Following the failure of the Russian offensive on Kyiv, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov ordered his units to leave Ukraine. However, he faced severe pressure from the leadership of the Russian National Guard and the Ministry of Defense. This is stated in a new investigation by the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta. Europe.
According to journalists, even before the full-scale invasion began, Chechen units were aware of the impending operation and were counting on a quick capture of Kyiv. The plan called for the capture of Gostomel Airport, after which Rosgvardia forces were to enter the Ukrainian capital and take control of administrative buildings. However, the operation failed. The Ukrainian Armed Forces thwarted the Russian forces' plans, and Chechen National Guard columns came under fire on the approaches to Gostomel. According to sources, panic broke out among the "Kadyrovites." Some commanders later accused each other of fleeing the battlefield. Following these events, Chechen units received new orders to be deployed to storm Mariupol. According to the investigation, this very moment sparked a serious conflict between Kadyrov and the leadership of the Russian security forces. A high-ranking source close to the Chechen leader told reporters that Kadyrov's aide, Daniil Martynov, was shocked by the new order. According to him, Martynov called the deployment of ordinary Rosgvardia officers against Ukrainian defenders "complete horror." After this, according to the source, Kadyrov ordered the immediate return of all his units to Chechnya. But soon after, the head of the Russian National Guard, Viktor Zolotov, called him and demanded that the columns be turned back, threatening to accuse the Chechen commanders of desertion. According to Novaya Gazeta. Europe, the conversation ended with an extremely harsh reaction from the Chechen leader. The source claims that Kadyrov told the head of the Russian National Guard: "It's not Zolotov or Shoigu who gives orders to the Chechens, but Kadyrov. And Zolotov and Shoigu are going to...!" Despite the conflict, Chechen units ultimately continued to participate in the war. After the "Kadyrovites" fled from Kyiv, social media accounts belonging to Kadyrov and his associates began regularly featuring reports of Chechen fighters' supposedly successful participation in battles, along with posts about new units ready to deploy to Ukraine. During this period, the "Kadyrovites" commanders who had fled home were banned from appearing in public. Some, according to sources, were even placed in a secret prison run by the Chechen Special Rapid Response Unit for conflicts, breaches of discipline, and excessive talkativeness. The authors of the article pay special attention to a video recording published on March 13, 2022, in which Kadyrov allegedly held a meeting just seven kilometers from Kyiv. According to the investigation, this footage was staged and took place not in Ukraine, but in the basement of a Chechen special forces unit. The video was intended to create the impression that the Chechen leader was personally present near the Ukrainian capital, despite the failure of his initial offensive plan.
