AI GeneratedThe Detroit Red Wings are grappling with front-office instability and a goaltending crisis. With an interim GM and inconsistent results, the team is weighing whether to trade John Gibson to the New York Rangers to acquire future assets, especially as young prospect Denis Tarasov shows significant promise and the team's playoff hopes fade.
Trade rumors and reports are continuing to escalate revolving around
the Detroit Red Wings and this time John Gibson as the goaltending
position within the Red Wings has just took a very interesting turn
and one Eastern Conference team has now been linked to John Gibson
and we're going to break that down as well as multiple other updates
on Todd McClellan, the rest of the coaching staff, Dylan Larkin,
what's happening with Simon Evans and all of this plays in together
is all roped in together with this organization and comments from Chris
Ilitch on what the plan is with a general manager
because of course they still have an interim
general manager in Sean Horcoff we're going to break
that all down and much more in this episode
of Red Wings Digest but before we jump into all
of that a quick reminder to hit that subscribe
button a large percentage of you guys
who watch these videos every single day are not subscribed
to the channel so if you want to stay up to date
with everything that's happening with the Red
Wings on a daily basis Mark
and I got you covered with everything that's happening around the Red
Wings now of course they played last night
and we're going to get into Tarasov and all of that
later on in the video let's get into some trade reports
of course first everybody wants to hear
that what's happening with John Gibson
but mark before we do that Chris Ilitch did an interview
with the fourth period and i thought there
was some very interesting stuff here because he said
that he was looking to hire a president
of hockey ops before a full-time general manager they are
doing some weird stuff and let me tell you it
is so abundantly obvious to me at this point that
they wanted the general manager of the Detroit Tigers
to jump ship to be the general manager of
the Detroit Red Wings he said no and then their whole plan fell through
the cracks and i thought a couple of
these quotes were interesting
because there's nothing here there's no substance again from
Chris Ilitch he said that Sean Horcoff is doing
a great job he's come in he's hit the ground running
it's a great opportunity for him it's
a great opportunity for me to see him in action and he's
been really good did a great job with Alex yeah
the only move that he's made and it should have
been a slam dunk same with Simon Evanson
which is still not done by the way so he's failing in that
respect Mark what do you make of this because he said he's
as frustrated as fans are
that's not true fans are way more frustrated than he
is because it is so obvious that a couple of
these moves were slam dunks
and they've continued to to not execute upon them and i feel like Sean
Horcoff is not even allowed to execute them i think
the best silver lining on this if you hire
someone in the president of hockey ops role maybe he gets
a tiny bit of say in their next general
manager so it's not Chris Ilitch getting a cheap option
that's going to come in and be a yes man
maybe you get someone that comes
in I know Jim Rutherford's name has popped up quite a bit there's
a lot of guys that could be linked to this position
and a lot of guys that genuinely could
step in and maybe be that middle ground between the owner
and the general managers we see it quite
a bit but at the end of the day the quotes again saying he's doing
an incredible job he's not given
a chance to do a job he made an easy signing
with a guy that wants to be here and even easier
signing is still not done yet
but at the end of it again i think the best part of this is is maybe
president of hockey ops comes in and actually gets a tiny bit of say
when it comes to hiring
their full-time general manager you'd like to think
that but nothing really suggests that that
will happen maybe maybe anything can happen i guess that's sports
but uh i don't think so with
this owner now let's get into the trade rumors
that are flying around is it a good idea is it
the cards to trade John Gibson now a lot
of people might be like whoa what are you talking about
let's get into it Mark
because right now John Gibson's in the last year of his 6.4 million
dollar contract it expires at the end of this year
and there's one team in particular and if
there was no injury to this team starting goaltender
this wouldn't even be a conversation
right now at least with this team
but it might have been a conversation for the Red Wings and
let's be honest let's be frank I know they won last night
the team has not started well and I
don't really know what the direction is for this team
and you have goaltenders in the system right
now so one team in particular could use John Gibson
and that is the New York Rangers Igor
Grissom's out for the season they are playing very well
and I don't think they want to waste
this opportunity I feel like they can go out
and acquire a goaltender now here's the thing with the
Red Wings from my point of view at least Mark
and let me know how you feel I feel like this actually
might be a good idea to target the Rangers here
because they got to see what's happening with
Dylan Larkin still and they're going to give
the kid a shot and they want to see how he bounces
back and i think it's a good idea for that team
to do that to see how he bounces back from a bad
loss but i think they're going to ride that out a little bit longer
but there might come a point
where they come knocking they come calling
and you have goaltenders in the system i don't know
if john gibson you know fits the timeline
of this team anymore as crazy as it is to say at this
point we thought that they were going to make the playoffs
and all that song and dance last couple
years so you have goaltenders
and you can trade him in the last year of his contract for future
assets I feel like it could actually be something
that works out for you know both teams here so
Mark I don't know if you have any differing opinions here
but I think this is something that
again it's picking up a lot on social media right now
because of how well Tarasov's playing
that maybe it's okay to move off John Gibson
at this point if this team continues to falter and
look like they're going to be out of the playoffs
by Thanksgiving I think the biggest thing is if
this is a Detroit team that's fully committed
into trying to make the playoffs no matter what the
cost is of course they want to flip Dylan Larkin
for first line center that's not going to happen
they want to flip Evenson for more pieces some could be futures
but they'd like to get some
roster guys back I think in a vacuum yes
this makes total sense your team that's not near the
top of the standings the New York Rangers desperately need
a starting goaltender though some of the
young guys have been playing well for them you still want
a solidified guy that's been there
done that has been around the NHL
so with this I think it depends on the options or what the
assets would be coming back and again looking at the Red Wings
because this is going to be a trade
that I think would be hey we're throwing it
in for the season we're looking for a top pick and how do
some of the guys within this team kind of take
that of course Dylan Larkin always wants out and
he doesn't want to be with this organization maybe
if you start winning games that changes but I think
with trading this it really depends on if you want to go into a rebuild
or rebuild or if you're
committed to winning which is definitely not the good idea
at this point because with the standings
the way the players are playing the way you haven't made moves
this is not a serious or competitive
team which is sad to say
and honestly with John Gibson there's a realistic opportunity where he
says hey I don't want to come back what's
the point I want to go contend I want to win a cup
maybe he signs with the team like the Rangers next season
but there is I think at this point as much as
I love John Gibson it's an asset that's expiring you might
as well get something for a guy that
could walk for absolutely nothing
and you said that the team hasn't really you know shown that
they're committed to winning which i think can be true it's
so weird because they haven't traded
Dylan Larkin, which says hey we don't want to trade you
for nothing and we want to keep you on the
team so we can be competitive but then on the other side
of things we haven't pulled the trigger on
Simon Evanson yet we're playing hardball
with them it's weird like it's hard to say that they've
committed to winning right because they haven't
really made that many trades and then the big
splash that we said they had to go out
and do at last on this channel at last year's trade deadline
to go out and get a center you ended up getting
Justin Faulk and then you missed the playoffs
anyway right so like i i don't know if you can say
that this team is committed to winning one
team that has been committed to winning this season
though is the New York Rangers and they
said no we're gonna figure this out whether it's with a goaltender
or like acquiring a goaltender
via trade or not which i think is interesting
but Shesterkin's out for the year and i just wonder
if they think Grant and Cronenworth
when he comes back from injury can carry the entire season load
i don't know Dylan Grant's never done it
and Corpus Salo is not that good they might come
calling at some point if they haven't already
Grant has some decent stats but i think this is
you know a scenario where by december they could be calling
and saying we want John Gibson what
would you like for John Gibson
so and John Gibson by the way like in terms of starts game over game
so far this season obviously you see a lot of red here
but league average is roughly .900
a .900 save percentage now it's way down uh
from what we know it to be you know he started the
season well and then it's kind of dropped off since
then but at the same time i don't even
know if you can fault the guy the guy
the goaltender specifically this is falling on the
team it's not a great team it's not well constructed there's
a lot of rookies here that you're hoping
we're gonna come into that you know
and fit into those roles nicely hasn't happened too seamlessly
yet it's early in the season
but with all the turmoil from the the summer and the way that
they've started compared to last year it's hard
to believe that they're going to be a playoff team
this year it's really hard to believe like i just don't see it
so um and again if you look at some
of the advanced analytics uh the verdict
is it's too early to say if you know it's if it's luck or
john gibson is not good or what it
is with the team we're only like you know handful of games
still into the season but it's very interesting
and when you're talking about you know the detroit
red wings as a team not as great you put john gibson john gibson
into the rangers system the
way that they're playing this year i feel like
there's value there for the rangers they would
be willing to spend some young assets
so and they got some great young defensemen they got some
great young forwards too whether it's in the ahl
or the nhl if you want to trade off the roster
it's definitely an option so people are starting
to talk about it and one reason i want your
thoughts on this too mark one reason a lot
of people are starting to talk about it is because
Denis Tarasov who was signed this offseason has started
the season very well he's rocking a .974
save percentage which is like not sustainable at all
but he's played two games and he's looked
really good so now people are starting to connect
the dots take advantage of situations around the
league trade John Gibson because it doesn't look like
this team has any direction let alone looks
like it's moving forward Denis Tarasov can take over
and then you have Michael Pastava and of
course Trey Augustine can be the starter
of the Grand Rapids Griffins and just continue his
development so i would agree with that sentiment i don't know
if you feel any differently but the
way he started i know it's a small sample size
um i think you at least start thinking about it
this trade might not happen today tomorrow next week
but it could around december i feel like
there could be something bubbling here yeah
if you get into christmas and this is a team that's
nowhere near the wildcard race
and again with the eastern conference this is one of the most
stacked eastern conference we've seen in quite some time there's
so many moves so many player
movements teams getting better teams like
the florida panthers that of course dealt with a lot
of injuries and still are but they got
their team back competitive there's so much just pushing
within this and with this team i think if you get
into christmas you're nowhere near a spot they're
gonna start selling guys which doesn't look great
because you bought last year and you didn't even
buy the preferred positions that fans and the team needed
but with this now with the young guys
pushing through with possible looking good
and of course with Tarasov being outstanding incredible
pick up fantasy by the way this is a team
that they need to make a decision and it's going to
come before the Christmas break at this point
in my opinion yeah definitely and i again it's coming
soon to try to take advantage here there's
no real direction to this team and again maybe wait
another week or two but try to take advantage
of another team that wants to make a move here now i
do want to introduce a new segment comment of the day
so make sure you guys are commenting down below
uh fans are talking about it playing Gibson over Tarasov
or after Tarasov didn't allow a single
goal and regulation is crazy Gibson's last game he allowed five goals
in a period and a half play
Tarasov so people are talking about it right now
this is a storyline guys let us know in the
comments how you feel would you trade John Gibson
if you were the Detroit Red Wings explore a trade
now or would you just keep him maybe even resign him next year
with what happened with uh Kassa as
well i think you'd look at a trade here
with John Gibson it just hasn't started well i i don't think
we expected anything different honestly you
and i mark here on the channel for how the season's gone
so far but i i think that no one really expected
the New York Rangers to possibly be in the market
for a goaltender exactly like this because they need somebody
who's on an expiring contract for
when Igor Shesterkin returns next season
because the implications that has on the salary cap but guys
let us know in the comments how you feel about
everything we discussed today would you trade
John Gibson are you confident
in Daniil Tarasov's start so far this season
and would you pick up the phone
from the New York Rangers and make a trade
