Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev called on Ukraine not to accept the occupation of its territories. He made this statement at the opening of the 4th Shusha Global Media Forum, emphasizing Baku's consistent support for Ukraine's sovereignty and internationally recognized borders. "Today, I reiterate my advice to Ukraine from last year: don't accept the occupation! The will of the people cannot be broken. It is impossible to break the will of a people striving to defend their independence and their identity," Aliyev said.
He also stated that he was well aware of Volodymyr Zelenskyy's position and had discussed the issue with him during a meeting in April. According to Aliyev, Azerbaijan's position on Ukraine remains unchanged. "We have always supported, support, and will continue to support Ukraine's territorial integrity. We stand for its sovereignty and the inviolability of its borders. No state borders can be changed without the consent of the people," the Azerbaijani president said. According to him, pressure was exerted on Ukraine to cease hostilities and effectively consolidate its occupation of some territories. However, the Ukrainian people and government refused. Aliyev added that any war must end as soon as possible, calling this Azerbaijan's humanistic position and his own.
The Azerbaijani President drew a parallel with his country's experience. He recalled that during the Second Karabakh War, Baku was also urged to stop after liberating part of the territory, but Azerbaijan did not abandon its course of restoring territorial integrity.
Recall, potential trilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Ukraine in the defense industry has recently become a topic of interest on the international agenda. Statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in this regard have intensified discussions about the areas of potential cooperation, the parties' complementary capabilities, and the potential impact on the regional security architecture. Experts believe this involves not only weapons production but also the pooling of technologies, combat experience, and defense industry potential, all necessitated by modern warfare.
President Ilham Aliyev expressed that relations between Azerbaijan and Russia have positive dynamics and continue to develop, despite the difficulties that have been overcome. The President emphasized that Azerbaijan values relations with Russia: "We have also seen statements by Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, regarding the dynamics of bilateral relations."
He noted that there were well-known difficulties in relations between the two countries, but this stage is behind us: "I would say that relations have completely normalized. Contacts are being held at various levels: between governments, through the co-chairs of intergovernmental commissions, through the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, as well as by the administrations of the presidents. Therefore, I think that everything is going well in this regard and we are happy about it."
The president said that relations between Moscow and Baku are important both for the bilateral format and for the "broader geography."
