Ukraine has developed a missile that is launched from a balloon at the edge of the stratosphere and is capable of penetrating Russian electronic warfare systems. The American publication Defense News wrote about this.

According to the publication, this is one of the latest weapons Ukraine is using as part of its campaign of medium-range strikes against Russian territory. Its goal is to force the Kremlin to withdraw its troops and return to the negotiating table.

Launched from a balloon, the DART rocket descends from an altitude of approximately 7-11 miles (11-18 km) and travels under satellite guidance until it reaches an altitude of approximately 4 miles (6.5 km). At this point, the navigation system shuts off, and the solid-fuel motor propels the rocket onto its intended trajectory, according to developers from the Ukrainian company Center for Innovation Technologies.

Once the navigation system is turned off, Russian electronic warfare systems can no longer knock the missile off course.

The company developed the DART for launch from a balloon, rather than from an aircraft or ground-based launcher. The developers envision it as a low-cost, stealthy, and electronic warfare-resistant launch vehicle designed to deliver guided weapons deep into Russian territory.

According to the publication Militarnye, the missile's warhead, weighing approximately 13 kg, disperses graphite wires designed to short-circuit Russian power grids. However, the system has not yet undergone Ukrainian military certification.

"Balloons are actively used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, primarily as support platforms and means for carrying out medium- and long-range strikes," retired Colonel Viktor Kevlyuk, who served in the Ukrainian Armed Forces for 35 years and now works at the Kyiv-based Center for Defense Strategies, told Euromaidan Press last month.

"They are inexpensive, undetectable by radar, and can remain in the air for a long time while carrying a payload," Kevlyuk noted.

According to him, Ukraine has already launched more than 1,000 such balloons towards Russia.

Kyiv is now using these balloons to launch guided missiles. Riding with the prevailing westerly winds, they penetrate deep into Russian territory and can even reach Moscow. During a strike last September, Russian air defenses detected them at an altitude of approximately 6 miles or 9.7 km.

Balloons can drift downwind for more than a hundred miles before dropping something, and then handing off to a drone or rocket that will fly hundreds more miles.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have already used military balloons, most often for observation or as decoys.

These cheap, wind-drift balloons prompt Russian air defenses to launch S-300 and S-400 interceptor missiles, which cost millions of dollars. Each balloon costs around $200. In September, during a combined nighttime strike, Ukraine launched several balloons over Moscow and Tatarstan. Analysts believe this strategy was intended to confuse Russian air defenses.

The other side of the story became known in May, when a video surfaced online showing an American attack drone crashing from a Ukrainian balloon over the front line. The video, distributed by Ukrainian military channels, became the first public evidence of Kyiv using balloons in conjunction with precision-guided munitions.
