Ukrainian soldiers advanced more than 15 kilometers through underground communications lines behind Russian lines in the Kupyansk direction. During the operation, more than 30 occupiers were captured, and another hundred were neutralized.
According to the 2nd Corps of the National Guard "Charter," the military conducted an underground counteroffensive called "Veles," completely depriving the enemy of the ability to penetrate the rear of Ukrainian units.
The Ukrainian command anticipated the enemy forces' intentions early and seized the initiative on this section of the front. The group coordinated movement through underground tunnels with simultaneous assault operations on the surface and massive drone strikes.
"We observed the enemy operating underground and studied how they did it. The Russians intended to use gas pipelines to penetrate our rear. So we went underground ourselves," noted Brigadier General Igor Obolensky, commander of the Charter Corps. Thanks to advance preparation, the defenders were able to turn underground communications into a trap for enemy attack aircraft.
" We anticipated the enemy's actions and mastered the tactics of underground combat,
" Igor Obolensky explained. To carry out the tasks, the command involved fighters from the "Charter" brigade, the RUG assault regiment, and the "Lava" unmanned systems regiment.
Also participating in the offensive were units of the Main Intelligence Directorate, including the Freedom of Russia Legion and the RDC, as well as the Achilles unmanned systems brigade.
Incidentally, it's worth recalling other achievements of the Ukrainian military. According to the General Staff, on October 21, the SDUs eliminated 2,250 Russian occupiers. This is the largest number of enemy personnel losses in a single day since the start of the full-scale invasion.
Charter was established in 2022 as a volunteer territorial defense unit. In 2023, it became the 13th Operational Purpose Brigade of the National Guard. On April 15, 2025, the National Guard established the 2nd Corps "Charter" on the basis of the brigade. It was led by Igor Obolensky.
