think that Brendan Shanahan will work in the league again.
But if you want a guy who's going to sit on his hands and be tentative and make moves
that are, you know, out of fear, right?
He's operating in fear.
If you want a guy like that, that is exactly what he showed everyone in Toronto operating
in fear.
And that trickles down to your team, to your players.
He would sit on his hands in terms of big decisions.
And then at trade deadlines, he would say, we can't compete in this conference, we need
a right shot defenseman.
And then he would go out and trade for any right shot defenseman and make horrific trades
and override the GM and override the rest of the staff, even though everything that
they're saying goes against the moves that he wanted made.
So if you want a guy like that, as the general manager of the Detroit Red Wings, then sure,
hire Brendan Shanahan.
He did some great work in Toronto on the business side.
But if we're talking about just the general manager, and then Steve Eisenman is still
over top of him as a senior advisor, that is a recipe for disaster.
That is all I'm going to say.
And that's how I feel about it.
You guys let us know how you feel in the comments below.
And listen, it could go well, maybe he's learned from his mistakes.
But if you want a guy who operates in fear, who is tentative, and will make moves just
because he thinks you need to add another one piece to the blue line, or one piece to
the center position at a trade deadline, even though there's way bigger problems with the
team, then that's your guy.
And that is just not a recipe for success.
But before we wrap up here, this video is brought to you by PrizePix, and PrizePix is

But very quickly before I throw it over to you, I am going to go more on La Mina Mall
goals.
You need to have a moment and what a better time than to have it in the World Cup final.
So Mark, do you have any final thoughts on the World Cup?
I mean, I'd go more on that as well.

Yeah, and it seems like we finally found out the truth as to why the relationship between
Steve Eisenman and Dylan Larkin has soured, or at least where it began.
And let us know in the comments, do you want Brendan Shanahan as the new GM?
Because I don't think that's a good idea.
