We want to get you to a story along
the Central Coast now. This was breaking news
overnight into the early morning hours on the beach
of Moss Landing State Beach. This is very
close to Salinas, if you're familiar in Monterey County.
There was a deadly shooting. Two people
killed, we learned later. Others were injured.
Unclear about the shooter involved,
the shooter was in custody or still at large.
The county officials there said that the threat to the public,
there was never an ultimate threat to the public.
This shooting happening very early
in the hours today on this Monday morning.
And we have on the scene from our sister station up
in the Bay Area and Ruben with KTVU.
She is there on that state beach in Moss Landing where there
is a whole lot of evidence left behind.
And what's the latest?
Last hour, authorities cleared the scene
and reopened this section of beach,
but right now they have few answers as to what actually happened here,
and they say this is just the beginning of a very long investigation.
Okay.
Okay.
Right now, as you can see, we've got, you know, quite a scene out here.
You know,
I'm going to step out of the way and show you what was left behind.
Sure.
This appears to be the remnants of a beach party.
So we can see women's shoes, a speaker, leftover,
you know, cups and bottles of alcohol, that sort of thing.
We actually met a young man just a few minutes ago.
He said he was here last night.
And that he heard the gunshots and was forced to run,
dropped his cell phone in the process,
which is why he was back out looking for it.
So, you know, authorities have not said,
you know, whether the people were involved knew
each other, only that there were two deceased
who were found on a road just over the sand
dunes from here.
There were two others who were injured,
one of whom had non-life-threatening injuries,
was transported to the hospital from here at the beach.
Another person showed up.
On his or her own at a hospital with gunshot wounds,
so two additional people injured there and you know,
authorities still trying to figure out whether these people knew
each other and they are still trying to find out whether this party
on the beach was the beginning of whatever unfolded after.
But they said they're just keeping all options open.
It's too soon to speculate.
We did ask whether any weapons were found here at the scene,
and they are not telling us that.
We asked whether there was a possibility that there
was a shooter still at large, and they said that is a possibility.
They're, you know, leaving all options open at this point. Marla?
Yeah, so, Anne, we earlier during that press conference, I think
that was during the noon hour, we did bring that to our viewers live.
And they were pretty tight-lipped.
Not a whole lot of details were given, to your point.
When they say that the possibility
that the shooter could still be out there,
does that mean that there's nobody in custody for this?
Again, they're not telling us really anything about that.
They wouldn't say whether weapons were recovered.
I've heard, you know,
The implication, I think, was that there was nobody in custody.
But they've said they're not releasing many details at all.
So I would say we have more questions than answers at this point.
Yeah, I would, I would agree with that. That was several hours ago
and they haven't released the identities of the victims.
And this seems to be a party that was taking place overnight there
at Moss Landing State Beach. This is in Marin, not Marin, pardon me.
I'm thinking of you being from KTVU
in Monterey County along the Central Coast. Okay.
And anything else, anything else you'd like to add?
I just think they've reopened the beach now,
so we are seeing people starting to show up here.
They said that they're going to have, through California State Parks,
some increased park ranger patrols over the coming days just
to offer a little reassurance to the public.
Okay, yeah.
That, I'm sure, would be nice for the public there.
So, Ann Rubin from our sister station up in the Bay Area,
KTVU, live there at Moss Landing State Beach,
which, as you just heard her say, it has since reopened.
And definitely a lot of that evidence is still left behind there.
So, Ann, thank you so much.
