With stories that matter to you, this is Fox 6 News at 9.
We'll be right back.
Now at 9, the time to sway voters is over.
When we wake up, it will be election day.
But we're not anticipating an early night.
We may not win every bid, and we understand that,
but at least we want to make sure that the process is followed.
And this contractor raising questions after someone else won
a bid to tear down the Lincoln Avenue School.
The new accusations after MPS decided
to spend millions more to go with someone else.
We're following some breaking news here at nine.
We'll get to election coverage in just a moment
here. But the 175 shutdown right now that's just north
of the Ampham Field, there's some sort of
police incident out there on the roads.
Christina Van Zelst is on the way. So when she gets to the
scene, we'll bring you the latest. This is 175.
This is near Valit. And this is State Highway
175 in the Washington Park area.
So as we get more, we'll bring it to you.
Let's talk about the Tuesday turnout.
In just hours, polls in Wisconsin will open, and you will decide.
At stake, control of the governor's mansion,
the state legislature, and Washington.
And once again, how quickly winners are announced will likely depend
on what happens inside Milwaukee's central count.
Christina Van Zels filed this report earlier, looking at the process.
10 pods, 10 machines, and 130 workers.
This is a look at Milwaukee's central count.
These are pods. All of the tabulating machines
are aligned here in the middle. You've got pods
one through five on one end and then six through ten on the other.
The red carts are the carts
that actually have the uncounted ballots.
They are secured under padlock. Milwaukee
Police Department will be here for 24 hours straight until we arrive.
And then we will confirm the seals
that are on the locks to ensure that they haven't
Been tampered with Milwaukee
Election Commission executive
director Paulina Gutierrez says
counting can take more than 15 hours.
I don't think that what's
going to be a super late night.
You know, I hope I hope before 1AM.
But you know, of course we count,
but then we still have an hour or two
of the download process plus the
transition transportation of those
results and then the results have
to be uploaded during the primary.
There was nearly a two hour delay.
Central count workers accidentally
downloaded tabulator audit logs
We have visual images available. We'll do the point and call.
We'll actually offer the public.
We have some laminated copies so people can follow through the process.
And I don't anticipate any issues with that.
And that was Christina Van Zeltz reporting.
Tomorrow, Wisconsin will decide if David Crowley
or Tom Tiffany will be our next governor.
Both candidates, they crisscrossed the state
to make their final push to voters.
Tonight, both sides brought in reinforcements.
Scott Walker campaigned for Congressman Tom Tiffany.
Walker's the last Republican to serve as Wisconsin governor,
who lost to Tony Evers in 2018.
Evers is not seeking re-election, so this is an open race,
and the polls have shown it is a very close race.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley,
he got backup from National Democrats.
Today, former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg
joined Crowley for the final countdown to Election Day.
We finished nine days out on the road and 55 stops
and covering Wisconsin once again today
and just a great turnout throughout the past 10 days.
We're really excited for tomorrow. I feel good. Don't get me wrong.
That doesn't take away the stress of Election Day being tomorrow,
but I feel really good. We've seen a lot of excitement.
Voters say their top issue is the cost of living
and both candidates have hammered that point
and shared their plans.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission reports about 3.6 million registered
voters. That number can change as you can register
at your polling place tomorrow if you have not
done so yet. The last two governor's races
saw about 2.6 million voters cast ballots.
And in dozens of communities,
voters will also be asked to approve raising property taxes.
More than 70 school districts throughout
the state have referendums on the ballots.
In the Elmbrook district, you'll decide on a $100 million proposal.
The proposal will fund renovations
at four buildings built between 1958 and 1969.
These include Pilgrim Park Middle,
Wisconsin Hills Middle, Swanson Elementary.
In Tonawanda Elementary,
the district tells us these projects will modernize classrooms,
expand undersized classrooms and gym space,
implement some new safety, standard safety
features, and improve building-wide accessibility.
Now, if approved, there would be a net tax
increase of about $55
a year for a $500,000 home.
And over in Whitefish Bay,
voters will have to answer a $90 million question.
This is essentially a smaller version
of the $135 million referendum that failed in April.
The district is looking to rebuild
and remodel the middle school on its current site.
Updates at the high school include HVAC,
fire, sprinkler alarm systems, all that.
Fire and alarm systems at Cumberland
and Richards Elementary Schools would also be installed.
If approved, homeowners could see an increase of about $71 per month.
Or $857 per year on a home worth $685,000,
give or take $800.
Polls open at 7 in the morning.
They close at 8 tomorrow night.
Now, if you're still in line at 8,
remember this, you can still cast your ballot.
You just got to make sure you're in line by 8.
Make sure you have a photo ID.
And if you haven't registered yet, again,
you can still do that at your polling place.
Just bring a proof of residence, something like a utility bill.
Fox 6 has you covered for Election Day.
Our voter guide is loaded with what you need
to know from finding your polling place
to seeing what's on your ballot
and how to watch the live results and analysis once polls close.
Just head to fox6now.com or the Fox local app.
And Election Day is bringing some changes to your primetime lineup.
Tomorrow's episodes of Best Medicine and Doc will now air Wednesday.
You can watch it right after
our special election coverage right here on Fox 6 News.
All right let's turn to the weather now. Kim pointed this out.
It's foggy out there. Really foggy.
I think that's American Family Field.
Thank goodness for those letters that are lit up.
Let's go to Tom Walks.
And we had some rain around 6 o'clock this evening,
and now it's turned into fog.
Yeah, fog and drizzle, guys.
And that's really going to be the theme
into the morning hours tomorrow,
as well as we start out Election Day.
Let's take a look, show you the radar tonight.
As, again, we had some light rain earlier.
We're seeing some more sort of developing on and off here tonight,
especially in our western counties.
But everyone's in on that fog and drizzle here,
and that's going to continue.
Steadier showers near Monroe and Madison and points to the west.
Let me broaden the view out for you here a little bit.
There is a decent push of rain
and even thunderstorms heading through Cedar Rapids, Iowa tonight.
But that is on a trek to the northeast.
So the bulk of this rain
that you're seeing develop will move off to our west overnight.
Yes, we're going to see some light rain pushing on through.
But I think the bulk of the heavy rain out
of this entire system will stay just off to our west.
Talk about fog.
This is a live look from our Estabrook
Park Tower camera about 1,000 feet up,
and we're stuck in a stratus cloud tonight.
Fifty nine degrees, two point fifty eight.
That's why we have the fog.
Wind is out of the south.
Just goes to show, though, how saturated the air is,
because even with a south wind at
a decent rate, we are still seeing that fog around.
So temperatures will go up a degree or two overnight.
Drizzling fog in the morning,
67 tomorrow afternoon with some steadier showers coming
in.
More on your Election Day forecast in a few minutes.
Back over to you.
Tom, thanks. A Milwaukee contractor says MPS is not being transparent
about the bidding process for the demolition of one of its schools.
Fire destroyed the Lincoln Avenue school in June.
Fox 6's Ashley Sears here in studio.
And Ash, one contractor is appealing after
learning another company bidding nearly four...
A million dollars more could actually win the contract.
Yeah, the MRD group says they know they can't win every contract,
but say this process hasn't been straightforward.
They have concerns with how things have been handled
and what this means for the project.
We're very frustrated with the whole process.
We want some transparency.
For decades, the MRD group has been working in demolition
and says it's never dealt with anything like this.
We may not win every bid, and we understand that,
but at least we want to make sure that the process is followed.
In June, fire destroyed the Lincoln Avenue school.
MPS announced it would be demolished.
The MRD group put in a bid for $928,000.
Includes asbestos workers, supervision of the site,
make sure that it's all documented correctly.
They knew other companies were vying for the same contract,
but didn't think they would lose out to one,
bidding nearly $4 million more.
We don't understand the big gap between our number.
And how the school district is going
to pay someone $4.8 million to do that work.
Monday, the Milwaukee Public School Board considered moving forward
with that $4.8 million contract with TW Chicago out of Illinois,
holding a virtual meeting, but ultimately...
did not make a decision.
The recommendation is that the board consider this item
in closed session.
The MRD group has hired an attorney
and is now appealing.
Nobody has been able to see what the bids were
or what the scores were as promised.
They want more clarity on the process
for everyone involved.
It was just so cloaked in secrecy
that none of these contractors can figure out
what's going on.
I asked MPS about the higher bid being considered for the contract
and the appeal being made by the MRD group.
A spokesperson for the district only answering
that MPS received MRD group's appeal
and is reviewing it through
the district's established procurement appeal process.
Bethany Kim.
All right, more to come, but that school is definitely coming down.
Thanks, Ashley.
All right, we're still following that breaking
news we told you about at the top of the show.
This is the latest from MPD.
The Milwaukee Police Department says they've shut down part of 175
due to an incident that MPD
is asking people to now avoid the area.
So this would just be north
of American Family Field where 175 juts off north.
Towards Washington Park, you know,
Blue Mound Road is at the top of where the interstate ends there.
And so they've got that shut down
with a large law enforcement presence there.
Christina Van Zelst is on the way.
She's just arriving at the scene now.
So as soon as we get her shot up,
we'll bring you the very latest there.
Well, after college kids were found shirtless,
covered in condiments in Madison, two students were arrested.
Today, they caught a break.
The DA has decided there will be no criminal charges in the case.
Changes that Brad is still promising.
And control of the state Senate could be decided by a single race.
We're going to show you the district where
millions has already been spent by both sides.
You're watching Fox 6 News
with Ben Handelman and Kim Murphy.
And right now, we're following breaking
news from Milwaukee's West Side.
Yeah, there has been a large police presence out there.
We'll
175 and Vliet, this would be north of American Family Field.
Christina VanZel just got to the scene.
What do you see out there, Christina?
be
Yeah, Ben and Kim, we just got into our newsroom that we know
the medical examiner has been called to this scene.
right
We also know that the Milwaukee Police Department
is asking folks to stay away from this area.
The entire interstate, 175, it is currently shut down.
back.
When we pulled up, this is what we can see from our vantage point.
Again, we are standing on Vliet over 175,
both directions of the freeway, shut down at this hour.
Again, we know that Milwaukee police asked people to avoid this area,
and they are the ones with the lights on that you can see there.
But at this hour, that's all the information that we have.
We did learn that the medical examiner has been called.
So as we learn to get more information, we will keep you updated.
But this is what we can see from our vantage point,
again, on Vliet Street overlooking 175.
175, so
Not a lot of information at this moment
as investigators are still working this scene.
But if you're in this area, the entire interstate, it is shut down.
So you want to take another route.
Want to see what this vehicle is that's coming here, actually.
This one car, it looks like a motorcycle.
Looks like law enforcement there.
So probably helping with the...
We will keep you updated,
but for now, we will send it
back to you in the studio.
Christina, I have to ask, I know that you can't see a lot
from where you are, but are there vehicles involved,
or are you just seeing police vehicles?
So from this vantage point,
it appears to be just police vehicles, but again, we are
pushed pretty far back because
when we pulled up the entire area of Washington Park, which
is to the right of your screen,
that was all blocked off because that goes to that over
that bridge that you're looking at there.
So they have a very wide area blocked off
for this investigation, but at this time,
all I can see are police.
Law enforcement vehicles and Milwaukee police.
You know what's interesting about this scene?
And Christina, we actually might have a better view than you
because Isaiah's got that beautiful lens on his camera.
There's police tape, it looks like, that's going over the road.
I'm not sure if you can see that from your vantage point
as our shot's freezing a little bit here.
There we go.
That's a really unique scene
because we don't see that for a car crash or something like that.
To me, that looks like crime scene investigation tape that's out there.
And both north and southbound lanes are closed at this moment.
So we're talking about 94 by Ampham Field.
If you were headed towards Washington Park,
you pass the Humane Society, and then you keep going.
And this is where 175 ends, right there at the library by Lloyd Street.
Christina, can you see the tape? Because I
don't see it on the other side of the road.
I'm just seeing it on the north side here.
Yeah, so as you mentioned that, I did peek over at our camera,
and I can see what you're talking about, and actually,
over at Washington Park, there was also police tape,
so we were not able to enter the street that would take you over this,
the freeway here, so...
As you mentioned, Ben, I mean, yeah,
it does appear that it's crime scene tape,
which you do not often see or really ever see if it's a car accident.
So, again, still waiting to hear
from law enforcement on what they are investigating.
We do have some people that are also standing on this overpass asking,
do you know what happened?
And it doesn't appear like anyone heard anything.
So, again, we will bring you updated as soon as we get it.
We do know that the medical examiner
Has been called.
Yeah.
Christina Van Zels, thank you so much.
And again, this is State Highway 175 near Valit.
We'll check back with you.
Let's go to Tom.
Top of this scene that we have.
We've got some weather out there.
It's foggy out there.
Yeah, it's foggy and it's drizzly, guys,
and that's going to continue all night and all day tomorrow as well.
So it's not going to be a major rain, but it's,
you know, just like now, it's just kind of that cloudy,
drizzly weather, right, that we've got.
So let's take a look at weather.
We'll certainly be getting back
to that breaking news with Christina here as well.
As we take a look at the radar,
what you'll notice is that we have light rain on the radar, kind
of filling back in in our northwestern communities, nothing heavy here.
And I think that that's the big overarching point,
because a lot of times you might look at a weather.
Weather app and it'll just say rain, right?
Well, you need a little more context with weather like this,
with a pattern like we have.
And what I mean by that is it's going to kind of bounce back
and forth like we're doing in Washington and Dodge counties right now,
where you kind of go from just that drizzle and fog,
then it picks up a little bit, then it dies down.
That's what we're going to be seeing
throughout the nighttime hours tonight.
And light is really going to be the key word.
You see rain a little bit steadier down by Monroe.
Then it really starts to pick up towards Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, where they have a few rumbles of thunder tonight.
That is moving to the northeast.
East.
So what you'll notice is most of that heavier batch will stay off
to our west, much like happened this evening where we had some rain
that came through during the evening rush hour.
But out in La Crosse, they had
a steady band of rain for quite some time.
In fact, just west of Madison, three quarters of an inch of rain today.
Well, we have just seen a few hundredths of an inch.
So big difference from east to west today.
This is a big system, though.
And what you'll notice is more rain out in Nebraska
and more storms down across parts of Kansas and Oklahoma.
That I'll talk about in just a moment
But this is what it looks like from our Estabrook Park Tower camera.
I'll
We're peering out of a stratus cloud right now.
talk
And when that stratus cloud hits the ground, well, it becomes fog.
about
59, dew point 58, wind out of the south, air pressure.
It's really come down from when we talked last night.
in just
Now, temperatures are in the 50s across the board.
We are actually going to go up a little bit
a
moment.
in the temperature department by morning into the low 60s.
Here's the scope.
Of this storm system.
And yeah, it's a big one.
I mean, it goes from Canada all the way down to Texas here.
And I want to zoom you into Oklahoma
because this is where we have a line of strong thunderstorms
going from Kansas all the way down to Texas.
And they still have a tornado watch up for this area.
Why am I talking about this?
Well, this segment or this wave in the atmosphere
is going to be heading in our direction for
As the entire area of low pressure spins up.
up our way. So what do I mean by that?
Well, no, we're not going to get severe weather like
they're getting in Oklahoma.
But what you're going to notice is our rain chances pick up a bit
tomorrow afternoon. And it's
because this segment will be spiraling up out ahead of the storm
system. So let's talk about what that means.
Let's take a look at Sky Vision Plus. Talk more
hour by hour for you here. And as we go through the overnight again.
Occasional light rain and then the fog and the drizzle
and the mist continues overnight as well.
For Election Day morning, drizzly.
Blustery with a south wind, low 60s tomorrow morning.
Now, watch what happens by noon.
You see that rain start to pick up and you see rain into the afternoon.
We might even see a rumble or two of thunder in the afternoon
as this wave in the atmosphere lifts into our region.
But again, overall, nothing crazy heavy here.
Same thing into Tuesday night.
Then we go into Wednesday where we
still have rain showers in the morning.
And then we start to dry things out as we go into Wednesday afternoon.
So pretty wild in the rain total department,
much lower amounts east, a little bit higher to the west.
But again, even with all this rain in the forecast,
it's really not going to be that much rain.
So here's your six-day planner as we have temperatures
at 67 tomorrow afternoon, 63 on Wednesday.
Oh, November's back, 50 on Friday, 49 by Sunday.
That's the latest from here.
Back to you in the studio.
All right, Tom, thanks. We continue
to follow breaking news from Milwaukee's west side. This
is the Stadium Interchange, Highway 175,
north and southbound near Valete, where there is a
large police presence.
We see crime scene tape up on the interstate, and I just counted about
a dozen police officers. You see some investigators.
right there. That's the middle of the freeway that they're on.
There are some off to the side
that are kind of on the barriers.
And then Washington Park is right up the hill here.
And Christina Van Zels just reported there
was also appeared to be some crime scene tape
up in the park and on the roads right next to 175,
the stadium interchange there. But you could see
A lot of movement still on this scene,
and MPD has put out word on Twitter, they're asking
everyone, stay away from this scene.
And the medical examiner has been called,
so we know that this is a death investigation
also going on.
All right, stay with us here on Fox 6 News at 9.
Obviously, we've got a lot going on.
We're following this breaking news here in Milwaukee.
Stay with us.
Breaking news, there's a huge presence out
on the stadium interchange right now.
Let's get right back out to Christina Van Zeltz.
We know that this is an active investigation
and also that the medical examiner has been called.
Yeah, Kim, and just into our newsroom,
we know that the medical examiner says they were called for one person.
They haven't said what they're investigating here, but at this time,
we know the medical examiner says one person died in this scene.
So we're standing on Bleat Street,
and this is what the interstate looks like at 175.
The entire interstate is shut down in both north and southbound lanes.
And want to zoom in as far as we can from this vantage point
to show you the police tape and the cones.
That appears to be the center of this investigation.
We have another camera that's set up
at Washington as well, so we have
two vantage points of this scene.
and it's not often if this is an accident that you would see
crime scene tape put up like
that with orange cones marking some evidence
so as we zoom in there also want to take you to some
DOT video that we have that shows when law enforcement
came to the scene and arrived if you're in this area we know from
From the closures that Wisconsin 175 North is closed from State
and Vleet to Lloyd Street
and then southbound Wisconsin 175
also closed from 47th Street to West Lisbon to State Street
because of an incident.
No law enforcement has told us what this incident is and what they are
investigating. We just know
that the medical examiner says one person died. Milwaukee police
Police asking people to stay away from this area,
so again, what you're looking at is
It is 175 where police are still out
of their vehicles investigating this scene.
We've seen a couple orange cones, but we are pretty far back.
So this is about as far in that we can zoom.
I know we have another vantage point looking
at a different angle of the screen over on Washington.
But Ben and Kim, Milwaukee Police,
they have a very wide area blocked off.
Arriving to the scene at Washington Park which was about half a mile
away from here and they have that blocked off with crime scene tape
not allowing vehicles to get on that ramp there that you see.
So when we get more information on what this investigation
is and what led up to this presence here we will
of course keep you updated but for now we'll send it back to you.
Christina, that DOT video of officers arriving really shows a lot.
I counted at least seven squads racing towards
that area north of the stadium there.
So watching that again,
you see first one squad responding and then quickly in succession,
you see one after another, after another, at least eight cars.
Yeah, and it's hard to tell.
If they're chasing something
or they're responding to something in this video, right?
If something has already happened
and they're racing up to the street to get to that scene.
I thought it was interesting, too, Christina,
I can see the command post right there on the stadium interchange.
That's the vehicle that says MPD across the top.
We often see that at quote-unquote critical incidents where they can
do investigative work right from that vehicle right there.
It's just interesting to see it parked.
Right there on the interstate.
Right.
And I don't know if you can see from your screens there,
Ben and Kim, but also the officers
and law enforcement surrounding that truck,
they don't appear to have a lot of urgency.
They're kind of sitting down and talking in a group.
It's not clear. It doesn't appear that there's
a lot of urgency left at this scene.
At this point, they've got the cones up, the evidence markers,
and just kind of investigating what this is and what led up to this.
So it does not appear that there is a lot of...
Chaos, if you will, again, you mentioned that command post
is what you're looking at with the big MPD letters on it,
but still both north and southbound of 175,
they are completely shut down at this hour. So if you're traveling,
the Milwaukee Police Department is asking you to avoid this area.
Christina, you said that people,
this is starting to draw attention from folks
who may be passing in the area trying to figure out what's going on.
Have people stopped in their vehicles or are they actually getting out
of their cars to check out what's going on?
So far we've just seen about three people
who are walking on this ramp that we're positioned on
asking if we know anything.
So it doesn't appear that folks who are in the area know what led up
to this either. So not a lot of people in their vehicles stopping.
There's not a lot of traffic
on Vliet right now,
but we've had just a few people ask what happened. Of course,
when you see the entire interstate shut down like
this with all of the police presence,
You're going to want to know, am I safe and what should I do?
Milwaukee police are asking folks to avoid this area,
but we don't know what led up to the law enforcement presence here
and what happened.
You know what I think is interesting?
Can we play that DOT camera one more time,
that video that we just got in?
Because what I know is,
look at all the cars that are on 175 as these police squads go by.
Okay, here's the first one that we see,
and then you're just going to see a flurry of officers.
But look at all of the cars that are out there, okay?
Now let's go live to Christina Van Zelt's shot.
Because it's interesting,
I don't see any of those cars out on the interstate.
All I'm seeing is police vehicles.
So it looks like whoever was,
you didn't get caught up in it, is one of my takeaways here.
It seems like everyone who was in the vicinity seemed to keep moving.
Keep passing.
And this seems to be that this was a response.
So as we get more information, we'll definitely check back with you.
But breaking news from Milwaukee's west side,
this is the Stadium Interchange 175,
both north and south, closed at this hour.
And for the next two hours,
that is the notification, but it could be longer.
And right now, we are posted up on Vleet.
And as we get more information,
we'll bring it to you right here on Fox 6 News at 9.
Back in a moment.
If you're just joining us right now,
a large police presence happening right now on Milwaukee's west side,
just north of the AmFam Field, the stadium interchange.
Yeah, this is State Highway 175, Christina Van Zoust, high above.
Christina, it was interesting, you were talking about
the demeanor of all the officers down there, and there are a lot
of police officers on the stadium interchange right now.
I counted a dozen or so. I'm
not sure what you can see from your vantage point.
So I apologize for looking at my phone,
but we just got news in that we can report here.
We know from the Milwaukee Police Department
that this is an officer-involved incident
and that further updates will be provided
as soon as they are available.
So now we know that this does involve an officer.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office
also put on their Facebook page about this full freeway closure.
And so it appears the Sheriff's Office is also,
of course, when you're dealing with the interstate
State and the highway involved
in this investigation, but wanted to bring you
Again, we just heard from the Milwaukee Police Department confirming
this is an officer-involved
incident.
So, we'll take you back.
We are currently on Vleet Street
and we are standing over Wisconsin 175.
This is the scene now.
Multiple police officers are here.
We know the command post is also here as well.
And both sides of 175,
they are currently shut down during this investigation.
Now when we zoom in all the way,
you can see some of the crime scene tape and also the
The evidence markers, those orange cones,
as they are investigating, again, this officer-involved incident.
We do know from the Milwaukee Medical Examiner, the Milwaukee
County Medical Examiner, they were called here for one person.
So this is new to our newsroom. This is involving an officer.
And again, this is looking over 175.
So I want to show you some video that the DOT caught.
It appears to be law enforcement responding to this incident.
And there are obviously closures,
as you can see from your screen.
We know Wisconsin 175 North is closed from State to Lloyd
Street and southbound.
It's also closed from 47th to West Lisbon to State
because of this incident.
We have another photojournalist
who is on Washington Street who has another vantage
point of this investigation,
but we now know that this is involving an officer, which Ben
and Kim, we were talking about
when it is a critical incident, there is usually that
command post, which we do see here on the freeway.
And Christina, that video, you know, again, that is supports
what you have just reported that this is a critical incident.
And we saw those officers, those squads, it seemed to be racing towards
a scene rather than involved in any kind of pursuit because we didn't
see another car that seemed to be involved. So we don't know how
What led to this, if this was some kind of a chase or what,
but what we can tell you
is that the medical examiner is on the scene,
so that does indicate that someone has died.
Correct.
Right, and again, we are hearing, still trying to learn what happened,
because as you can see in that video, it doesn't appear like there
was a pursuit, and as we mentioned, the other cars driving
didn't necessarily seem like there was a lot of urgency there.
Wait, guys, look at this shot.
Krista, I'm sorry, we've got this new angle.
Look at that pickup truck.
That does not look like a law enforcement pickup truck.
And look at all the cones.
Those are evidence markers right next to this pickup truck.
And that pickup truck is pointed the wrong way
on the stadium interchange. So that is a terrific view.
And there's another vehicle that we can see.
I'm not sure if that's law enforcement there,
but the flashing lights on that pickup truck.
Are you reading that the same way I am, Kim?
I mean, that that's not pointed the right way. Yeah.
What I also want to point out is that this is in District 3,
not far from the scene.
Like, I would say less than five minutes.
So that would also add to how
so many squads were able to respond so quickly
because this is not very far from District 3,
just a couple blocks away.
Yeah, I'm trying to see.
Yeah, Kim, actually on your point there,
you're talking about, sorry to interrupt,
you're talking about District 3.
We're literally standing catty-corner
to the Milwaukee Police Department.
Well, okay, look here, and it's hard to tell
if one of these could be a law enforcement,
you know, coming to help with the investigation.
But these two vehicles here from this pickup truck,
and then there's a smaller vehicle right in front of it.
I'm not sure if, you know, that appears to be right there,
the center of this investigation.
That is great work from our photojournalists
to have this angle of the scene,
because I think right there.
In that DOT camera, you really can't
tell where the incident's taking place.
You can't. And this is, again, the freeway,
and this is a large area that they have blocked off now.
If you're talking all the way from 94 westbound
to where this spills off into Milwaukee,
this is a large stretch they've got blocked off here.
So, you know, we really can't tell where it started,
what direction, or what happened, but...
We're gathering information as it is coming in,
and so we now can say that this is officer-involved shooting.
Well, it's interesting because they didn't use
the word shooting in their release.
They said an officer-involved incident.
Incident.
Excuse me.
Thank you for that correction.
Officer-involved incident.
Well, Ben and Kim, if I could...
If I could add to that, because we did hear
from multiple witnesses, both where you're
seeing our other photojournalist's camera
and where we're standing, we heard from at
least two people who say
that they did hear multiple gunshots in this area.
So we are hearing that and people are talking about that.
Again, we have not had official confirmation from investigators.
But people have said they've heard four
to five gunshots earlier tonight.
And that's closer to where you're seeing that pickup truck shot.
Yeah, it's interesting with this view, too,
because, OK, so in criminal investigations,
Thank you.
when you're looking at how they piece together the scene,
we see the crime scene tape goes up.
So this is where they think anything inside
is where they think all the evidence may be.
And then, guys, oftentimes we'll see them either put.
Are cones out or are things placards with numbers on it?
But look at all the cones there.
And I'm not for certain here,
but oftentimes if an officer is first on scene
and they're trying to preserve evidence,
each time they put down a cone,
that is a different piece of evidence.
And that appears to be what we're looking at here.
I mean, look, what do we have?
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight cones that I can see
just in this shot here right there on the stadium interchange.
Christina, let me ask.
Are you seeing activity around the command center?
Like, what's the movement?
The shot that we have right now, it seems to be a group of officers.
We don't see a lot of, sometimes in incidents like this,
when it's involving the freeway, you might see officers kind of combing
the freeway, forming a line, looking for evidence. But we don't.
see a lot of that going on.
We see an officer or two, but we see seems more officers that are
are grouped. So are you seeing any kind
of activity out of incident command?
No, we're not. And that's a good point you bring up, Kim.
Usually if there's something that happens
on the freeway, the investigation,
you'll see officers kind of backtracking while the entire
entire freeway is closed. We have not seen that.
We did see one motorcycle unit leave the scene, but
At this point, the focus is where you're looking at,
where that command center is and where our other camera is,
where you see the multiple cones.
We have not seen any canvassing of evidence closer to our direction.
I'm glad you brought that up because we
haven't seen that, at least not yet.
All right, you're watching Breaking News here.
Huge police presence. Milwaukee police say
this is an officer-involved incident. Witnesses
telling Christina Van Zelst they did hear shots fired
and a lot of officers still out on there
on the road. Stay with us. Our breaking
news coverage continues after this.
Let's recap. If you're joining us here on Fox 6 News at 9,
this is the scene of a police
investigation. The medical examiner on the scene.
This is the stadium interchange west of AmFam
Field. We know that one person is dead.
The medical examiner on the scene for that. This
is in District 3. What we can tell you,
Christina VanZelst is on the scene. We saw
a number of squads zooming towards this area.
It is now blocked off for the foreseeable future,
both north and south.
We're going to break and come back right after this.
And checking in on our forecast,
we have got rain moving in from the southwest, but it's light.
It's really just foggy, drizzly.
That's the way it's going to be throughout the night.
But we do have more rain coming in for Election Day,
particularly in the afternoon.
But again, light being the key word.
We have more news for you.
Fox 6 News at 10 starts right now.
