In Lithuania, scientists, former diplomats, and other experts from the UK and across Europe modeled a scenario of a Russian attack on NATO through a "Kaliningrad crisis." Sky News , which received exclusive access to the simulation, reported this.

The exercise was organized by the Baltic Center for International Security and the Lithuanian University of Management and Economics ISM. Edward Lucas, a British journalist and Russia expert, founded the think tank and helped organize the simulation. The scenario begins with a rebellion breaking out in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, posing an unpleasant challenge for the Kremlin. A group of rebels takes the region's governor hostage and plans to transport tanks and troops across the border into neighboring Lithuania, a NATO member.

The rebels want Moscow to take an even tougher stance against its allies than it already does. Their goal is to start a fight against NATO, then force the rest of Russia to join them and provoke a wider war between Moscow and the West.

As Lucas noted, this scenario is deliberately contrasted with other possible options that involve Russian forces launching attacks on the alliance's eastern flank.

He said war games "that include scenarios in which NATO does nothing and stands by while Russian troops invade the Baltic states are all nonsense."

"The reality is that these countries see things we don't see. They hear things we don't hear. They understand things we don't understand. They do things we don't do. And they are super-vigilant and super-ready, and they will fight like crazy. They have allies here who are ready to fight from the first minute, and Vladimir Putin really knows this," he said.

Therefore, he urges a different perspective on the threat, focusing not so much on the military threat from Russia, but on the vulnerability of Kaliningrad. Lucas said the territory was once heavily militarized, but most of the weapons and troops were redirected to Russia's war in Ukraine, leaving the area much less secure.

"Lithuania and Poland are closely monitoring developments in the area, fearing that Russians living there might try to cross the border into the two NATO countries to avoid any Kremlin attempts to recruit more civilians to fight in Ukraine," Sky News writes.

Media reports have indicated that NATO is working on a strategy to deter any potential Russian invasion. However, in the event of a Russian attack, a scenario for achieving a quick victory is being developed .

According to The Guardian, a potential Russian attack could occur within a few months . The Kremlin's plans may also include an invasion of NATO countries bordering Russia.
