Federal investigators are working to find out what caused
a private jet from Austin to crash
in Florida, killing all nine people on board.
Video recorded by passers-by captured the
terrifying moment Sunday
when the Bahamas-bound aircraft plunged from the sky and exploded in a
busy neighborhood near West Palm Beach.
600 people were forced to evacuate their homes.
The National Transportation Safety Board today said
the aircraft appeared to be starting to
To break apart before it made impact.
Fox 4's Dionne Anglin reports.
Just over 24 hours after nine lives aboard
a Learjet 60 aircraft were lost in Palm Beach
County, Florida, the NTSB on Monday.
I want to express our profound condolences to the family
and friends of those who were
lost in this tragedy.
Shared compassion
and details of its laser focused effort to uncover the facts of the
accident.
Noting in-flight transmissions involving a weather cell with light ice
and moderate turbulence.
Very soon after, the crew transmitted, we are picking up precipitation,
requesting to climb to 37,000 feet if able,
which was approved by FAA air traffic control.
Moments later, a distress call.
A transmission from the airplane announced the descent,
followed by a Mayday call.
About 1248 Eastern, the airplane transmitted, we
are in an overspeed condition descending with the rest unintelligible.
Subsequent communications described that the airplane
was descending rapidly and gave an altitude call out.
The jet slammed nose first into a roadway in a residential area.
The two-person crew and seven passengers took off
from Austin's Bergstrom International Airport
and were bound for the Bahamas.
The co-pilot identified by her family as 20-year-old
Nathalia Gadella of Boca Raton, Florida.
She earned her pilot's license at just 17
and worked for a charter jet company in Florida.
The other pilot identified as 55-year-old Jeff Gregory,
and it is not clear who was at the controls when the jet crashed.
As well, two passengers are identified
as an Austin Tech entrepreneur and his wife.
Their two children were also on board,
along with their nanny and two family friends, according to TMZ.
A joint statement from the family said in part,
with broken hearts, our families share
that Adam Robinson and Helen Sharp,
their children, Emma and Charlie, Rachel Reed and
Charmi Fair and Anita Maria Apelido-Cetina
were among those lost aboard the flight.
Officials say the aircraft when built was outfitted with a black box,
though it is unclear if the device was still in place.
They also say there is evidence
the aircraft began breaking apart before the impact,
noting the vast area that must be carefully documented.
They urge anyone who finds debris
not to disturb it, but rather contact authorities.
We've just begun our documentation.
We have a lot of work to do on scene.
Thank you.
This will be a several-day process,
and the biggest obstacle that we're going to have
is recovering the major wreckage
from the impacted crater on the roadway.
The crash investigation could last weeks or longer.
Our mission is to understand not just what happened,
but why it happened,
and to recommend changes to prevent it from happening again.
We will not be determining the probable cause of the crash
while we're here on scene,
nor will we speculate about the cause. Dionne Anglin, Fox 4 News.
