Kingston residents are angry tonight
because plans for a massive data center are moving
forward. Tonight, city leaders approved a special use permit
for 560 acres of land in which the data
center would be located.
Fox 5's Denise Dillon tells us city leaders say this is a win for the
community. The mayor calls it a blessing,
but many residents have major concerns
and fear it will destroy the small city they call home.
Residents are furious after Kingston City leaders approved
a special use permit for
560 acres of land on State Road 293 near Law Road
that paves the way for a 350,000 square
foot data center.
I'm just very disappointed and very heartbroken.
Very disappointed and very heartbroken.
Their concerns include surging water and power demands,
pollution, noise, and the impact on wildlife.
Most people don't realize or recognize
or even want to pay attention to all the species that we're losing.
I've lived here for 25 years. I love this town.
When they leave, it's a lasting footprint that we'll have to deal with.
Thor Equities, a New York City-based developer,
says it will provide 50 or more high-paying jobs
and be a financial benefit for the city.
We expect this project would provide at least $2 million
a year just to the city of Kingston.
We've been in dire straits as far as financial...
You know, this is kind of a little blessing for us to help us get
this city turned around and try to stand on our own.
Mary Ann Townsend worries Kingston will never be the same.
Our grandchildren, as we are, are going to be looking
at this thing every time we come out of our yards.
The folks that live around there in that area that have lived there
for, oh gosh, 50 years or longer have been done an injustice.
I talked to a couple of residents who say this isn't over yet.
They say they've already talked to a lawyer
and plan to file a lawsuit hoping to stop the data center.
In Kingston, Denise Dillon, Fox 5 News.
