But I gotta start you with Hurricanes.
Is this the year Miami Hurricanes win the national title?
So I think it is, but I hate saying it out loud.
It has me nervous, but I'm sorry,
I look at everybody else in the country.
And I don't think anybody, our defense is not quite
as good as it was last year.
But the offense is better than it was last year. And I don't
see another team out there.
I mean, the only team that scares me is LSU. Like I have this
premonition that it's Miami LSU in
the national title game.
I don't know how LSU gets
there, but I think that would be,
I sort of look at LSU as having
the better offense in Georgia,
for instance.
I think it's Georgia, LSU, Miami.
Look, I have weird confidence
about the Notre Dame game.
I'm more nervous about this UNC
game on Halloween night and
just sort of being a little bit
look ahead, right?
as a player Dan, how much you know you know
the big games coming up what are you thinking about
going into this Saturday's game
as a player I will tell you what Jimmy Johnson used to do with
games like that we had these gap games it
was never really about the opponent it was about
the process Chuck so he would always tell us look we know
that game's coming up he would make it
exciting for us guys this is just one more step to get to your goal
so he taught us to be and do
things in steps if you want to walk yourself
to the national championship it takes steps how many
steps do you think it's going to take for you
and so every week was always a challenge we really
never even knew what our records was i think
this has got a lot to do with coaching and Mario
and their preparation, it's a coaching issue, yeah
this right now a game like that because i said the
same thing to Chris my producer, i go i'm
not really worried about the Notre Dame game that
much i'm worried about the game here with UNC
because Belichick can do things and by the way
they're four and three, they're better than they
were a year ago these are one of those games you
can stumble, you know, your foot here a little bit
and we'll be worrying about the next thing
and i think last year's championship run Chuck, i think
is really going to help them also in this
game yeah this is where you know it's funny uh you know
is Miami the number one team in the country
i think it's fair if people want
to say they haven't earned it yet now i think priors matter
i think Miami's playoff run should reassure folks
that we probably are physically as tough if not
tougher than some of these other teams
but it does you know it's funny to watch the SEC bias
work its will i'm not a Big 12 fan positive
or negative but correct me if i'm wrong the Big 12
seems as competitive as the SEC the competition
of the Big 12 means they only get one team in
the playoff the competition
in the SEC means they get four i didn't know that and look at BYU right
now i mean look at what they did to Notre Dame a couple weeks ago here
so i mean no question about
it here. Hey, Chuck, NIL, has it been good,
in your opinion, for college football?
So big picture, yes.
I was just at a conference that I helped put together,
that was a part of. I didn't put it together,
but I was a host of it on the prediction markets,
okay? And people get really worried about
the exploitation that takes place when a new system
gets implemented? Is there insider trading problems
with the prediction markets? There are.
Is there problems of boosters going haywire right now in NIL?
There is. But the bigger picture is
what? More players are getting more opportunity to showcase
who they are. And we have seen,
boy, parity in college football is a lot of fun.
You know what nobody loved when it was Alabama
versus Clemson four out of five years, right?
The diversification is something people like.
This has worked really well. So I think it's overall better.
I get we're in the middle of
this transition. Every year,
we're improving the system so that it isn't just totally nuts.
So now it's one transfer portal window instead of two.
Maybe we'll have, I do think you're gonna
need collective bargaining before you can sort
of have contracts that stick. We'll see how that
works. But overall, I think the product's better.
I think the competition is better.
And I think it is opened more.
Look, I think there's a max of the number of major schools
that can compete. It's probably in the 40 to 60 range.
But the SEC was trying to put it into the
15 to 20 range. So this is an improvement as far as I'm concerned.
