Two DeKalb County police officers are recovering
in the hospital after being shot on the job.
It happened around 6.30 Sunday night
at an apartment complex on Boulder Crest Drive.
Police say 26-year-old DeMontavious Soho fired
at officers and then ran away.
He's now in custody.
Fox 2's Tara Jabbour joins us live
from DeKalb County Police Headquarters
with the night's latest information.
Tara?
Well, Tom, police went to this apartment complex
because of a domestic incident.
We know that medics rushed the two officers
and the suspect to the hospital.
They're expected to be okay,
but we're still waiting on an update on their condition tonight.
A domestic incident turned into an officer-involved shooting
in DeKalb County on Sunday night.
And during the encounter,
he fired on the officers when they encountered him at the door.
At least one officer was able to return fire.
Two of our officers were struck during the gunfire exchange.
The suspect, 26-year-old DeMontavious Soho,
ran away, but police caught him shortly after.
Medics took him to the hospital with a gunshot wound.
We were fortunate at this location. It has very good camera systems,
and we were able to get access to those cameras
and get a very good look out of the person we were looking for.
On Monday afternoon, we saw DeKalb County police officers searching
in the woods next to the apartment building.
Neighbors told us it was unusual to see such
a large police presence where they live.
I definitely was surprised. You don't expect to come home today.
Just coming home, it was like everywhere was blocked off.
The whole apartment basically was blocked off.
Nobody was able to get home. So it was just a crowd of people around.
I'd say like 12 to like one, two in the morning.
Neighbors told us when crime does happen at the apartment complex,
it is normally smaller, petty crimes.
They say they were shocked to hear that two officers were shot
for somebody to shoot the cops and get get off like that.
I'm surprised by any other instance.
They didn't get him before he was able to get off.
The GBI is now leading this investigation.
DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson says people need
to put the guns down.
When a community or individuals come under attack,
our officers are there to protect and serve.
In no circumstance should anyone walk into what our officers did.
And the suspect will be charged
with aggravated assault against a peace officer.
We'll, of course, keep you updated as we learn more.
But for now, reporting live from DeKalb County Police,
Tara Jabbour, Fox 5 News.
Wow. Tara, thanks.
