SWAT surrounds vacant daycare after woman calls 911

Standoff ends with a suspect in custody less than a mile away from Lithonia High School. That suspect now faces a number of charges, including aggravated assault. Fox 5's Hernan Gutierrez is live outside DeKalb County Police Headquarters. And Hernan, you heard from neighbors about what happened. Yeah, neighbors very understandably still shaken up by this entire situation, just playing out just a few doors down from their own homes. Police tell us that they were originally called to the 2000 block of Victoria Place overnight for an assault call. Eventually, a SWAT team was called in to help. That house where that man barricaded himself in left in ruins. But at one point I heard them saying we know you're in the bathroom. Come out into the hallway. Neighbors off of Victoria Place in Lithonia waking up to a SWAT team outside their homes early Monday morning. We just heard a big boom and both of us jumped up out the bed and we came out. The whole block was blocked off. According to DeKalb County police officers originally got called to the neighborhood at 116 in the morning for an assault. Mateo Lloyd says he heard knocking at his door around that time, so I ran out and it was a woman standing at my door and she was saying help help please help me. She's attacking me. Call the police. He would end up calling 911 and help the woman get warm and he was creeping around. I guess the left side of the house towards the backyard. And while he was out of reach, I told her to go hide behind this part of the house. Investigators identified that man as 25 year old Tavian Hartwell, One neighbor captured this video of him being taken into custody after the SWAT team went in. Another says the house where it all played out used to be a daycare, but has been vacant for about a year now. We didn't know what was going on. We just heard all the commotion and we couldn't come out of our house. We had to look through the windows. Both neighbors I spoke with are glad someone was able to step in and get the woman out of harm's way. Looking back on it, I'm just glad I was up. Because yeah, it was one o'clock in the morning and I was about to just finish like my last episode. But yeah, something kept me up. Hartwell is currently being held at the DeKalb County Jail. He faces a number of charges including strangulation, two gun charges and obstruction. Live in DeKalb County, Hernan Gutierrez, Fox 5 News. All right, Hernan, thanks.
