Hello all you freedom-loving people.
Just before the election,
a Michigan Democrat crossed party lines to back the Republican
and her staff started to quit.
Wall Street is gaming out what control
of Congress could mean for AI and the dollar
after tomorrow's election.
The FBI says that it identified North Korea behind
the $6.3 billion Binance heist and
Poland's president turned his plane around mid-flight.
But why?
Okay, let's get into it.
Two days before the midterm elections,
an internal dispute erupted within the Michigan
Democratic Party.
A sitting Democratic congresswoman, Haley Stevens, and Abdul El-Sayed
faced off in the Democratic primary this August.
El-Sayed won by a narrow margin. Although Stevens
had previously endorsed El-Sayed,
the two recently fell out over the issue of Israel.
Stevens asked El-Sayed to publicly condemn
a campaign advert that was perceived as having
anti-Semitic undertones. The advertisement appeared
to suggest that Israel was responsible for rising
food prices in the United States.
El-Sayed rejected her request, arguing that the United
States should stop providing financial aid to Israel
and instead use that money domestically.
And now the dispute between Stevens and Al-Saeed is escalating.
So Stevens has switched sides to support the Republican candidate.
At a church in Detroit, she announced her support for Mike Rogers,
the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Michigan,
rather than the Democratic nominee, Abdul Al-Saeed.
Stevens attended a church event with Rogers yesterday morning.
Afterwards, outside the church,
the two held an impromptu press conference side by side.
Stevens said that this was her personal decision.
And a church event that was originally scheduled for yesterday,
which was to be attended by Stevens, Al-Sayed,
and the U.S. Representative Jim Clyburn, ultimately did not take place.
Al-Sayed withdrew his invitation to Stevens.
In a video posted on X After the Church event, Stevens said,
I don't belong in Abdul's campaign.
Who we are as Michiganders is not hate, and that is not what we
are getting out of our Democratic nominee right now.
And President Trump endorses Rogers.
He praised Stevens' decision as courageous.
In a post on True Social, President Trump said,
Her following is huge, and the level
of respect from the people of Michigan,
especially our African-American and Jewish populations,
is virtually unparalleled.
Haley said what few people are willing to say,
It's a thing called bravery, and few people have it like just displayed
by Congresswoman Haley Stevens.
Michigan is one of the handful
of highly competitive Senate races nationwide.
Stevens received a significant share of the black vote
in the Democratic primary earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Al-Said has now been trying to win over the black voters.
Former President Obama attempted to assist him
in this endeavor at a rally last weekend.
When asked about Stevens' endorsement, Al-Said told reporters that
He was focused on the problems that Michiganders are facing.
He said yesterday, at the end of the day,
I don't think about Haley Stevens.
None of this matters.
Stevens's decision stunned many of her fellow Democrats.
Many of Stevens's staff reportedly resigned
immediately after her announcement.
Chuck Schumer called Stevens's endorsement of Rogers
a despicable betrayal of her political party.
U.S. midterm elections will take place
tomorrow based on past experience.
Midterm elections typically
do not trigger significant market volatility.
However, this year's election results could influence
U.S. government spending,
AI regulatory policies, and the business investment environment,
which in turn could affect the performance of stocks,
bonds, and the U.S. dollar.
Reuters noted that investors are assessing how
the election results will affect the market outlook.
Ever since President Trump returned to the White House in 2025,
the Republicans gained control of both the Senate
and the House of Representatives.
The S&P 500 index has risen by about 27 percent.
This was driven primarily by massive capital expenditures
by AI-related companies and
growth in corporate profits.
If the Democratic Party wins both the House of Representatives
and the Senate, investors
expect Congress to impose stricter regulations on AI,
which would put pressure on the market.
The Democrat.
Democratic Party would
also gain greater authority to investigate corporations and regulatory
agencies while seeking to slow the pace of deregulation
and this could lead to increased
market volatility.
And if the Democrats win the House of Representatives
but the Republicans retain control of the
Senate, then the impact
on the U.S. fiscal situation will be a mixed bag.
Investors believe that a divided Congress increases
the risk of a government shutdown
and a standoff over the debt ceiling.
If the market believes
that such policy maneuvering could weigh on economic growth,
then the dollar may weaken.
And if the Democratic Party performs more strongly in Congress,
the greatest impact may be felt in AI-related transactions.
Congressional investigations could heighten public concerns about
the rapid expansion of data
centers. Investors were originally optimistic about
the growth prospect of AI, and any doubts
about its rapid growth could lead to sharp market volatility.
If the Republicans are able to
maintain control of both chambers of Congress,
then investors expect the White House to push
for further tax reforms or increased defense spending.
However,
The risk of new AI regulatory measures being introduced
and congressional investigations being launched will be relatively low.
The mastermind behind the $6.3 billion digital currency hack
from Binance has been identified.
The FBI said that it observed
a North Korean actor identified as Trader Trader
converting the stolen assets into other cryptocurrencies.
Most of those conversions went into the cryptocurrency Ethereum.
President Trump said on Saturday
that if North Korea was indeed responsible,
then the United States would communicate
with North Korean authorities regarding the matter.
The cyber attack that Binance suffered
on Thursday evening was the largest cryptocurrency
loss in history. $6.3 billion in digital currency
was transferred through wallets that were linked
Hi everyone,
firstly I
want to thank
you for the
support.
Difficult times like this are a great reminder how strong
our industry is when we work together.
We are grateful to our partners
that acted quickly to freeze the hacked assets,
to global law enforcement
who we are working with hand in hand to seek justice.
But most of all, we are grateful to our users
for their patience and understanding.
Rest assured that we are working non-stop to resolve this,
to make the users whole and live up to your trust.
I want to be clear, we are committed
to covering all hacked losses through our company funds.
Your assets are safe.
On Saturday, Binance announced that approximately 90%
of the affected assets had been replenished
with 10 of those tokens now 100% backed by assets.
The company will continue to purchase
the remaining affected tokens to fulfill
Binance's commitment to not pass on losses to the clients.
The sources of funding for this capital replenishment include
the Secure Asset Fund for Users, the SAFU,
a portion of the Contract Insurance Fund, and Binance's own funds.
Subsequently, the company will replenish
the SAFU fund to approximately $1 billion to ensure
it remains capable of responding to emergencies and protecting users.
Yesterday, Binance resumed withdrawal services for Bitcoin,
Ethereum, and certain stablecoins,
and they stated that Binance would resume withdrawal services
for other cryptocurrencies in phases.
On Friday, the price of Bitcoin fell more than 5%,
dropping to about $77,000.
This reflects market concerns about cryptocurrencies.
Other affected cryptocurrencies saw declines of up to 9%.
In a dramatic move,
Polish president Karol Nawrocki turned back his plane on the way to
Senegal late on Friday
and headed for the constitutional tribunal headquarters in
central Warsaw since the tribunal's president had been suspended.
The battle between Polish President Karol Nawrocki
and Prime Minister Donald Tusk's
pro-European government over control
of the judiciary has been going on for a long time.
Recently, some of the new government-appointed judges
are currently attempting to take control
of the courts. However, the former court leadership,
supported by the president
and the opposition party,
refuses to recognize the legitimacy of these appointments.
Late on Friday, the longest serving judge,
Anna Korvin-Piotrowska, had suspended Bogdan
Szwajkowski, the tribunal's president,
and announced that she was now in charge of the court.
Szwajkowski stated that Piotrowska
was not authorized to make such a decision,
accusing those involved of staging a coup.
And so an absurd scene unfolded.
On Saturday, the Polish Constitutional Tribunal...
posted a notice on its official website
announcing that President Bogdan Szwajkowski
and Vice President Sohański
had been suspended from duty for one month.
However, the Constitutional Tribunal's official social media account
immediately posted a statement saying
that its official website had been illegally hijacked
and that Szwajkowski remained the president of the tribunal.
At the time,
President Nawrocki was on his way to Senegal for a state visit.
Just as the plane was flying over southern Spain,
an urgent message arrived from back home saying,
police have moved in outside
the Constitutional Tribunal building in Warsaw and the court's
leadership is being taken over.
And so the scene that we described at the beginning unfolded.
And Nawrocki ordered the presidential plane to turn around in midair.
The trip was canceled and they returned to Warsaw.
And riot police have been guarding
the tribunal building since Friday afternoon
with several hundred protesters gathered
to demand Szwajkowski's reinstatement.
It was already 1 a.m. when Nawrocki arrived at the tribunal building.
He entered the Constitutional Tribunal together with Zbigniew Kapinski,
the first president of the Supreme Court.
And video from the scene show that the president got
into a scuffle with judges at the building's
entrance.
And upon entering the court, Nawrocki
said directly to some of the new judges,
you are not judges of the Constitutional Tribunal.
Before 5 a.m., Nawrocki had already left the courthouse.
Paweł Schafernik, the chief of staff to the president,
read a statement on behalf of the president outside the courthouse.
It said, tonight, there was a breach
of public order in the Republic of Poland
and a forcible takeover of a constitutional body.
Nawrocki urgently called a meeting
of representatives from all parliamentary factions
citing threats to Poland's internal security.
The aim was to consult on the matter
and to stabilize the political situation and restore
constitutional order.
In a Saturday evening speech addressing the ongoing crisis, Tusk
accused conservative nationalist opposition leaders
of wanting to destroy democracy and
rule of law. He said, let's call things by their name.
For years in Poland,
there exist organizations and politicians
who wish to destroy democracy and rule of law.
The European Union had accused his predecessors,
the Law and Justice Party, the PIS, of subverting.
Tusk said,
This process is difficult, at times even painful,
and requires decisive action.
There's no other way.
Followers of the PIS gathered outside the court on Saturday,
extending protests that have been running
for weeks in support of PIS-friendly judges.
And this political crisis continues to escalate.
Jakub Kumań, Poland's ambassador to China,
was the first to announce his resignation.
In a post on X, Kumań said in Polish,
In view of the events in the country,
I conclude that it is not possible for me to continue
performing my duties.
He concluded that he could no longer carry out his functions.
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski replied within minutes saying,
I acknowledge the unprofessional conclusion of your mission.
You no longer represent the Republic.
But Marcin Padacz, the head
of the Presidential International Policy Bureau,
described the diplomat's move as a manifestation of courage
and responsibility for Polish democracy.
He wrote, this is an expression of courage
and responsibility for Polish democracy
and the image of the Republic of Poland in the world.
Paweł Soluch, another Duda-era ambassador,
has also resigned over the tribunal dispute.
Following Kumań's resignation,
a number of officials both in Poland and abroad announced
their resignations
or publicly declared their loyalty solely to the president.
So how did Poland end up in this situation?
Poland operates under a semi-presidential system,
also known as a dual head system,
in which the prime minister heads the government
and the president serves as the head of state.
The prime minister is responsible for domestic affairs
and for the implementation of government
policies, but the president holds key veto
and checks and balances powers.
The Constitutional Tribunal is Poland's top court
for deciding constitutional matters.
It has been at the center of a years-long political saga
that is related to the politicization of
Polish courts. The long-running political dispute dates back to 2015
when Law and Justice sought to
appoint judges to seats that were already filled
by the previous government. Szwajkowski, whom the
The PiS appointed during the 2015 to 2023 government.
was accused of using his power as head of the court
to block Parliament from electing new judges.
After taking office in 2023,
the Tusk government refused to recognize the legitimacy
of the Constitutional Tribunal's current composition.
Tusk argued that the court's judges were not politically neutral.
He pledged to restore the rule of law and to reform the court.
But law and justice ally
Nawrocki has acted to thwart those efforts ever since
his election as president in 2025. Earlier
this year, Nawrocki refused to swear in three
of six judges that were nominated by parliament
and Szwajkowski declined to seat judges that were elected
by the current parliamentary majority.
Last month, Parliament appointed Tusk ally Magia Berakt to the tribunal,
which critics said undermined the government's stated goal
of restoring checks and balances.
Tusk said that Szwajkowski's removal was a painful
but necessary decision to restore
the rule of law in Poland after years of erosion under PIS rule.
And on Saturday,
The European Commission urged Nawrocki
to accept the nomination of new judges,
which is at the center of the country's constitutional crisis.
And that's a wrap for this episode.
