All right. I will see you on the final five at 11:30.
Your news at 11 starts right now.
Right now on Fox 5 News at 11.
Twas the night before midterms.
The incumbents were nestled
all snug in their beds.
All visions of majorities danced in their heads.
The challengers were ready.
Their messages tied with one final pitch before election night.
Fox 5 News at 11 starts right now.
First at 11, in a matter of hours,
polls will open here in the DMV and across the nation for the midterms.
Fox News Virginia Ureta is in Northwest tonight speaking with voters.
Well, all eyes are on Congress as control for the Senate
and U.S. House of Representatives
is up for grabs. Now, across the country,
there are key races in battleground states that could
shake up the balance of power.
Here in D.C., there are critical races at stake.
But this midterm election is really about
the issues that matter most to voters.
The price of rent is just like so high.
Affordable housing is a big one.
The military activating National Guard.
The cost of living, it's compared to when it
was maybe 10 years ago to what it is now.
It's skyrocketing. It's too much.
Tonight, Fox 5 spoke with several D.C. residents about what's driving
their decisions at the ballot box.
Two issues kept coming up,
the economy and the presence of the National Guard.
Others say they're backing Republicans
and want to see the party maintain control of Congress.
And some voters say the race for the next D.C. mayor is also critical,
especially when it comes to how
the district will respond to the Trump administration.
Seems like, um...
Former mayor now, Bowser,
kind of abiding to the rules and the game of Trump,
was really looking for someone
who would stand up to that and really put D.C. voters first.
I don't care if they're red or blue.
I just want them to not be an idiot and not be super rude.
Now, early voting has wrapped up in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
According to the latest data, it shows more people casting
ballots ahead of the election compared to the 2022 midterms.
In Washington, D.C., more than 103,000 early ballots have
been casted or returned.
In Maryland, early voting
and return mail ballots are close to one million.
And in Virginia, the numbers are also up with early voting already
outpacing the 2022 midterm early vote by nearly 29 percent.
Now, the question.
is if that same momentum will carry over on election day.
Polling places will be open starting at 7 a.m. in Maryland and in D.C.,
6 a.m. for Virginia, and of course,
we'll have complete election night coverage
starting at 7 p.m. on Fox Local and Fox 5.
Back to you.
President Trump made his final pitch to voters at the reflecting pool.
The White House tried to point to renovations
in D.C. in an effort to show Trump is able to get the job done.
But tied to those projects were botched work,
setbacks and claims of vandalism.
The president also reflected on Republicans razor thin majority
in Congress and their fight to hold on to it.
We fought for 250 years to make it great.
We're not going to let it be torn down by a bunch
of people that have failed everywhere they've been.
Because the ideologies that you're talking about,
various ideologies, they've always failed every single time.
So we'll defend our country,
our culture and our heritage for generations to come.
Trump made no mention of the tough economy or soaring gas prices,
which hit a national average of $4.17.
Robert White has quit D.C. Council to be eligible
to serve as the district's next delegate.
The now former at-large council member spoke out tonight after he
was forced to step down because of a 1970 law.
It states D.C.'s delegate cannot hold
another paid public office on Election Day.
I want to make sure that there is nothing that stands between
or even appears to stand between this day and the next mission.
This is a time where we can make great progress,
but only if we make a couple sacrifices here and there.
White served on the council for 10 years.
He's predicted to win and take over
for longtime delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton.
The Supreme Court has rejected a last-ditch Trump administration push
to set aside thousands of California mail ballots.
The Justice Department wanted
to separate ballots from about 20,000 voters
it flagged as suspected non-citizens.
The justices declined to intervene,
leaving lower court rulings in place
that warned the move could disenfranchise legal voters
and disrupt the election.
A surprise campaign endorsement in the Michigan Senate race has led
to a fundraising surge for Democratic nominee Abdul Al-Sayed.
His primary opponent, Haley Stevens,
backed Republican Mike Rogers yesterday.
Hours later, Al-Sayed's campaign
revealed it raised another $2.4 million.
Tomorrow, and we won't back down for the next six years
because it is our democracy.
Do you want Democrats to win and control the Senate?
I absolutely do.
I just, I'm just casting my vote this one way.
More than 2.3 million early votes in Michigan.
That's a little more than half of the total number
of voters in the last midterms.
And remember, we will have election coverage
for you all day tomorrow on Fox 5, Fox 5 Plus,
and Fox Local Washington, D.C.
Our special coverage starts at 7 p.m. and goes until 2 a.m.
Let's turn our attention to that weather
and your election day forecast.
No need to bring an umbrella to the polls tomorrow.
What about a jacket?
You know, just Mike Thomas is here with the answer.
Hey, Mike.
Nice to know.
You probably need that little jacket.
It's temperatures likely going to be in the 40s early on.
But it's sunshine.
And how about shorts and T-shirt weather?
Why not?
We've been doing it so much this fall.
And we're going to keep that rolling right
on through at least a portion of your November here.
As we take a live look outside, where after a cloudy day,
skies finally started to clear.
And that clearing is what will help
with temperatures getting cooler overnight.
63, your daytime high, which a rare average day here in Washington.
Of course, haven't had any rain this month,
haven't had any rain today, have not had any
rain in 16 days now in Washington,
your second longest stretch of the year without any rain
heading back.
...to last winter.
Temperature this morning, 47.
We'll probably be right around
that number early tomorrow morning as well.
Temperature, 52 D.C. right now.
Beltsville and Bowie just off to the north there.
They're both sitting at 45.
Fairfax, 49.
Haymarket, 46.
Dale City, 47.
La Plata, Sierra at 49 degrees tonight.
Good evening to Waldorf and Prince Frederick.
Right around 50 degrees in both those locations.
Prince Frederick a little cooler at 49.
London Town, 49.
Montross, you are at 50 tonight.
We look at satellite and radar.
Not much to show you those early.
clouds have faded away.
We do have showers on satellite radar, which we haven't had in a little
bit of time here in Washington,
or at least not close to Washington, but even our regional map
has been dry. But Pittsburgh picked up some rain showers today.
Cleveland may pick up a few,
but you can kind of see the flow of the wind there,
southwest and northeast,
and that's going to carry those showers away from us,
at least for the next few days.
We are keeping our fingers crossed
and hopeful that by the end of this week,
that dry streak will likely come to an end.
We'll talk more about that coming up in just a little bit here.
51 by the 1 o'clock hour.
By the 3 o'clock hour bound to about 49,
we'll hold there for the 5 o'clock hour.
Some early morning clouds possible,
but should get back to sun relatively quickly
by the time we hit the afternoon hours.
73, what a daytime high that is.
Wednesday, even warmer at 76.
That's Thursday when maybe we could finally...
Well, do we need the umbrellas and the light of rain?
What are we talking about?
I'll explain more coming up in just a little bit here.
Kenneth?
All right, Mike, see you in a bit.
The power is back on in Foggy Bottom tonight.
D.C. Fire responded to reports of smoke coming out of several manholes
in the 1800 block of H Street northwest this morning.
Pepco says it had to address power surges and some outages,
but the cause is still under investigation tonight.
In less than an hour, the midnight deadline
to sign up to speak at public hearings on
Dominion's proposed $67 billion merger with Nexterra,
Alexandria and Arlington are pushing
for stronger customer protections,
including more help for low-income households and clean
energy guarantees.
Residents can testify Thursday, Monday,
or Tuesday, or submit written comments.
People can register through the State Corporation Commission website.
Tributes tonight for a man stabbed
to death near several businesses in Montgomery County.
Fox 5's Shamari Stone in Wheaton tonight with the latest.
Right now the suspect is still on the loose
as police continue to investigate.
Around the corner from where I'm standing is where friends of the man
who was killed had a candlelight vigil.
Standing in sadness at the scene where
the man in his 40s was stabbed to death
out here on the 11,000 block of Elkin Street in Wheaton.
Shortly after midnight on Sunday,
some people tell me the man and the suspect knew each other,
were hanging out at a nearby bar and got in an argument.
The dispute continuing outside into the street.
And that's when they say the suspect stabs their friend.
And leaves the scene.
Tonight, police have not released a description of the suspect
or the name of the man who was killed.
Business owners and some bartenders telling us there has
been a lot of crime in this area,
which is near the mall and the Wheaton Metro stop.
This guy says he knows the man who was killed.
It's shocking because I knew the person.
I knew him. He's a good friend of mine.
He also worked on my car at the auto repair shop where I did my work.
So I've known him for a few years.
He's one of the nicest people you could ever meet.
You know, he's down to earth, never caused problems for anybody,
which is a good thing around here
because there's quite a few people that do cause trouble, you know.
But he wasn't one of those people.
And tonight, Montgomery County Police tell me
that they will release the name of the man who was killed tomorrow.
Meanwhile, if you have any information about this fatal stabbing,
call Montgomery County Police.
In Wheaton, I'm Shamari Stone.
Back to you.
Family testimony and blood evidence on day 15
of the Naresh Bhat murder trial in Prince William County.
A Manassas Park man accused of the 2024 killing of his wife,
Mamta Koffel, and dismembering her body.
Her brother told the jury today about concerns
for her safety and her marriage.
A forensic expert also broke down an analysis
of blood allegedly found in the family's home.
Again, after you received this photograph from Mamta,
did Mamta say this to you?
I am not safe.
After Mr. Bhamda sent you this photo,
you said that you are not safe here and that you are not safe.
Yes, that is.
There was.
The blood that's in this part of the carpet has
to have come in the context of the scene,
has to come from above.
It correlates with what was...
The pattern that was seen with the blue star on the top surface.
So no visible blood on the carpet,
but enhancement with looking at it with luminol.
You can see this pattern that's directly above where you see
the stain that's now on the underside of the carpet.
Bhat is facing first-degree murder.
His wife's body has never been found.
When we come back here at 11, Victory Monday for Commanders fans.
We're looking ahead to the second half of the season
and a potential run for the division title after the break.
One of the top football programs in Maryland forced
to forfeit four wins this season.
The undefeated team at Wise High School in Prince George's County lost
its appeal to the State Athletic Association.
A player was accused of violating residency requirements.
The Pumas went from 8-0 to 4-4 on the eve of the playoffs.
I think that the school needs
to really probably reevaluate whether it's recruiting or it's
not recruiting for this particular locality.
And if they are recruiting,
then ultimately they probably need to figure out ways to consider
fairness for students that live there
and students that don't live there.
Last year, the 18-2 boys basketball team
at Wise was forced to forfeit all wins
after similar issues with ineligible students.
Commanders fans likely still feeling good tonight.
24 hours after the team beat the Eagles in prime time,
Fox Sports' Josh Rosenthal has a check-in with the fans
and head coach Dan Quinn.
Fans had their heads held high leaving here last night, which is great,
although today head coach Dan Quinn made clear
this team still has a long way to go.
We need plenty of work on penalties,
false starts in particular, and corrections that
eliminate beating ourselves.
I'm
going
That's the thing that kept us, honestly,
from playing what I would consider a complete game,
the fouls and things that can eliminate to make sure we don't do that.
to go
ahead
And so you may ask how many times am I going
to keep saying that, and my response would be
and get
is...
As many as it effin' takes.
Yep, it wasn't always pretty Sunday night,
but the Commanders did get the win against a division rival.
started.
Coach Quinn saying Monday that he appreciated the team's resilience
from about the end of the first quarter on.
He also mentioned being pleased with the defensive takeaways,
some explosive plays on offense,
and he specifically shouted out Luke McCaffrey in the return game.
As for how fans are feeling...
Anecdotally, I will tell you,
we saw a lot of Commanders gear being worn out and about today.
And so, given how optimistic people were before the season,
now that we're approaching the midway mark,
now the team has maybe overcome some of those early season struggles,
we wanted to ask fans to give us
their thoughts on the rest of the year.
I think we'll be okay. It was a start off a little rough start,
but I think we're going to be okay.
Finally putting the right foot in the right step.
I am hearing a little bit more optimism today than I expected.
Let's put the past in the past and let's look at the future.
The fan base is pumped.
I think this win kind of revitalized
their stance with their fans.
Bright future ahead?
Bright future ahead.
How confident are you?
Out of 10?
Yeah.
On a scale of 1 to 10?
I give it a good seven and a half, eight.
Oh, we'll take that.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
The team's back here Sunday, one o'clock against the Rams.
You can catch the game on Fox 5 DC.
Guys.
Potential season-ending injury for Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
The head coach says he needs surgery on his thumb.
Jackson was hurt yesterday on the first play in his first start
after missing three games with a leg injury.
The Buffalo Bills went on to a 36-10 victory.
Baltimore is now 4-4 on the season and down to their third-string QB.
The road to the championship is set for the Washington Spirit.
The team will host the Portland Thorns in the opening round
of the NWSL playoffs this weekend at Audi Field.
The Spirit won their final regular season match last night,
shutting out the Chicago Stars 2-0.
Kickoff of the quarterfinal match is set for 3 p.m. Sunday.
All right, yes, it is Monday night,
but yeah, our eyes are on the weekend.
A live look at the National Harbor from our Fox 5 Skycam.
Mike, we got big sporting events this weekend,
but we also have Election Day tomorrow,
so a lot to, in the weather department,
as people get out and about this week.
Right, well, the good news is I can put weather worries
to bed for a lot of those, mostly tomorrow.
Let's talk about tomorrow, Election Day.
Get out to vote, and I don't think weather's going to be a problem.
If you're doing it in the morning, you need the jacket.
Afternoon, shorts and T-shirt will be just fine.
We're going to have sunshine and temperatures returning to the 70s.
The one thing that you've got to remember,
welcome back to Standard Time, where the sun goes down earlier.
506 tonight, 505 tomorrow.
Saturday, 5.01, and then hello to those sunsets that no one likes,
the ones that come before 5 o'clock in the evening.
So you get home from work, you get home from school,
and the sun's already really setting across the D.C. region.
Saturday, the 14th, 4.55, and then the 21st of the month, 4.50 p.m.,
earliest sunset, just so you know, 4.45,
and we actually do that in early December,
between the 4th and the 9th of December.
Once we get beyond the 9th,
we start adding daylight back bit by bit on the sunset.
Now, another nice warm-up on the way, despite these earlier sunsets.
Remember, we're still getting just as much daylight.
Just kind of switched the hours around a little bit.
So, still able to heat things up.
And 70s will be back by tomorrow afternoon.
Live look, Frederick, Maryland, Skycam.
Skies are clearer up there.
They're in the 40s already up there in Frederick, Maryland.
D.C., not far from the 40s.
We're sitting at 52 right now, despite a southwest wind.
It is still a cool to chilly night across much
of the mid-Atlantic region.
43, there you are in Frederick, Maryland.
50 for Gaithersburg, 49 Leonardtown, as well as Fredericksburg,
Virginia, Culpeper's at 45, Manassas 44, Martinsburg 47.
Still a lot of 50s, lower 50s out there too, just like here in D.C.,
Dallas, Winchester, Hagerstown all also 52 degrees. While Cum-
be
land Maryland's 53, Leonardtown you're at 49 at this hour.
Overnight lows into the mid to upper 40s in many locations.
Leonardtown, well you're already at 49 so you're going
below
Golf effort down the 43, Manassas you too.
Frederick, you're kind of right where you're
53.
going to be as well, about 42 degrees.
Have cloudy here.
That was for earlier tonight.
Those clouds have since cleared on out,
and skies should remain mostly clear with just a few passing clouds
as we head into the early morning hours tomorrow.
Satellite and radar not showing you much here tonight, nor should it.
Now, big picture showing you where a stronger storm system is.
In fact, this has almost a spring look to it
with numerous tornado watch boxes out tonight.
Thankfully, haven't seen too much in the way of confirmed tornadoes.
That's always a good thing, but some strong
thunderstorms going through the southern plains.
Why is that worth mentioning for us?
Well, that cold front is on the way to us here
in Washington, and while it won't bring
severe weather later this week,
it is that front that will bring us our...
Finally, a chance for some rain showers here to put an end to this big,
long, dry streak we've been under here in Washington.
High pressure, though, going to keep us dry again tomorrow.
Mostly sunny skies, some clouds coming across from time to time,
but really not all that bad.
Warm for this time of year.
Look, 70s as we get deeper and deeper into November,
they typically get rarer and rarer.
So low to mid-70s, more than 10 degrees above
the seasonal average for this time of year.
So no excuses for the weather
not keeping you inside and keeping you away.
From voting tomorrow, it is your American right, American duty.
Get out there and do your voting thing.
Weather will be fantastic for it.
In fact, next couple of days, not bad at all.
73 official high tomorrow.
For about 76 there on Wednesday,
that would be 13 degrees above average for your Wednesday afternoon.
Clouds will be on the rise then ahead of that next frontal system.
Here you can see it going across portions
of the Midwest through the day tomorrow and Wednesday.
As we finally get into Thursday, we'll have the chance.
Now, it'll be weakening.
You'll see that kind of that deeper green kind
of get scattered out over to a lighter green
by the time we work our way towards the afternoon hours.
So we're not expecting it to be a washout or even to get a lot.
A lot of rain here, but we just want something at the airport
to end this long streak that we've had here in Washington,
which is, again, up to 16 straight days without any rain now
at Reagan National Airport.
Seventy-five there Thursday.
Some rain showers possible Friday.
It looks like our eastern zones have the better chance of that.
Then for those sporting events this weekend,
we do get a little cooler, more seasonal.
Have a passing shower on Sunday.
Chances look pretty low of that as of tonight, though,
but those temperatures should return to the 60s.
Kenneth?
All right, Mike, thank you.
A NASA space telescope is falling back to Earth,
and it's expected to come crashing through the atmosphere Wednesday.
NASA says most of the Swift Observatory,
which weighs about 3,200 pounds, should burn up during reentry.
But some heavier pieces could survive and reach the ground.
The debris is expected to fall into the ocean,
but several regions around the world are within its potential path.
NASA says the risk of anyone being hurt is...
Extremely low, about 1 in 2,100.
When we come back, a new push to make it easier
for students to have access to quality health care.
We're taking a closer look at how it works next.
Fallout tonight from the Trump administration's
unexpected low flyover in the district.
Top Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth demanding answers from the FAA.
The newer Air Force One flew over
the White House twice last week during a Halloween celebration.
The flyover startled residents
and temporarily disrupted operations at Reagan National.
Duckworth calling it dangerous and a waste of taxpayer money.
I checked the flight tracking data
and the plane was quite low while it was flying over D.C.
Its altitude ranged from as low
as around 400 feet to around 1,000 feet.
The FAA and Defense Department claim they will respond
to the senator privately.
Joint Base Andrews is preparing
for a new era in its helicopter operations.
The Air Force has selected Andrews
as the preferred location for 26 new helicopters.
Military officials say they'll bring
increased speed, range, and payload capacity.
The aircraft will replace the aging fleet of Hueys,
which served the base for more than 60 years.
The Huey has been a legacy helicopter and has been phenomenal,
extremely safe, extremely awesome.
But especially in this particular environment, it's also good to have
To come up with something new, right?
To match their demands that are here in the National Capital League.
The Air Force expects the new unit
to be fully operational by the year 2030.
A new partnership set to make health care more accessible
for students and staff in Loudoun County.
The school district has launched a new program
with HealthWorks for Northern Virginia.
It includes medical, dental and behavioral health services.
This program is going to remove the barriers,
whether it be transportation, whether it be our uninsured population,
whether it just be challenges with scheduling and working to get
in to see your medical, dental and behavioral health folks.
The initiative also includes new mobile health units that will bring
care directly into school communities.
Loudoun County Public Schools has nearly 80,000 students
and more than 13,000 staff members.
When we come back, well, you got to give them credit for trying
while officers said we got to give them a ticket.
We'll explain. Stay with us.
An Arizona driver tried to pull off
a HOV lane trick, but troopers were not fooled.
Police say
the driver was caught with a creepy mask placed over
the passenger seat headrest to make it look
It looked like someone else was in the car.
The driver got a ticket for the HOV violation.
Officers, with a reminder for drivers tonight,
masks don't count as passengers. Well, we've got a special treat.
