25 News now starts with breaking
news in the afternoon here in the
Boston 25 newsroom. We are following
that breaking news in Brighton where
police say they shot a man who charged
at them with a knife. That update in
just the last 30 minutes. Boston 25
news reporter Daniel Coats also at
that news conference with more on what
we have learned. Daniel, we are hearing
that the suspect is in critical
condition right now.
Yeah, that's what we're being told.
This all happened earlier this morning.
We're also told that the initial call from police
or two police came in at around 7 a.m.
Now, the initial call, police said, was for a mental health crisis
where a man was allegedly threatening
to hurt himself with a large knife.
Now, crews were told were able to arrive shortly after
at this scene that you're seeing right here.
They were able to remove the person who made that call,
from the home quickly after that while they set up
a perimeter with EMS around this Selkirk Road
home in Brighton. Now after about 20 minutes of de-escalation
and negotiation police said that man
charged officers that were on the porch with that large knife.
Now they retreated but police say
they fired one shot and hit the suspect.
Now he was rushed to the hospital
after police rendered aid.
He's now in critical condition as police and the DA
Begin their investigation.
Part of the investigation is always looking at all the officers
who were there and the equipment that they had.
But, you know, initially, there were certainly officers
that had other less lethal equipment on scene at the time.
Now the DA right now is leading this investigation
with the help of course of Boston police.
I asked the commissioner if any officers were hurt.
He said he had no injuries to report. However,
two officers were told were brought to the hospital for an evaluation.
It sounds like they are expected to be okay,
but they said that they're very early in this investigation
in a scary incident out of Brighton this morning on to the Boston.
