The US military conflict with Iran has resumed, with little sign that diplomacy can stop it.
Efforts by mediators to resume talks or restore a ceasefire have shown no signs of progress, and the general feeling is that fighting will continue, according to Politico sources.
The White House "isn't quite sure where this is going. It could go on for some time. There's a lack of trust between Iran and the United States, and that's essentially the foundation of any diplomacy," one U.S. official said. President Donald Trump has made it clear that Tehran must relinquish control of the Strait of Hormuz shipping lanes. However, Iran has withstood previous attacks, threatening tankers with drones and missiles, and it is unclear how the latest campaign of American strikes will address this threat.
At the same time, allies in the White House consider American retaliatory actions necessary.
Trump "has to respond when the Iranians break their promises, and I think that's exactly what he's doing. We can't return to equilibrium unless the Americans demonstrate their willingness to escalate as necessary," said Alex Gray, the National Security Council chief of staff during Trump's first term.
Meanwhile, the American military maintains a strong presence in the Middle East—further evidence of ongoing hostilities. The US maintains two aircraft carriers in the region, along with approximately 20 warships and a contingent of 2,500 Marines. Most of the ships are capable of launching long-range missiles, while combat aircraft and long-range rocket artillery remain stationed in friendly countries along the Persian Gulf.
"The arsenal is staying put," said one American official. "We're there, and we're rotating parts, but we're not going anywhere."
The situation remains tense, with no final, acceptable agreement on resuming shipping through the strait. Although just a month ago the US and Iran agreed to a memorandum of understanding aimed at halting hostilities, both sides have since accused each other of violating its terms on numerous counts.
While in Ankara, Türkiye, for a NATO summit this month, Trump announced an end to the ceasefire.
"I think it's over," he said just hours after US forces struck Iranian military targets in response to Iranian attacks on merchant ships. The UAE Ministry of Defence said two UAE-flagged oil tankers, the Mombasa and the Al Bahiya, were hit by two Iranian cruise missiles while transiting the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz in Omani territorial waters.
Both tankers were damaged in the attack, and the fires that broke out on board were quickly extinguished. According to authorities, the situation is completely under control. The UAE Ministry of Defense strongly condemned the incident, calling the strike a gross violation of international law and an action that poses a threat to regional security and stability.
The agency also stated that the country reserves the right to take any necessary retaliatory measures to protect its territory, population, sovereignty, and national interests, as well as to ensure the security of the state and its strategic facilities.
The UAE Ministry of Defense emphasized that its armed forces are on full alert and ready to respond to any potential threats. They also stated that they are taking all necessary measures to prevent any actions that could threaten the country's security and stability.
