Following a series of Ukrainian attacks, local residents in St. Petersburg are being recruited to form mobile air defense units. Candidates are being offered salaries of over $2,000 per month and promised not to be sent to the front, reports digi24 .

It is noted that military departments in St. Petersburg are publishing recruitment notices for mobile air defense groups. These advertisements promise a monthly salary of approximately 180,000 Russian rubles or approximately $2,350.

"This vacancy does not involve service in a 'special military operation' zone! Service takes place in units specializing in the protection and security of critical infrastructure facilities in St. Petersburg without travel outside the region," one of the ads states. Such advertisements also specify other contract terms, including a three-year term of service and eligibility for individuals between the ages of 18 and 52 who have passed a medical examination and meet other eligibility requirements.

The publication noted that Russian contract soldiers and conscripts, despite their commanders' promises, are still regularly sent to the front. Conscripts are being forced to switch to contract service to make it easier for them to fight in Ukraine. This is confirmed by some Russian occupiers and foreigners captured in Ukraine.

Earlier, analyst Jonathan Singh stated that Ukraine, by dealing a powerful blow to St. Petersburg, increases both the material and political costs of the war for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. The journalist notes that Ukrainian drone and missile strikes this weekend on a major oil storage facility and military base in Russia's second-largest city are increasing pressure on Russia's air defense and logistics capabilities and forcing the Kremlin leadership to make difficult decisions about which parts of the country to defend.

The article states that St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov said the city was subjected to a "large-scale" drone attack, but there were no casualties at the oil refinery complex. "The attack came just over a month after Ukraine launched a strike on the city during a major economic forum aimed at attracting foreign investment," Singh said.

According to the analyst, the humiliation of Russian President Vladimir Putin's hometown is part of a broader Ukrainian strategy aimed at increasing the costs of the war for the Russian people and its elites.

"Kyiv hopes that its enhanced ability to strike at the heart of Russian life will encourage allies, particularly US President Donald Trump, to provide additional vital defense systems needed to protect Ukrainian cities," Singh suggests.

It is noted that, like the attack on Moscow, the attack on St. Petersburg is an extreme humiliation for Putin, who tried to shield both cities from the reality of war. The analyst notes that the fact that they managed to strike a city so dear to Putin's heart and which is the historical capital of the Russian Empire demonstrates that the Ukrainian strategy is working – and that there are no safe places in Russia.

"I would probably say this is one of the most important developments we've seen in a long time. We're seeing the rapid development of the Ukrainian defense industry, accompanied by a clear strategic vision that's now bearing fruit and could potentially be a turning point in the war. This is a much more consistent implementation of Ukraine's strategy and strategic ambitions," noted Melanie Garson, Associate Professor of International Security at University College London.

Singh believes that the attack on St. Petersburg, which served as Russia's capital for two centuries from 1712 and is also the location of Putin's family estate, raises serious questions about the future course of the war for Putin.
