I'm here to provide an update regarding
an officer-involved shooting that took place
within the 52nd precinct in the Bronx.
Today is another example of our officers running
towards danger and putting their lives on
the line to keep New Yorkers safe.
The information I'm about to provide is preliminary
and subject to change.
The following is depicted on both surveillance cameras inside
and outside of the deli and from eyewitness accounts.
At approximately 3.20 p.m., a 49-year-old male was engaging
in a dispute with several individuals inside of Sammy Gourmet Deli,
located at Bainbridge Avenue and East 194th Street.
The male suddenly takes out a firearm, racks the weapon, and points it
at individuals within the deli, causing them to duck for cover.
A short time before, our subject
was in the deli harassing several people.
The subject then exits the deli
and begins walking northbound with the firearm in his right hand.
While walking, he begins to violently slam
the firearm into the glass window of the deli.
At this point, two uniformed officers
in a marked NYPD vehicle arrive on scene.
Observe the subject's actions
and immediately issue verbal commands for the subject to drop
the weapon. The subject not only disregarded
the order to drop the weapon, but instead
pointed the firearm directly at the officers.
At this point, there is an exchange
of gunfire between the officers and the subject.
As the subject discharges his weapon, he is continuing northbound
and firing behind him in broad daylight with civilians in the area.
During the exchange, the subject was struck by officers
who then took him into custody.
He is in stable condition and expected to survive.
The responding officers were taken
to a local area hospital for evaluation.
The following weapon was recovered on scene.
This entire incident was captured on both body-worn camera footage
and again from surveillance
cameras both inside and outside of the deli.
The Force Investigations Division will review
this incident. Our subject is 49-year-old Victor Soto.
He has eight prior arrests,
including multiple assaults and multiple arrests
for criminal possession of a firearm.
Again, our officers ran towards,
not away from someone who had a gun pointed at them.
This is the bravery that officers show
every day to protect New Yorkers.
I will now take questions.
Hi, folks.
We're going to take some on-topic questions regarding this incident.
Lewis Finley, New York One.
can you talk a little bit about the circumstances surrounding this incident
As I mentioned, he has eight prior arrests
and several for criminal possession of a firearm.
Carrie Burke, Daily News.
Yeah, in the deli, did his gun jam or did he just not fire at least?
That's part of the investigation.
What we know at this point is that he did point a firearm
at several individuals inside the deli.
Okay, we're going to go over to 1010 WINS, Amanda Alexander.
was he an EDP or anything?
Thank you.
We don't have that information at this time.
Okay, we're going to go over to Derek Waller, 6-11.
Can you tell us how many shots were fired?
That's part of the investigation. We don't have the exact number.
We're going to go over to the BBC, Sonya Racon.
Yeah, that's my question, but...
All right, folks, thank you very much. Thank you for your time.
Thank you for your time.
