In Severodvinsk, the Russians withdrew a significant portion of the air defense systems that protected the shipyards that built and repaired nuclear submarines.
The Barents Observer reported this after analyzing satellite images from 2024 to 2026. It noted that during this period, at least 20 S-300 and S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems abandoned two key positions due to a shortage of missiles and demands to strengthen air defense in other regions.
In particular, air defense was weakened in the area of the Sevmash and Zvezdochka shipyards. As Militarny noted, Sevmash is the only shipyard in Russia that builds nuclear submarines, while the neighboring Zvezdochka shipyard specializes in their repair and modernization.
For many decades, the 1528th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment of the Leningrad Military District was responsible for protecting these facilities. But now the situation has changed—recent satellite data indicates the dismantling of defensive positions on Yagry Island and Mironova Gora. Yagry Island reportedly housed two S-300 launcher batteries. The site now appears empty. Specifically, the radars used for target illumination and missile guidance, as well as ammunition storage containers, have disappeared.
A similar situation is observed at Myronova Gora, located 12 km from the shipyard. As recently as 2024, eight S-300 launchers and target illumination radars were stationed there, but these completely disappeared from imagery from 2025–2026.
The portal noted that another reason for the air defense system's demise at these positions could be the fact that soldiers from this regiment were killed during the war against Ukraine. Specifically, the S-400 battalion commander, Lieutenant Colonel Vladimir Spiridonov from Severodvinsk, was killed in occupied Crimea in April 2024.
"Severodvinsk is located 1,500 km from the Ukrainian border, making it vulnerable to possible attacks," the portal concluded.
The Russian air defense situation is characterized by a severe shortage of key systems and localized gaps in defense. Due to Ukrainian strikes, the enemy is experiencing a shortage of long-range systems, and to cover its own rear facilities, the Russians are forced to redeploy frontline air defense systems directly from the front to the Moscow area. Russia built the city of Severodvinsk to outlast the apocalypse.
It sits up on the White Sea, roughly 1,500 kilometers from the nearest Ukrainian-held ground, wrapped in cold water and empty tundra and a Cold War air-defense network built to guard the single most valuable industrial site in the Russian military. The shipyards there build Russia’s nuclear submarines. There is exactly one place on Earth that does that job for Moscow, and this is it. The shipyards are still standing but much of the air defense that was supposed to protect them is not. It’s essentially unguarded. And here’s the funny part: Ukraine has never fired a shot at those shipyards. It may never bother to. It has already forced Russia to weaken their protection anyway, which might be the more impressive achievement.
