Today, federal investigators are expected
to share more about a fiery jet crash that killed
everyone on board in South Florida.
That jet took off from Austin yesterday morning and was headed
to the Bahamas. Dan Godwin joining us now
in the studio with the latest on this tragedy. Dan.
And Brandon, it's not clear yet what caused the plane crash.
Aviation officials will try to pinpoint that.
There is a news conference scheduled for later
this morning in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The jet had taken off from Austin Bergstrom
International Airport Sunday morning
and was on a direct flight to the Bahamas.
Authorities say the aircraft hit a storm in South Florida.
Pilots reported turbulence, icing, and precipitation,
and requested to climb another 2,000 feet.
Moments later, though, a driver in a car recorded
the plane plummeting from the sky.
We're pausing the video before the moment of impact.
Experts say the plane's descent
from the sky reached up to 30,000 feet per minute,
and at rates that extreme, the aircraft simply cannot be saved.
You start to get to a situation where you exceed
the structural limits of the airplane
and then parts essentially start failing or even falling off.
And then at that point, the airplane is going to crash.
All nine people on board the plane died on impact.
The aircraft went down close to homes on a busy roadway,
but there are no reports of anyone on the ground being hurt or killed.
About 600 people living in the neighborhood were evacuated
while the crash is being investigated.
The Red Cross was on the scene to help with that.
Names of the nine people killed have not yet been released.
Dan Godwin on Good Day.
