Over the past two weeks, Ukraine has carried out a series of drone strikes against targets deep within Russian territory, primarily in and around Moscow . According to The Atlantic , this focus on targets in the Moscow region demonstrates that Ukraine is now attempting to exert political and economic pressure on Putin's regime and cripple his military machine by depriving it of funds, supplies, and soldiers.

"The recent attacks on the space communications center in Dubna and a major Moscow oil refinery are typical of Ukraine's strategy to create unbearable conditions for the Russian dictator," the publication writes.

In particular, the attack on the Moscow Oil Refinery on June 18 operated on several levels to "disgrace and undermine Putin's position." First, the attack, almost certainly deliberate, caused a massive fire, producing a thick column of black smoke visible throughout Moscow. The purpose was clear: to show Muscovites that Ukraine could strike even the most important economic targets, and that the days of pretending the war was far removed from their comfortable lives were over.

The attacks on Moscow oil refineries also point to another of Ukraine's goals: cutting off Putin's access to the funds he needs to continue the war. To finance its military, Russia depends almost entirely on the sale of oil and other petroleum products to the rest of the world.

At the same time, Ukraine's strikes on oil refineries have left Putin with a dilemma, the publication writes: "The gasoline shortage is clearly causing public discontent. But if Russia restricts exports to preserve domestic oil reserves, it will also reduce the amount of money it can invest in the war. Less money flowing into the state coffers also means fewer benefits for the people of Moscow, whose consent Putin desperately needs."

Two strikes on the Central Control Center in Dubna also clearly show the goals of the Ukrainian military.

"The Ukrainians are saying, 'Even your most important facilities deep inside Russia are not safe. Your poor performance on the ground will only worsen,'" the publication writes.

The recent attacks will likely not force Russia out of the war quickly, but they have dispelled Russians' belief that Putin is capable of defending Moscow, the Russian economy, and the Russian military. Following the largest drone attack on Moscow since the start of the full-scale war, anti-war sentiment in Russia's regions has sharply increased . The number of posts criticizing the war increased by 235% in a week. Russians are also searching en masse online for information on when the war with Ukraine will end .

According to Yandex's Wordstat service, from June 22 to 28, users made over 137,000 search queries on the topic "when will Russia end the war against Ukraine." This is the highest number since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022.
