Last week, Ukraine had dozens of combat drones already flying toward Russian military targets. Suddenly, all the video feeds broadcasting their flight became blurry. The drones lost contact with pilots on the ground via the Starshield system .

Many UAVs then simply fell out of the sky, and Ukrainian units lost weapons worth over 42 million hryvnias or over $1 million, according to The New York Times . One Ukrainian commander stated that these failures forced him to halt almost all operations for the next three days.

These include strikes on Russian command posts and fuel hubs. According to him, it is precisely these kinds of attacks that help save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines and slow the Russian advance. A week after the initial reports of problems, the Ukrainian military claims the situation has improved, but communication issues persist. Meanwhile, the Trump administration is issuing contradictory statements, sometimes denying any changes to Starshield's operation, sometimes claiming service has been restored.

Ukrainian officials fear that the Trump administration may have ordered these disruptions, allegedly to punish Ukraine for the strikes on Russian oil refineries and force Kyiv to capitulate in the war.

Ukraine also reported gaps in the exchange of American military intelligence and delays in the delivery of American interceptor missiles. However, American officials deny any such disruptions, according to media reports. European countries pay for Ukraine's access. This more advanced Starshield system isn't available to all Ukrainian military personnel, but many rely on it to launch drones. For more basic communications, they use the standard Starlink. Ukrainian officials report slowdowns in both Starshield and Starlink.

Elon Musk claimed that the Pentagon controls Starshield. But US Secretary of State Marco Rubio only added to the confusion by claiming that Musk's SpaceX is the one who determines access to Starlink and Starshield.

According to Ukrainian officials, due to initial limitations of Starshield, Ukrainian drones lost contact with the system at speeds as low as 65 kilometers per hour. While the connection has improved, drones still lose contact when they exceed 160 kilometers per hour.

Some models can operate normally below this speed – but others, including those used by Oleg's units – must fly faster to deliver strikes. Previously, Ukrainian drones using Starshield flew at speeds of up to 400 kilometers per hour with a stable connection. According to Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky, the official speed limit was already 160 kilometers per hour. But it was not enforced.

This leaves the US free to claim that no changes have occurred in the system. However, Ukrainian troops on the front lines are experiencing the changes firsthand, according to media reports.

Even if Ukraine can adapt—allowing its attack drones to operate under these restrictions—the interceptors that used Starshield to counter Russian jet-powered drones will still be limited. According to Biletsky, the only way to shoot down an incoming drone is to outrun it. And Russian jet weapons fly much faster than 160 kilometers per hour.

Reducing speed limits for air defense is "a painful decision that literally undermines the defense of our cities – first and foremost," Biletsky emphasized. "Therefore, when the Pentagon took this step, it was undoubtedly an unfriendly step towards the civilian population of Ukraine," he added.
