We have a shocking new Detroit Red Wings update
revolving around Simon Edvinson as multiple NHL
insiders have just revealed what's happening behind
the scenes with the contract negotiation
with the player wanting one thing
and the team wanting something completely different. Things
have continued to progress to snowball to a point
that the player requested a trade but some of
these new updates reveal that there could be light
at the end of the tunnel for Simon Edvinson
and staying with the Red Wings
and good news for Red Wings fans we're going to break down some of
these new updates what insiders
are saying what's actually happening behind the scenes with these
contract negotiations that have been drawn out
to this point we're almost in November and we have a
December 1st deadline to sign RFAs we're going to break that all down
and much more in this episode
of Red Wings Digest but before we get into all
of that a quick reminder to hit that subscribe button
Mark and I are giving you guys daily updates
on everything that's happening with the Red Wings so
make sure that you do hit that subscribe button
so you don't miss a single thing that's going on
with the Red Wings and thank you
so much for 5,000 subscribers that happened last week we're
almost at 6,000 subscribers so thank you
so much for the support here on the channel everybody
commenting the support and the viewership every
single day we're going to continue bringing you
guys updates on everything that's happening including
this one on Simon Edvinsson today
where they've met in person Mark they've met face
to face Simon Edvinsson is back I don't know if
You guys missed it, but last week we covered it on the channel.
He flew back from Sweden.
He is skating back on the East Coast again.
Now, him, and him being Simon Edvinsson, his agent, J.P. Barry,
and interim general manager of the Detroit Red Wings, Sean Horkoff,
met in person, face-to-face,
about three to four days ago, according to Pierre LeBrun.
Now, this is great news
because meeting in person tells me that there is still a bridge here
to get a contract done for him to stay at Red Wings.
He was also skating recently in his Red Wings gear,
which i don't know if that really means anything at this point
because it's just here but um you
know this to me still you can still see a bridge here where
this can get done and not like literally
a bridge deal figuratively i'm saying there
is still a way that this contract can get done so
Mark, do you have any thoughts on this? We have
a bunch of other updates to get to including
Dylan Larkin by the way i didn't even mention
that brand new update on Dylan Larkin as well
but do you have any thoughts on this because i think
this is really good news and points towards
the organization's doubling down you know what let's get
this done let's stop playing games and
i think that's good news now i don't know you know
if they're still playing some games because
you know the way this team has operated for the last
while at this point but do you have any
thoughts on that you said it perfectly if you're looking
at this from the outside if they weren't
going to meet if he flew back to North America he was training
and kind of shut down interviews or
at least shut down speaking to them in person
then you feel like okay there's absolutely no chance in
hell that this kid signs this contract
but at least with this we know they're meeting face to
face there's not bad tension or bad blood
which there probably still is a tiny bit but at
least there is some decency between the two sides
that are willing to work on a meeting in person
you can have that heartfelt conversation you can have
those conversations without it being over
text or word of mouth from your agent i like
the direction this is trending in is it gone on too
long god yes it's october middle of october past middle of october
and we're still talking about
this but at least with this they have no interest
in trading we knew that he wants to be here of
course the reports of wanting to be out
and everything maybe this is tactic coming through
from his agent at the end of the day at least
the face-to-face gives us a bright light at the end of
the tunnel hopefully shorter tunnel than we expected
because it's gone on too long already
but this is a team that needs to get it done
because not only is this a young guy you want
to retain and keep on your roster he's a big part of it
and going to be a big part on how they make
the push to hopefully make it into the playoffs
and we are 12 days away from being one month away
which is a weird way of saying it
but 12 days away from being one month away from the deadline
where if you don't get this signed
which isn't too far-fetched to imagine at this point he's missed
almost a month of this season to this point um to him
to get him signed if you miss that december
first deadline which we know the red wings
are awful awful with deadlines if you miss it he
misses the entire season you lose an entire season of him
which is just awful you also lose a season
of his rfa status on a contract if you sign up
to go long term it wouldn't really matter you become
an rfa uh or ufa excuse me at the end
of that seven-year contract anyway but uh still you you
lose even if you want to go a little bit shorter
and you end up on something that's maybe five
years six or something like that you lose some rfa years there
but anyway um you know who he
plays with this guy's a phenomenal player i mean
i don't even know if we need to dive into this we
do it all the time i mean simon evans is a huge part of this team
and um you know if you're a
Red Wings fan, if you're a Red Wings fan
of course you want this guy to stay and of course
you want to get this contract signed
this organization needs to stop playing games. Is
he asking for a lot of money? Yeah
but a lot of players are... this is a top pairing defenseman in
a league where top pairing defensemen like Quinn
Hughes, like Makar and a few others are going
to start getting 20 plus million dollars a year
and he's asking for 11, he's asking for 11 and the
cap's going to continue to rise
and you have the cap space to make it work. I mean your only notable
signings coming up here are probably Emmett Finn, MBN right? I might
be missing another Marco Kasper
maybe but outside of that you don't have any guys
that are going to be eating up a huge chunk of the
cash uh and the cap and you know even
then what are they going to be making right? I don't think
it's going to be anything ludicrous
or anything like that so they need to get this guy
signed as soon as possible. Obviously the team's preference
is to get him signed, they would rather
not trade him and Steve Yzerman came out the day after
those Edmonton reports came out that you
know he wanted to be traded uh he basically came out the day after
and said uh we have no interest
in trading him and we want him to be a Red Wing
so some negotiating through the media as well and
Mark, you mentioned that too
so that is definitely a huge factor in all of this but uh you know from
Jeff Merrick too I know uh that he wasn't thrilled about
the first offer that they made by the way
the first offer came I think the day after
the deadline for the eight-year contract uh because
that's when interim general manager Sean Horkoff
was appointed again being bad with deadlines just
awful um and it's felt like it just hit a level
of frustration with the organization that has now led
to that trade request even if you even want
to call it that I think it's just like really
frustrated with where he wants something
that's closer to what he deems is fair right so again
really really good player now we have another update
to get to but before we do that Mark any
final thoughts on Simon Edvinsson
because it sounds like you know the fact that they met in
person I think is really positive we want
to keep it somewhat positive everything to this point has
been butchered but it sounds like they're putting
you know some processes in place they're doing
their due diligence to actually get this done
and make the player feel like we want I mean if you
lock him up to 10 or 11 million dollars you're still paying
a combined of 20 million dollars
for one of the top pairings in the entire NHL
and when you look around like you said Kale Makar
20 million dollars Quinn Hughes is going
to get north of that as well you're paying two elite
defensemen that stay on that top pairing, what other teams
are paying and listen I'm not saying
even so is Quinn Hughes or Cale Makar
but when looking in a vacuum two of those players are
worth more than one of them
so just get the damn deal done get this kid in it's going to be hard
enough for him to get into game shape
and get him up to the speed because we know it's notorious if
you're missing a lot of time of course he came to camp
which is a huge step but he's not in a lot of
players are going to be 10 to 15 games into the season
when we see hopefully his first game
So at the end of the day, you've got to get this signed
And at least we're getting traction
And the fact they're meeting
That there's some positive signs
Finally coming out of this organization
And positive signs on the ice too
We covered that yesterday with their 5-on-5 play
Improving a little bit and some great performances
from you know and some of the younger guys too
Last update here for this one
Phil LeBrun doubts that Dylan Larkin
By the way, Phil LeBrun has had a lot of stuff
In the Red Wings through the offseason
Into the actual season
Doubts that Dylan Larkin is basically going to stay a Red Wing
He thinks that there's going to be a trade here,
and he said that Steve Yzerman, I think, hopes to change Dylan
Larkin's mind over time and have him want to stay in the trade.
Which, by the way, if it's soured so much to this point,
and we don't know exactly what's happened behind the scenes, but I
think we all have a good idea of what's happened behind the scenes.
If it's soured to this point, I don't see a world where he does stay.
Like, what are you still trying to convince him to stay for?
I know he's a great player, but you're going to lose pretty
much any trade anyway with him to try to get some assets back.
although if you do get what has been reported
that they're asking for that's not bad i think
that would be a good trade
but um they want to see if he wants to stay in Detroit which i don't
think is realistic myself
and again that's Pierre LeBrun saying that multiple other insiders saying
the same thing too um and so far
this season started really hot first two games he played
after that they've been better without him
on the ice we talked about that yesterday too and
um you know he has a lot of years left
on his contract uh you know it's something where he
can request a trade and just like Connor Hellebuyck
like hey buddy you're not going anywhere unless we
get exactly what we want
so that's uh kind of where they're at right now with Dylan Larkin and
with uh a lot of different decisions that they have to make
which is uh trying but not good
enough so uh we'll see how that continues
to progress the rest of the way this season last
thing i'll mention too it is going to be a wild ride
in the eastern conference market not just
in the eastern conference the atlantic division
for the most part in this season the red wings
have been dead last a little bit
of a spike they put up some you know a decent performance against
the San Jose Sharks but they find themselves
at the end of the night on October 19th and
reporting this on October 20th last place in the Atlantic Division
however they're right there I
mean if you win a couple games you're right back
into like fourth place basically right not even
like above that so um they're right in there it's going
to be one of the toughest divisions in the
entire sport this season so we'll see how that progress
but guys let us know in the comments
how you feel about everything we discussed today how
do you feel about the Red Wings being last in
the Atlantic Division Simon Edvinsson new updates
on that and it sounds like Dylan Larkin will not
remain a Red Wing it just depends on when
that trade is going to go through
