Today, we learned the names of three of the four people
shot and killed in Deep Ellum over the weekend.
So in addition to the deaths,
15 others suffered injuries in three separate shootings in the same
area in just more than an hour.
We're going to have more on the victims a little bit later.
But right now, federal officials are announcing
a new action to combat crime in the area.
Fox 4's Sean Rabb, live in studio with what
those officials had to say. Sean.
Yeah, a big news conference today,
and this was a statement news conference as much as anything else.
I mean, it was held in Deep Ellum
on Main Street near one of the shooting scenes.
The goal, to keep what happened Saturday night
from becoming the norm in Deep Ellum,
and with all the support of federal government resources,
a new safety net being draped over Deep Ellum
starting today called Operation Deep Cover.
Instead of night filled with music and memories,
three separate shootings happened,
leaving four people dead and 15 injured that we know of.
That is not a night out. That is a community in mourning.
U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould saying the deadly violence that marred
Halloween night in Deep Ellum will not be accepted as normal.
Today we are announcing Operation Deep Cover.
We will cover every inch of Deep Ellum with law enforcement.
Some officers will wear uniforms, others will wear plain clothes.
If you're thinking about committing a crime here,
you will not know who's watching.
We will have increased state, local and federal presence.
You'll only know that someone is.
And it starts right now with actions, not just words.
Trivion Demby will face those actions.
He was arrested Saturday night with a gun
that he was pointing at people
when a Dallas officer ran to him and made the arrest.
Demby has four felony arrests for aggravated robberies and on parole,
a felon in possession of a firearm.
This individual here that was walking around
with a gun, pointing a gun,
he's probably going to look at about 15 years for doing this.
Been arrested four times for aggravated robberies,
four times walking the streets of Deep Ellum,
unacceptable. And with our partners, they're gonna feel it.
You come out here with weapons, you come out here doing bad.
You're gonna feel it from DPD and all the federal partners.
The US Attorney says his office will go
back through previous cases in Deep Ellum
and old cases will become new.
And the facts are that if you come here and you hurt people,
it has created a problem for the business owners
and for the other people that just
wanna enjoy the music and the good food and I'm coming for you.
Chief Como defending Saturday night
safety plan saying the team was in place,
extra officers were assigned and his department showed up.
Dealing with three different crime scenes.
And one officer was able to bring someone back to life
by doing life-saving measures after he was shot.
The plan was there. It was in place. It was good.
Unfortunately, we still had three separate shootings
that occurred within an hour and a half of each other.
Some things that, you know, we can't control,
but this is the responsibility of everyone.
DPD is going to definitely do their part.
We're going to continue to do our part.
And this is what right looks like.
That reference to what right looks like
is all of law enforcement working together.
Operation Deep Cover will be a very targeted law enforcement effort.
No more hanging out just to hang out in Deep Ellum.
And Rayville, the U.S. attorney, says his office
is working with the county sheriff's office.
So as people are brought into the jail,
his attorneys will be looking to charge them with federal charges.
And if they can, they will.
Federal time is a lot different from state time.
In the federal system, whatever your sentence is,
you serve almost all of it day for day.
They're hoping that will...
Be a deterrent to people thinking about coming to Deep Ellum to do bad.
Sean Ravin, studio shot.
Thanks.
All right.
And we will have the very latest information
on the shootings as it becomes available.
At 530, we're going to hear from the sister
of one of the victims killed in the violence.
Stay tuned for continuing coverage on the investigation on air,
on our website and streaming on Fox Local.
