College Football Playoff Rankings Face a Chaotic Week

We get our very first college football playoff show tonight,
which is just laughable, Craig,
on so many different levels that anything is,
if anything, that they actually tell us
tonight as far as the top 12 teams
who might very well be in the running to make the playoffs
this year.
And I want everyone to keep in mind
when they watch that show tonight that just imagine
24 teams now.
Being in contention for a playoff
when you see how ridiculous it is going to be here
tonight, because you're going to have your top 12
and you're going to have those first
four out, Craig.
So 16 teams, essentially.
And I believe since the start of it now,
we've only ever had three teams that were not in
the initial top 12 in the poll and then made the playoffs.
And those teams, Arizona State did it a couple of years ago
because they ended up upsetting and winning the Big 12.
And then you had a couple last year with James Madison and Tulane,
the other six conferences there.
But if you were part of the Big Four
and you don't show up in the top 12 tonight,
Craig, there's a good chance we won't be seeing you.
At least history tells us we're not seeing you in the playoff at all.
It doesn't happen.
Well, we got a lot of big matchups coming up this week in week 10.
I think that last line is the key.
Everything that you said before that, no offense,
it doesn't matter because this season is on
its head in college football, Joe.
I don't think, I mean, this is the most unpredictable season
in the history of you and I watching
college football.
So whatever happens tonight,
I think it's fun to talk about, but I think it's absolutely
meaningless because on Saturday,
you're going to get Notre Dame playing Miami.
And certainly if Miami beats Notre Dame,
Miami's kind of locked in now to a playoff spot.
If Notre Dame beats Miami,
then Miami probably has to worry about what happens to them
if they lose another game between now and the end of the season.
But that's just the tip of the iceberg here
because LSU plays Georgia on Saturday.
And if LSU loses to Georgia, is it Alabama?
Am I getting that right or wrong here?
Alabama, that's what I meant to say.
So if Alabama plays LSU this week, LSU loses to
Alabama, LSU is out of the college football playoff in all likelihood.
After Saturday, I think we'll get a much
better view of
where we're headed. Now you can throw up that other
graphic with Georgia and Mississippi. My bad
on that. If Mississippi was to
lose to Georgia, Mississippi
in all likelihood will not be in the college football
playoff, but if they should win, then
it puts Georgia on notice because that would give
Georgia their second loss of the season. So,
Joe, in the end,
Confusing or not for me, for everyone out there,
it should be just as confusing because
whatever happens tonight is sort of meaningless.
The one team that I think that has made
the biggest strides in college football this season
That is positioning themselves,
I don't know how you feel about this, Joe, but they're
positioning themselves to be maybe a top five team.
I don't know that they're deserving of it,
but the way that it's trending is, Joe, UCLA
at this point cannot be discounted.
We haven't probably talked about them all season long,
but here they are, and of course
they're going to play USC.
And that could be a game that puts UCLA in the top three,
Joe, at the end of the season.
This is the kind of crazy year that we just couldn't have expected.
And then what happens next year, as you mentioned,
with the 24 teams that get into the college football playoff,
let's be honest, the show is meaningless next year, this time.
I'm fine with the college football playoff,
but if any show that tells us anything in November,
who's the 25th and 26th team that's out,
I don't think anybody's going to care next year.
But next week, we'll have a much better idea
as to who's out and who is in after this week.
