Why We Should Go to the Moon Again | 5-Minute Videos

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong, followed by Buzz Aldrin, stepped out of a delicate, ungainly spacecraft named Eagle and onto the Moon. The landing of Apollo 11 was one of the greatest moments in American history, one of the greatest moments in world history. Over the next three years, we took five more trips back to the Moon. Apollo 17 spent nine times longer on the lunar surface than Apollo 11. And then we stopped. Colt, what happened? Why did we spend all that money, expend all that effort, risk all those lives to get there, when we had so many problems down here? Well, because Americans are a nation of explorers, that's why. It's in our blood. And here's the pattern. Almost every time we've crossed the edge of the map, over an ocean, across a continent, up into the sky, we've come home with more than we left with. New knowledge, new tools, whole industries that no one saw coming. But for America, it's more than that. For America, exploration is a spiritual necessity. The Apollo program is an American story. America was built by people who chose the hard way over the easy way. Settlers who crossed an ocean towards a shore they'd never seen. Pioneers who pointed their wagons west into territory that wasn't even on a map. A country founded on the idea that the frontier isn't a wall, it's an invitation. So, the reason we stopped going to the moon is actually pretty simple. After six missions, the lunar frontier was no longer unconquered. The invitation had been withdrawn. Now think about that for a moment. America is such an exceptional country that we not only went to the moon, America is so exceptional that we got bored going to the moon. Now, of course, you cannot separate the moon landing from its historical context. In October 1957, a beeping metal ball sailed over the American sky. It was a satellite named Sputnik, launched by the communist Soviet Union, America's adversary in the long standoff known as the Cold War. In April 1961, the Soviets put the first human being into orbit. The communists, not the free world, it seemed, owned the future. To the nation's young president, John F. Kennedy, that was unacceptable. In a speech before Congress in May of 1961, he committed the U.S. to landing a man on the moon and bringing him home safely before the decade was out. Later, in a speech at Rice University, Kennedy declared, We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things not because they are easy, but because they are hard. Hard? Nobody actually knew how to do what the president had just promised. So an entire nation went to work on Project Apollo. Around 400,000 people—engineers, mathematicians, machinists, seamstresses sewing spacesuits by hand— built the impossible piece by piece. And it cost lives. Three astronauts died in a launch pad fire in the Apollo 1 capsule in 1967. America grieved, fixed what was wrong, and kept going. Then finally, on July 20, 1969, beating Kennedy's deadline by five months and eleven days, Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong climbed down a ladder and set his boot on another world. That's one small step for man, he said, one giant leap for mankind. And then, just a few years later, it was all over. Somewhere in the past half century, a country that had walked on the moon Started to wonder whether it could still do big things at all. We lost what it meant to be American. But the moon is still there, waiting for us to go back. Is the spirit of exploration still there? Enter Project Artemis, fittingly named for the twin sister of Apollo in Greek mythology. Artemis is not a rerun of the Apollo program of the 1960s. This time, the goal isn't to plant a flag, grab some rocks, and leave. This time, we mean to go back and stay. To build a lasting human presence and to use the moon as a stepping stone to Mars and then on to the rest of the solar system. Which brings up the question we began with, why go to the moon at all? Well, this time it's not for the prestige, we took that trophy home when today's grandparents were children. It's not even for the science and the spin-off technologies, valuable as they are. We choose to go because of who we become when we go. We choose to go to the moon, not because it is easy, but because it is hard. Apollo didn't just win a race against the Soviets. It convinced America that nothing was beyond its grasp. That's what Artemis can do. Not just return us to the moon, return us to ourselves. Remind us that we can still lead, still build, still dream, and dream big. The frontier never closed. We just stopped looking up. Time to look up again.
