Now to a follow-up to a Fox 5 exclusive.
7,000 Fulton County voters who receive residency
challenges will now be able to vote.
That's according to the American Civil
Liberties Union, which received dozens
of complaints from Fulton County voters
about the challenges.
Fox 5's Angelique Proctor says voters wanted this issue resolved before
election day.
We first told you about two voters
that contacted our newsroom after receiving
residency hearing letters.
Now the ACLU and Fulton County say they all will be able to vote.
It is flagging people's addresses if they live
at an address that Fulton County has on record as
being commercial or non-residential.
A challenge letter like this went out to 7,000 voters in
Fulton County. The letter says voters need to show up
at a hearing on election day to verify where
they live. The American Civil Liberties Union
and other election protection organizations believe
the voters should have never been flagged as challenged.
They know that living at something called
a residential address is not a requirement to vote in Georgia.
You could live in an apartment on top of a store or you could
be an unhoused person who just pitches a tent at that place.
If you're a resident of the county,
you're allowed to vote here legally.
Two voters who live in this new Sandy Springs apartment complex
contacted Fox 5 after they say election officials told them
the address was coming up as a gas station.
Well, it used to be, I live in Sandy Springs,
and as a matter of fact, the location is right
around the corner from my house.
It used to be the big lots and a gas station was right there,
but then it has changed.
In the end of last year, that's when it started being occupied as
apartments. But the ACLU says voters should not be challenged just
because government maps are not updated
Can you understand how this might be intimidating to voters,
particularly in this space and time?
Yes, ma'am. I definitely can.
So that's why we made sure that we posted on our
registration and elections page.
The ACLU believes the issue has been resolved.
We did an open records request
and saw that thousands of voters are in this status for
supposedly living at a non-residential address.
We wrote a letter to the county about it,
I spoke with their attorney and they've assured us that
That this will not prevent anyone from being able to vote.
The ACLU says that should be a regular ballot, not a provisional one.
They say if you have any problems,
call the election hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE.
From downtown, Angelique Proctor, Fox 5 News.
