Welcome back. Well, if you did not get enough sweets last night,
you are in luck because the Florida Key Lime Pie Festival
is getting ready to set up shop.
And this year they are in historic St. Augustine.
Here with all the details is the festival director himself,
Louie Moorhead. Louie, thank you for joining us this morning.
Glad to be here. Glad to be here the day after Halloween.
We're all full of sugar. We want more. You need more.
All right, and you brought more for us.
I did, I did.
Okay, so for years, Louie,
you guys have been set up shop in Brevard County.
We are.
Why switch?
Why head over to St. Augustine?
Well, I have the Florida Key Lime Pie Company.
We're located next to Ron Jon's Surf Shop.
I thought, well, you know,
this is a celebration of America's 250th birthday.
Why not bring it to America's oldest city?
Exactly.
St. Augustine.
Okay.
So what makes key lime pie Florida's favorite dessert?
Why is it so famous here in Florida?
Well, it's actually the official pie for the state
of Florida, and it was done by the state
legislature back in 2006.
But to answer your question,
the best way for you to find out would be to get a fork
and a slice.
Try it for yourself.
You do not have to ask me twice.
All right.
Put you on the spot.
I'm going to pull TJ in.
TJ, this is for you.
TJ is excited.
He's been excited since a little
age. Well,
Thank you so much.
You're welcome.
Willie, go ahead.
Tell us what you brought here today.
And this is just obviously a very small sampling
of what folks can expect if they head over to the festival.
Absolutely.
So this is our key lime pie by the slice.
This will be available at the festival.
Okay.
This is our key lime pie.
On a stick.
I was curious what that was.
This one's dipped in chocolate, clearly.
So why don't we do this?
You try a slice.
T.J., you try it.
Okay.
On a stick, dipped in chocolate.
That sounds great.
And then this is our restaurant-style deep dish
that we'll be having available at the
festival.
Oh, wow.
And folks can take this home with them.
Absolutely.
This is a 40-ounce pie.
40-ounce.
Deeper batter, deeper crust, pre-cut and date slices for $20.
Okay, Louie, as we break into these,
you're obviously, you know, the man with the plan.
Tell us what makes the best key lime pie.
And also settle for us the debate, because there's a big debate.
Whipped cream over meringue on top.
In our case, our recipe is as true to the original recipe as possible.
Okay.
Love that.
Three ingredients.
Three ingredients.
That's it.
That's all it takes.
Graham cracker crust.
Key lime juice and sweetened condensed milk.
That's it.
Wow.
I feel for you.
Okay.
All right, I'm going for it.
Okay.
Should I do it this way?
Just take that stick.
There you go.
Oh, like that?
You're probably going to need a napkin.
I bet I will.
Should I just dive right in?
Go for it, TJ.
Mmm, this is really good.
So if you order a key lime pie on a stick,
you want to eat that frozen like you would
a popsicle.
Wait, just three ingredients?
Oh my gosh.
Three ingredients.
Well, and that one has four.
Okay.
I've got the extra chocolate.
Louie, this is so good.
This is amazing, Louie.
Okay, as we're shoving our faces full of key lime pie
this morning, tell us about the festival.
I'm sure there's like pie eating contests,
tons of vendors, different flavors of key
lime pie.
I know like obviously you have the original, the OG.
So at our festival this year, we have five different contests.
One of our new contests is going to be a key lime style contest.
OK.
Style.
If you're going to give us a neon green,
you're going to wear a neon green or a bright bow tie,
a suit, sneakers, could be a tutu, could be a boa,
could be a hat, a veil.
OK.
If you look like Key Lime, you look bright, jump in the contest.
Audience participation, you could win.
Our second one is going to be, because of St. Augustine,
we're going to have a patriotic conquistador style contest.
So if you dress like a conquistador
and you throw some red, white, and blue
to help celebrate America's 250th birthday,
you're going to be in that contest.
But more importantly, our next contest and our most important contest
Our Key Lime Hula Hoop contest.
Oh, I love the sound of that.
I love that, Louie.
Hands down, I've got it.
I've got it.
How that works is...
We're going to have a stage full of adults,
kids, whatever, with hula hoops.
You're going to hula hoop and get your hula hoop on.
You're going to be tossed a miniature pie, a four-inch key lime pie.
You're going to catch it.
Oh.
Okay.
Continuing the hula hoop.
While you're holding the pie?
While you're holding the pies.
So the one who catches the most pies wins.
So maybe, TJ, you might have nine.
You may have five.
No, I've got ten.
If TJ's got nine, I've got ten.
I'm winning this hula hoop contest, Louie.
So that's how you do that contest.
I won a hula hoop contest in elementary school.
That's how you do that contest.
Our stage is 80 feet long.
Okay.
Mm-hmm.
So our next contest is our Key Lime Pie Toss Contest.
So we're going to start at 10 foot.
Mm-hmm.
20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70.
Right, right.
Tossing.
Yes.
That's a long way.
It is.
It's a thousand percent.
How does the pie not break apart?
It is messy.
Okay.
That's the best part, I guess, right?
I've already dropped some.
I actually already dropped some over here.
When you guys come to the test,
we'll make sure you change your clothes.
Okay.
Okay.
Because as that batter's thawing out,
it's going to get a little sloppy.
Oh, yeah.
It's going to get dicey up there, Louie.
I can tell.
So I'll put you up there as a team, but I might split you up.
Okay.
So when you're at 60 to 70 feet, it's going to get messy.
We got this.
We got this.
Usually, we're competitive.
I know.
We are.
Towards the end of the day, it's our key lime pie eating contest.
This is where TJ is going to take number one.
I did win a pie eating contest back in elementary,
or middle school, excuse me, middle school.
So we're going to take this deep dish.
This whole thing is what you would have to eat.
The deep dish, not the popsicle.
All of that in the least amount of time.
Oh my gosh, I might be in challenge right now, am I?
Do you think you could do it?
I don't know if I could.
Maybe I could.
So I don't tell you what the rules are.
It's audience participation on being a winner.
Okay.
I will tell you this.
It's messy.
Oh, I can imagine.
Yeah.
I'm sure I'll be wearing a lot of it.
Most of this festival sounds messy, Louie.
It does, Louie.
We do do something, and I don't usually tell people ahead
of time, you're going to wear
something goofy.
You're going to wear maybe a sombrero.
You might wear nerd glasses.
Okay.
You might wear goggly eyes.
You might wear fairy wings, a boa, whatever I find it.
The Dollar Tree.
Yeah.
Or maybe get Oriental Trading online.
Uh huh.
Yeah.
Gonna wear that.
So the goofier looking, the better.
Okay.
Makes it fun.
Alright.
Makes it a lot of fun.
And when is it all happening?
And how do we get tickets?
How do we go?
So this is a road trip.
Yep.
For everybody from here in Central Florida.
Sure.
And on the Space Coast.
To go to the most fun town, fun city,
in Northeast Florida, St. Augustine.
It's gonna be Saturday, November 14th.
Okay.
It's in downtown.
It's at Francis Field, next to the parking garage.
All day. Starts at 10, goes until 6.
Okay.
So Saturday, November 14th.
Bring your appetite.
Saturday, November 14th, St. Augustine.
That's not a bad, I've made the drive.
Come hungry, because 20 plus food trucks.
Oh, wow, that's great.
Plus key lime pie.
Now, is there a ticket cost to get in, or is admission...
It's $10 to get in for adults, $5 for children,
$5 to $12, and $4 and under are free.
I love that.
Okay, I have one question before we go.
Consistency, we were talking about that.
So what makes the consistency of a key lime pie good or bad?
I assume, like you said, this is...
classic original key lime pie. I feel like I've had key lime pies.
I'm like, oh, this is kind of like, I don't want to say loose,
but I feel like this is the perfect consistency.
You may have had key lime pie,
but I've never had Florida's best key lime pie. This is great.
It's delicious. And it's proprietary. It's a secret.
Oh, I love that. Well, I tell you what, it's delicious.
It's really good. I like this. So I expect to see you there. Yeah.
Well, my only question for you now, Louie, my final question is,
we've obviously got to have some judges to test.
So, I think I know of two people who would love to try that out.
I'm going to ask somebody to get you in.
Okay.
Make you be a judge.
Mm-hmm.
I love that.
Sounds like the right job for me.
Anything with food, Hannah knows, Louie, I'm in, 1,000%.
One more thing.
We are bringing our store from Cocoa Beach to St. Augustine.
It's a Key Lime Pie Everything store.
We're going to have Key Lime Pie jellies,
Key Lime Pie jams, Key Lime Pie, I'm sorry,
Key Lime Pie, Key Lime honey.
Okay.
Oh, wow.
Key Lime candy.
Okay.
Key Lime wine.
Oh.
Key Lime beers.
I'm not so sure that we're going to bring these to the festival.
It's possible.
Okay.
And this is what we call our Cocoa Beach Crap.
Oh my gosh, okay.
Give me some go-go beans crack.
Okay, Louie, as TJ samples one of those,
I'm going to thank you so much for coming this morning.
Louie Moorhead, Festival Director,
happening November 14th.
November 14th, Saturday.
$10 to get in Saturday, where it's going to be all the fun.
All right, TJ, while you've got your mouth closed,
you're going to have to take us to weather now.
