Things are picking up VERY fast...
Oct 16, 2026
Things are picking up very quickly for the Detroit Red Wings.
After finally officially signing Alex DeBrinket to a contract extension,
we get major updates on Simon Edvinson from multiple NHL insiders,
and Sean Horcoff, the interim general manager,
finally speaks out on what's happening with Dylan Larkin
and some insight into the Simon Edvinson situation
and what the team is planning to do with him and the contract.
We're going to break that all down
and much more in this episode of Red Wings Digest.
But guys, before we jump into all of that, a quick reminder,
to hit that subscribe button we've noticed
that a large percentage of you guys who watch these
videos on a regular basis are not subscribed to the channel
so if you want to stay up to date
with everything that's happening with the Red Wings
on a daily basis Mark and I are here giving
you guys daily updates on everything that's happening
with the Red Wings and of course today
we get some new news from 32 Thoughts on what's happening
with Simon Edvinson but before that we
have the fallout from Sean Horcoff finally doing something
and signing Alex DeBrinket to a
contract extension of course we found out
yesterday 13 million dollars over seven years
eight points so far this season he's
been really really good out of the gate along with a couple
other players I actually think Dylan Larkin's
been pretty good ironically out of the gate but
Alex is everything we want in a Red Wing
that is from Sean Horcoff the interim general manager of
the Detroit Red Wings and Alex DeBrinket
also spoke out and said I really believe in what we're
trying to build here so Mark any final thoughts
on the contract extension I think we both agree
that it's really really good value we see other outlets kind
of still dumping on the Red Wings for
it taking so long and maybe dumping on Alex
to bring it a little bit not here to do that Michigan
boy who wants to be a Red Wing got paid a fair amount
for what he brings to a team and I'm glad
that they got it done well before a trade deadline let's say
for example and with the rising cap roll
this is going to be a contract that looks good now it's going
to look good in the future and
even better as the years go
on and here I've seen some people talk about it genuinely maybe
this is the next captain of the Red Wings
if he continues to trend in the right direction he wants
to be here from here but at the end
of the day I think it's an awesome deal and thankful Sean
Horikov finally got was able to do something within
this organization yeah because like that's
been over everyone's heads for a while can he actually
do something they said he could but
you haven't yet now we have another update
on Simon Edvinsson he remains frustrated
with what's happening with his contract negotiations
this morning on 32 Thoughts
Elliot Friedman revealed that he's heard
that uh it's just taking too long and that's what's
frustrating him and he would prefer a trade
at this point he just wants to play hockey right
that's what it sounds like
and um Elliot Friedman went on to say that it's just not as easy as
saying go to sleep and you'll feel better
in the morning there's been too many sleeps that's going
to be an all-time quote if he ends up getting traded
by the way there's too many sleeps so
uh Mark what do you make of this new report
because for me with the Simon Edvinson situation
i don't understand with a grand slam sitting
in front of you if we could take it to a baseball
analogy it was a grand slam
when you finally had a GM in place to get this done it was the easiest
move of all time to get this done honestly like
you're gonna pay him a lot and it's gonna be a
long-term contract but those are all good things over
the course of the long term because of where
the cap is going and what other players
are getting paid right now it was a slam dunk a home run a
break away and you and you fumbled it and now he's frustrated
and wants to leave and i think that's
ridiculous another quote from friedman as well
was that Horakoff has more credibility today than
he had yesterday so he went from zero credibility
to a tiny bit of credibility it's awesome to see
but at the end of this i don't blame all
of this on Sean Horakoff of course it falls back on
ownership something we've preached for quite some time
but you had a guy that was willing to get a
long-term deal done before we seen all
these huge deals signed throughout the NHL now you're
handcuffed with a guy that's saying hey I'm still
not signed I'm not happy I want to be out of here
you have now not an eight-year window you can sign him to the seven
but the Red Wings apparently
don't even want to do this and they're lowballing
the kid I don't get it at all they could save face
with this get Edvinsson signed to a deal bring him back
to this organization let him ride it out
he's made it clear that of course he wanted
to be here before this whole debacle happened around
this team but this is a guy that came to camp he came
to camp without a damn contract risking
losing out on this season if an injury happened he'd make no money
because no one's going to sign
a guy that's dealing with an injury throughout
the entire year looking at the advanced stats
it's a good hockey player a young hockey player
a player you have the rights of right now the fact
you don't have this signed dearest again i'm losing
a lot of words without cursing a storm up but
this team needs to get their ---- in order at this point
because Edvinsson's gonna come to the
point of demanding hey i do not care what you offer me i'm
not coming back and you're not only
resetting the season where you're a worse team now
but it's going to make the future look even
more bleak than it currently
is and you brought it up too i had it up here on screen they are
such a better team with him in the lineup i mean
the numbers don't lie right like look at this they
are so much better with him in the lineup goals
for expected uh expected uh four percentage uh also
i i didn't even realize the 17th in the league
and block shots last season like he does it all
he does it all and he wants
to get paid he should get paid he should get paid it's the same thing
with Alex Ovechkin oh he's gonna make a lot
of money yes he's a good player good players make
a lot of money you got to sign them lock them up
long term now let us know in the comments how you
feel about that but Sean Horcoff
also spoke on Dylan Larkin which is interesting because we
haven't really gotten like a full press conference i guess
on that whole situation where you actually
got substance and actual insight
into the situation what's happening right now because
we got that one earlier in the in the preseason
but there was no substance there right so a couple
other uh updates here before we get into that though
from Elliot Friedman as well on Horcoff
he has the juice to get things done now
because he got that contract extension done with Alex
DeBrincat sure man let's see it Edvinson
is super frustrated of course Horcoff has talked
to other teams but the price apparently is very very high
and their main priority is resigning
him and Montreal slightly changed the equation
but not enough uh the list has not changed for
Dylan Larkin speaking of Dylan Larkin it's
been a rough month uh for him obviously coming in the
boos you know the boos turned to cheers it's
been an interesting month and John Horcoff kind
of spoke about that and i want to read some
of this quote as well he was also speaking about how
the injury came at an inopportune time which is true
because even you know people like ourselves
here on this show were coming out
and saying oh yeah he's not actually hurt he's faking it and
all that type of stuff we did do that and i apologize
for that he was actually hurt but
um you know Dylan Larkin has been really really good
so far this season uh as well so he's it's
not that he's put everything behind him i'm sure
he still wants to trade but he's going out there
he's doing his job and for that and and for putting himself
in front of Red Wings fans on
night one even though he was hurt on the bench i
do respect him for that too if that was his
decision i do respect all of these things
but mark what do you make of some of this because
again he's playing very well uh
so far to start this season the red wings are not playing very
well to start this season and um you know a lot
of people are talking about you know in the comments
of our videos maybe it's time to just pull
the trigger trade him to the Minnesota Wild i think
it's going to come down to genuinely
if we can see Shawn Horcoff have the ability to do this because
of course ownership's probably going to have
a huge say in it they want to be competitive
and how much is this really leaning back
on Chris Ilitch saying hey we want a one-tee back for
Dylan Larkin which is not going to happen this is a team
and the way Dylan Larkin's playing I
respect the hell out of him coming out like you said taking the booze
and dealing with that going
on the ice we see Connor Huberdeau we fall back
on this constantly sitting out and not showing up to
Jets camp anything in between he's not playing at all
and that's putting a hard spot for their GM
to move on from a guy if he's not playing if he's sitting
and just kind of stalling this thing but
Dylan Larkin is at least showing up
and every single night trying to help this team win we
see them getting in the scrums he's still fighting
for his teammates I respect that I don't respect
the whole short list that we've seen over the summer
but again as things drag on Darius and
I hate to even say it can we even blame the guy
for wanting to be out of this organization with
the way we're seeing things unfold with other free agents
the way that stories are coming out
that Chris Ilitch has the entire say around
the franchise again I wish Dylan Larkin was going to
be here but looking at everything that's coming out
with everything happening you've got to rip
the band-aid this felt like a move that should have
been done months ago but again you're at
this point he's in the locker room it doesn't seem dysfunctional
which is great which is a little bit
of a surprise as well but it feels like to bring it
an incredible signing by the way but i felt
like that was one of the things that would come after
the bigger moves that they have to make
and dylan larkin's right at the top
of the podium well i mean probably edvinson at this point because
you thought he would be signed by now
but with dylan larkin you need to actually revisit these
trades and actually look at it in a clearer space
of saying hey we're not getting a one c and i
think we need to take futures for this guy they need
to take a step back and reevaluate what they
want in a trade because what they want
in a trade doesn't exist right so i think they can try and
get some something of good value still i definitely think they can
but not what they're looking for
exactly based on reports that we've heard right
and also to make something clear too because you
said it there i mean chris ilitch does he's
the owner he can do whatever he wants like in theory
right he does have control of the team
but what i think you were trying to say too and i think how
we all feel is let people do their jobs let things
happen right like we need things to continue to
progress here and we need you to make uh to make moves
and when i say you i mean Sean Horkoff in
this in this spot he needs to be able to do things
and it's clear that Chris Ilitch isn't just
allowing anybody to do that right and vetoing things
and it just sounds like i don't know at
this point maybe Dylan Larkin's problem
was with Chris Ilitch right like a lot of people have been
talking about that too and a lot of people
also talking about Simon Evansoff just get it done get
it done i keep seeing that in the comments please
just bring him home just get the contract done so
guys let us know how you feel in the comments
below about everything that's happened the last
24 48 hours with Detroit Red Wings Alex
DeBrincat signs a great contract we're still waiting
on Simon Evansoff to be signed or traded
and some insight into what's happening lately with Dylan
