Armed men with automatic weapons, tasked with shooting down drones attacking Moscow, appeared for the first time on the roof of Lenin's Mausoleum. In a video published by the Cheka-OGPU on Friday, October 23, the "drone hunter" stands on the mausoleum, where, during the Soviet era, general secretaries greeted parades and marching columns, The Moscow Times reports. Also, according to the video, armed anti-drone fighters appeared on the Kremlin towers, and armored vehicles of mobile fire teams with anti-aircraft machine guns were stationed at the approaches to the building. Muscovites have repeatedly observed such equipment in the center of the capital during major Ukrainian drone strikes, as well as during preparations for the May 9th celebrations.

On October 23, the Moscow region experienced a massive Ukrainian drone strike. The attack paralyzed air traffic at the airports of the Moscow air hub. Evacuations were carried out at the IQ-Quarter high-rise building in Moscow City, home to the offices of the Ministry of Digital Development, the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology, and other agencies.

Several additional air defense rings were previously established in and around Moscow to defend against Ukrainian drones, which have attacked Russian refineries more than a hundred times this year, as well as marketplace warehouses, data centers, and defense manufacturing facilities. Truck-mounted aerial platforms manned by military personnel to shoot down drones have been deployed near the Moscow City shopping center, and Pantsir air defense systems have been deployed on the roofs of the Rosneft office and the premium residential complex Dom v Sokolniki.

According to Radio Liberty, more than 100 air defense systems have been deployed around Moscow since 2023. In 2025, an additional 43 towers with Pantsir-S1 systems were installed near the capital. Potential sites for S-400 air defense systems have been identified in Moskvoretsky Park in the Kuntsevo district, next to the Medik stadium on Pavlova Street, and not far from the Moscow State University Innovation Science and Technology Center, which is overseen by the Innopraktika foundation of Katerina Tikhonova, the Russian president's youngest daughter . Additionally, air defense systems are being deployed to Putin's residence in Valdai in the Novgorod region, where 27 towers for Pantsir systems were erected by March 2026.
