Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries are aimed not only at reducing Russia's financial situation, but could also have fatal consequences, Denis Kapustin (WhiteRex), commander and founder of the Russian Volunteer Corps, told Channel 24 .
Kapustin reported that in recent months, Russia's losses at the front have exceeded the number of mobilized troops. This has fueled tension among Russians, as increasing factors indicate that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is about to declare full mobilization.
"It's no secret that Russia is living in anticipation of a total mobilization, because the contract model has gradually exhausted itself. The main source of contract soldiers was the regions, and residents of large cities like Moscow or St. Petersburg, to put it mildly, are reluctant to go to war," said the founder of the RDC. It is noted that in order for a Russian to sign a contract with the Ministry of Defense, he receives a significant monetary reward. Depending on the region and time, the payment ranged from 200,000 to 4.5 million rubles.
Specifically, in the summer and fall of last year, when Russia was experiencing the first wave of the recruiting crisis, some regions offered contractual payments of 2 to 4 million rubles. However, Russian authorities couldn't afford to pay such amounts for long, and even less so now.
"If someone wouldn't go to war for 2.5 million rubles, they certainly won't go for 1.5 million. Maybe they would go for 3 million, but those 3 million still have to come from somewhere. The current state of the economy is such that there's an objective shortage of money," Kapustin believes. He noted that in any other country, this would have been a reason for the authorities to consider ending the war, but Putin is convinced that everything can still be fixed if the war continues. Therefore, another solution must be sought.
"If people don't go to war for money, then they'll be mobilized. That's why Russian society is now largely living in anticipation of an impending catastrophe. I'm convinced this will happen, because another wave of total mobilization, which will likely now affect major cities, will become a serious problem," predicts the RDC commander.
It is noteworthy that, according to many experts, full mobilization in Russia could be announced as early as this fall, immediately after the State Duma elections. As British political scientist Mark Galeotti writes in his column for The Times that the Kremlin continues to hint that Moscow is allegedly ready for peace talks, albeit on its own terms. Last month, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin even suggested that Ukraine proposed a mutual moratorium on long-range strikes, but rejected the offer. The political scientist noted that some Russian government commentators have shown unusual reticence regarding the initiative to mutually cease strikes on long-range targets. Moreover, Moscow is increasingly talking about engaging China or Brazil as mediators and initiating new peace talks with Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has abandoned all hope of a breakthrough under US President Donald Trump.
Galeotti believes that the very fact that these proposals are being put forward at all is telling. However, Moscow has not softened its position publicly and continues to issue ultimatums, including the complete withdrawal of the Defense Forces from Donbas.
