Video Summary
AI GeneratedSouthern California is bracing for a significant storm system bringing rain and flooding. Local news also covers coastal erosion efforts in Long Beach and Malibu, political tensions regarding LAPD leadership and midterm elections, a community-driven Black-owned food tour in LA, the Lakers' transition into a new era, and entertainment disputes over the film \"Michael.\"
Beautiful shot from our Mount Wilson cam
on this Wednesday, pastel skies.
You know what they say, red sky in the morning.
Sailors take warning, red sky at night, sailors delight.
That's right.
So here we go.
Those clouds are moving in, Maria.
That's right.
I thought you were going to say, speaking of sailors.
Well.
I do love that dress.
You were just talking about how it gave you some sailor vibes.
The little ruffles are kind of funny on it today.
But anyway.
it's like you look like you're a member
of a crew of like the USO kind of a
little bit right a little bit
of that vibe we digress like below decks what
really do you know that show below deck oh
my goodness that show it makes me
shake my head but it is fun
to watch good morning I am Rick Ovando we've got
storm watch here we are on deck
for watching some showers rolling in we're
watching the line of showers right now getting ready
to move into parts of Santa Barbara County
or at least parts of it have already moved
into the western portion of Santa Barbara
getting ready to impact the border of Ventura
and Santa Barbara it's going to take its time a
little bit before making its way over LA County
and the rest of SoCal and Orange County and the
Inland Empire but we are anticipating showers today
so before you head out that door make
sure you grab that umbrella a jacket a hat just
to be ready for this storm system first
significant storm of the season.
The center of this area of low pressure still offshore and it's
going to make its way towards us here today,
tonight into tomorrow. Temperatures right now
ranging from 63 in Ontario, 63 in Granada Hills,
62 Corona, 64 in Santa Ana to that 33 just above
freezing in Big Bear.
We'll get a little bit of snow I think but well above 8,000 feet in our
mountain locations. Around 58 there today, 71 in the high desert.
Just a 10% chance for some showers
out towards the Coachella Valley,
but that chance is there today. 72 for downtown LA,
so temperature is really taking a dive.
75 along the coast with those beach hazards and
hazardous conditions along our shores.
I'll go over the weather alerts that are going into place
as well as timing on this storm when I come back.
But first, let's go to Stu in Sky Fox,
get a look at our traffic conditions before
the real wet weather comes. Stu, good morning.
Hey, good morning, Maria.
I think we found a good freeway to talk about.
All the ones we've been seeing this morning, a lot of traffic.
This one, we've been moving along pretty well.
Made our way to the city of Orange.
55 is what we're looking at.
Taillights southbound, and it does look like a pretty decent drive.
But as you pass that 22,
a little bit of brake lights out there in the distance.
Northbound, though, the exact opposite.
It looks like it's moving very,
very well from here all the way out to the 91.
It looks like a fantastic drive indeed.
At 55 through Orange, southbound, give yourself extra time.
Northbound, you've got it made.
Sending backwards, always got it made.
Bob and Jen, good morning.
All right, Stu, thank you so much.
With possible rain and possible flooding on the way,
the city of Long Beach is taking precautions.
Yeah, we have Mario live in the Long Beach
Peninsula now with the latest there.
Good morning.
Yeah, that's right.
It's been dry so far this morning,
but we know a storm is on the way here to Southern California.
We'll update you on that.
In the meantime, we've been talking with some contractors
that are starting to arrive boarding up some
of the windows here at these homes near the boardwalk.
We're at the end of 64th place,
and they say they're preparing for next week.
We've got king tides towards the end of next week, and they're
boarding up more of the windows here to prevent more damage.
They don't want them to be blown out with
these powerful waves that we've seen.
And just down the way, down all this sand that they put in,
you can see they've got the heavy equipment, the front loader out.
They started working here about 20 minutes ago.
We've also been watching the coastline
because all this sand is meant to be a barrier.
We have high tide coming in at about 730.
It's only expected to be around four and a half feet,
but these waves are still pretty
powerful and at times they're coming up over this sand wall
and it looks like they might
be flooding some of the streets here down
a few blocks where a lot of those damaged
homes are.
So let's go to some of the work,
show you what we're talking about here and what they
did overnight during low tide.
We're talking about 415,000 cubic yards of sand,
enough to fill roughly 125 Olympic-sized swimming pools
and crews using a large pipe to pump sand from the seafloor
and deposit it back into the badly eroded shoreline.
So this is a nearly $12 million project.
They hope to get much of the work done by the end of November,
but it isn't scheduled
to be fully completed until February of next year.
And the goal is to rebuild this natural buffer between the ocean
and the homes here on the peninsula
from 62nd all the way to the jetty at 72nd place.
Some neighbors say this problem has been building
for years and they're understandably frustrated
that more wasn't done sooner. Some even paying
out of their own pockets for workers to help protect
the boardwalk and seawall like we're
seeing here this morning with those contractors arriving.
And the city coming back out here live
warning that this next storm could bring moderate rain,
possible thunderstorms, more beach erosion
and tidal overflow. And then we have a series of king tides coming up.
So we're keeping an eye on
this part of the coast in Long Beach on the peninsula.
Mario Ramirez will send it back to
you in the studio. I would imagine, Mario,
that crews have to kind of work around low tide, right,
when they're bringing the sand in.
Yeah, especially in vulnerable areas like this. They do have to
wait until the water levels are lower, but you can see,
you know, it's going to be high tide here at
730 and they're still working down the way with that heavy equipment.
We've been pretty impressed
at how close they are able to get to the water,
even working with the water splashing on their
equipment. So, you know, they're still able to do their job,
but yeah, the water levels definitely
help when they lower and how would you characterize all
of the work that they've done now compared to
what you've seen there in the past in terms
of the berms um some of the other the stuff that
they've put on there the other barriers yeah
a few weeks ago none of this was here so these waves
that we're seeing now crashing up against
the sand here they would be spilling over into the
boardwalk and we'd see 64th place flooded
by probably at this hour a lot of the residents
say, you know, this is a temporary solution.
They think that rocks should be placed. That's what I
was thinking too. Some of the sand here.
They've done that in other parts. Obviously the sand gets
washed away quickly. They think rocks might
be a more permanent fix, but they're looking for
long-term solutions because that's what they need out here.
Yeah, they do. I mean, there's only so
much sand you can truck in.
They need like the Army Corps of Engineers. It's going to take a lot
to try to figure out how to defend against mother nature.
All right, Mario, thank you. You know,
It's been relentless on so many parts of our coastline,
including Point Dume in Malibu.
Gigi Garcia is live there with more on the situation.
Gigi.
Well, they're not moving sand here like where Mario is.
What they're moving are boulders
and certainly very big boulders trying to shore up the road here,
part of which has already collapsed.
You can see right behind the yellow tape,
you sort of can't see anything.
And then to the left, you can see all those boulders.
And if photographer Brian Shaw keeps panning all the way to the left,
you can see the work has already begun today,
trying to get ahead of the rain, continuing to move those boulders.
That's why the excavator is here.
We're on Westward Beach Road, if you're familiar with the area.
This is right across the street from the iconic Sunset Restaurant.
It's been here since the 1970s,
but the building has actually been here for decades.
And this is where contractors have been working now trying
to shore up the street, which again, part of which has collapsed.
Now, take a look at this video
because the collapse exposed an underground water main
and forced the closure for a period of time of Westwood Beach Road.
It is open now.
The city of Malibu sharing the photo of the impacted pipe.
No cars were allowed as the crews were working
to get their heavy machinery in here.
And local water service was turned off,
but the Sunset Restaurant is open, we're told.
No word yet, though, when the work will be completed.
Now, the rain, as Samad has been telling you, and Maria Quibon, could
hit half an inch to an inch per hour at times, especially tonight.
That's enough to overwhelm storm drains and cause flooding,
and we could see creeks and small rivers rise quickly.
So, a reminder, if you live in a flood-prone area,
this is the time to get ready.
whether you're in Malibu or other points,
keep an eye on the updated forecast and be prepared to
act fast if flooding does occur.
And of course, never try to drive through flooded roads. Even
a small amount of moving water can be dangerous.
Bringing it back here live, the Sunset Restaurant,
the owner has gone on social media to make it
a point to tell folks he is open for business,
asking folks to come, have a drink,
grab something to eat with him, even though the repairs are
happening right across the street.
The road to Point Dune State Beach, though, is closed. No
word on when that will reopen.
And you are looking live at all the work being done, part of the road
again collapsing here, and they're trying to shore it up
with these boulders. Reporting live, I'm Gigi
Graciette. Back to you. Yeah, depending on how effective it is,
that might be the longer-term
solution. Seeing this up and down the coast, Gigi.
All right, thank you. Thank you. So we are less
than two weeks out from midterm elections
and there's a lot going on to say the least uh Aracely
is here to break all of this down for us
a lot going on so i have a lot to say yeah are you
ready for it deep breath right have some water
on standby uh yes it has been super busy both
candidates have been out
and about this week it is only wednesday they've done a lot making
themselves visible that's the key hoping really
to sway as many undecided voters as possible
which is why endorsements can be so powerful it's really
a time to watch who's endorsing who
the support from Rick Caruso could matter this is Caruso
and Bass at an event yesterday now despite
him running against Bass in 2022 these two looked like
and i say looked like friends Caruso did
praise Bass for quote cutting the red tape
and helping the palisades rebuild faster but he stopped
short of actually endorsing her.
Now, you may remember that Caruso
received substantial support from
voters back in 2022, who were
really concerned about homelessness
and public safety.
Can an endorsement from him
give the candidate access
to his support, donor network,
political relationships?
Yes, it would be important.
Although yesterday's meeting, again,
was not an endorsement,
it may reflect a discussion about
the city's challenges.
Rather than an agreement on
the election. So we are really going to watch
to see if Rick Caruso will stay on the sidelines
or if he decides to weigh in on the race. Optics are everything.
Optics are everything. You can read into it whatever you wish. Now,
Nithya Raman was busy yesterday as well.
She picked up a pretty big endorsement.
We told you this yesterday as news broke
that L.A. County Supervisor Lindsay Horvath threw
her support behind her.
Horvath is the only member of the five-person board of supervisors
backing Raman, the other four support Mayor Bass.
Geographically, this is significant
because Horvath represents a district
covering large portions of the West Side and the San Fernando Valley,
potentially giving Raman an opening
to connect with voters in these areas,
specifically, of course, those undecided voters.
Also, this is a direct challenge to Bass's record because Horvath has
criticized Bass over the Palisades fire's response,
homelessness, and other city issues.
and that we've talked about as time has gone on.
This endorsement really reflects the strained relationship
between the mayor and county leaders.
Let me catch my breath now.
You know, so we just talked about the support they're getting,
but let's talk about some of the criticism here, right?
Because this week, the California Post had this exclusive interview
with the former LAPD chief, Bill Bratton.
He had a lot to say about the prospect
of Chief Jim McDonald getting ousted.
Right, so this is actually important
because public safety is becoming a really big flashpoint.
And in this exclusive that you mentioned, Jen,
in the California Post, former LAPD Chief
Bill Bratton essentially is asking this question,
why would you take one of the most seasoned
police professionals in America and replace him?
So he told the California Post quote,
I can almost predict with certainty that you will
see a potential mass exodus from the LAPD
with that type of political posturing and
political drama. Bratton goes on to claim that Raman's plan would
worsen the already existing staffing challenge.
Now, of course, this is his assessment. This is
not a confirmed outcome,
but it does add this other dimension to the debate over political
leadership, staffing, preparations for the 2028 Olympics.
The city of Los Angeles is all about
what's going to come in two years.
Mayor Bass appointed McDonald back in 2024 and supports
keeping him in place. Raman says the chief,
though, has lost public trust, particularly
over LAPD's response to federal immigration enforcement operations.
Now, why does all of
this matter now? Again, as I mentioned, public safety is a huge issue.
It's a defining issue
in this runoff. And a debate over
the police chief really gives voters a concrete example of
how these candidates differ i think sometimes
when you're talking about vaguely you know this would
be done differently that would be done differently
but this is such a concrete example of you know
if you support mayor bass that means keeping chief mcdonald right
if you want change if you don't
like how things are going then your vote
for Raman would mean she would like to replace the police
the timeline on that is coming into question
though because she has said by 2030 but regardless
she has she has said pretty solidly that she wants
to see him go yes and Rick Caruso yesterday
also criticized Nithya Raman for those comments
on uh chief mcdonnell as well um again interesting
that he did not fully support or endorse the mayor
but then criticized Nithya Raman for that
and of course they're all trying to court
that vote that were the spencer pratt voters that
could be sitting on the sidelines deciding should we should we even go
to the polls and vote for
someone we they're trying to move that chunk
of voters right that's significant that's a
significant chunk um all right
so that's that for this hour next hour we're going to get into
mayor bass's plan to help with your skyrocketing utility bills
this one's a huge topic as well um
no surprise the whole thing obviously has turned political
so more to come on that in the eight
o'clock hour all right all right
so a lot of meat in the bone there roxia what's going on thank you
President Trump back on the campaign trail today,
traveling to South Carolina.
This is all part of a final push for the midterms, where
Republicans hope his presence will help stave off Democratic gains.
Doug Luzader has more this morning from Washington.
Good morning.
Good morning, guys.
The president indicated that he was going to do a lot
of traveling for these midterm elections, and that is true.
He is all over the place, and this is a pretty aggressive schedule
that's going to continue
through an election day that the president thinks is going to go well.
November 3rd is the big day,
and I look so forward to that evening of election.
I just think we're going to do great.
I just feel it.
President Trump in North Carolina hoping
to keep Republican control of the Senate,
and his strategy goes beyond personal appearances.
He posted on Truth Social,
I have spent or will be spending over $400 million by Election Day.
More than $300 million has already been spent.
It can make a difference.
Republicans are significantly outspending Democrats
in some of these key Senate races in particular.
But money isn't everything.
Not everything.
And Democrats are counting on historical trends,
the president's low approval numbers,
and what they hope will be heavy hitters out on the campaign trail.
The question is not how many people are going to be able to move here.
The question is whether the people
who already live here can stay here and have a good life.
Former President Bill Clinton was in Florida yesterday
stumping for Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Jolly.
And former President Barack Obama will also be campaigning,
especially in the critical Michigan Senate race.
The president, meantime, was asked to look ahead to 2028
and said he hasn't spoken
to Vice President J.D. Vance about a possible endorsement.
Who would believe that?
I don't talk about it with him. He doesn't talk
It's early.
We are very early right now.
We have to get through the midterms.
We'll see how it goes.
Before we get to 2028, you've got to get through 2026.
Look, you know, the polls
are pretty daunting right now for Republicans.
It's, you know, I know it's cliche.
It all depends on what turnout looks like come election day.
There's a lot of early voting out there.
And, you know, these trends have certainly changed.
We see more and more early voting with each election.
Generally, turnout for midterms, not the same as a presidential.
right election year but but you know there
is particularly among Democrats a lot of enthusiasm
out there yeah our local registrar here
was just here yesterday our LA County Clerk and he says
that he does believe that there's going
to be a very large turnout and it's what they're seeing
here uh at the registrar's office here
as uh people are turning out all right Doug Lazaro

to you Maria, it's a Vegas weekend
yeah sounds fun sounds
so much fun right now we're taking a live look outside from uh well
where is this Long Beach? yes this is Long Beach
this is the shot from SkyFox, we want to say thanks
to our crew up there, Stu and the crew.
As we look at some clouds there in the distance,
it's still pretty dry here in Long Beach,
but not for too much longer.
We are watching this area of low pressure,
and as we watch the outlook,
this low-pressure system will slowly make its way inland this morning
and then quickly be out of here by late tomorrow into Friday.
We're talking about some good downpours, potentially.
Some thunderstorms are in the forecast,
the possibility of that, so that could mean some flooding.
so we do have flood watches
and beach hazards as well we have three quarters of an inch to two
inches of rain possible for the coast
and valleys through late tomorrow one and a half to three
inches possible for the mountains
and foothills that low will be out of here quickly on uh Thursday
night and it looks like we will see perhaps
some lingering moisture early Friday morning
otherwise we're going to dry things out most of Friday Saturday
and Sunday the weekend look
really nice for your outdoor plans otherwise we
do have that beach hazard statement still in place
from Ventura coastline all the way down
to Long Beach three to six foot sets plus
maybe occasionally seven foot sets
but that coupled with the winds from the storm system
you're still going to get a lot more of that beach erosion
and some light coastal flooding
we have the flood watches in effect including
the Santa Monica Santa Monica Mountains uh so
please be mindful of that if you're
in the Palisades area the recently burned
areas will be impacted by some
of that heavier rainfall we're expecting temperatures today
noticeably cooler 71 in Inglewood 89 in Indio 67
in Bakersfield 66 in Fresno you know in the
forecast over the next 24 to 48 hours today tomorrow there's
also a chance for some water
spouts and the possibility of a weak tornado
so i just want to put that all out there that
all the dynamics in place for that possibility
Thousand Oaks we're going to start to see those
showers by 9 10 a.m and it's going to continue through
this evening all right i'll show you the
rest of the forecast in just a few
moments but first let's go up to Stu
Stu, thank you for that shot of Long Beach.
I know you're watching the traffic,
but I'm sure also keeping an eye out for those raindrops.
Good morning.
Well, sorry
about that.
Sorry about that.
It works better when the mic is on.
Maria, I totally agree.
We are looking out for those raindrops.
It's one of those days where you're just like, is it going to rain?
But I believe you.
I definitely believe you.
This traffic is brought to us by MyHomeSold.
Take a look at the 405 drive.
Long Beach is where we are, and it is moving.
That's the best I can say, north or southbound on that 405 drive today.
It is moving, so I'm going to call it an okay drive.
Between the 710 and the 605, just give yourself a little extra time.
Hot spots? Yeah, let's go check those out.

really fun story here the story
of a local woman bringing people together while highlighting black
owned restaurants in a creative fun way i love it Brooke
is here to take us on Daisy's Black LA food
tour good morning yes get ready okay it started simply
because Daisy wanted to help out struggling
black owned businesses in her community
but she wanted to do it in a way where everyone benefits
sometimes it's a walking tour this time it's
a party bus she does all the planning you just have
to show up hungry. Locals are discovering hidden gems
and tourists are discovering hidden
communities. Since starting,
we have supported over 120 restaurants in Los Angeles County.
40 smiling people piled onto two party buses
for four hours of fun and food.
Having eaten all day, didn't eat late last night.
We're going to enjoy the day and the festivities.
Miss Janetta came hungry for a good reason.
Today we have our signature Creole crawfish and crab
Spinach artichoke dip.
It'll be peach cobbler, OG banana pudding,
Oreo brownie fudge, strawberry shortcake.
Some liquor infused grapes with tequila and tahini
to have a little tangy taste.
There were also Philly cheesesteaks and chicken burgers,
and that was just the beginning.
It tastes like a chicken sausage sandwich.
Really moist.
I can taste the pickle, the tomato, the onion.
Very, very flavorful.
Which I feel like it's sometimes difficult
to do with ground chicken.
They nailed it. After that description I felt like I had
to taste it you know just to double check
his accuracy it's journalism
so i'm just gonna just see you know just i'm just gonna taste it
for the assignment so i ate
and then i ate again and again and you get it
other predominantly black areas like Detroit
and DC yeah
so i wanted to make sure to support black
owned businesses here in L.A. as well.
And the restaurants really appreciate that support.
Fred's Down Home Burgers has been in the community for 30 years,
and many people on the tour had never been.
We're most popular for our ground beef burgers, turkey burgers,
which are the best over here on this side of town.
A lot of the businesses that she highlights,
like although I'm an L.A. native,
I've never been to or heard of,
so I felt it was a perfect way to experience it.
It is wonderful. It's a whole lot of fun.
It's a great experience.
All right.
What is it?
What?
Big goals.
Like, you wanted to showcase these restaurants,
but did you actually think it was going to
be this big this quickly?
No, not at all.
Not at all.
I was begging people to come to my first tour.
I'm telling my family and friends, like, just come fill the seats.
And at that time, I only needed 20 seats sold,
and the tickets were $50.
Right now, my largest tour was 80 people, and we go up to $150.
Trivia.
community resources games prizes
and nearly 10 small restaurants so you'll
definitely leave full but after all of that believe it
or not the people just
might be the best part to be able
to highlight the restaurants to bring the
audience to these places that they
wouldn't typically go to it if you don't
see on DoorDash or when you're driving
by you don't even know that they're
there that's what I love most wait can I see
if it works when I do it or if it
just daisy has the magic let me just see
that's a party bus that's
a party bus i tell you i had
so much fun daisy's goal is to get
in every major metropolitan city in the u.s just get outside the
u.s she wants to do it all she wants
to have multiple tours running at the same time if you
are interested in getting tickets
for daisy's next tour you can find them on her instagram
it's the same name as the tour it's daisy's black
la food tour oh my god so she posts
great idea. It's such a great idea, right? Yeah.
It's like a wine tour. It's kind of like a wine
tour that you see on the party buses.
They've got a little liquor back there. I was like,
guys, I'm working. I'll take shots of water if it lands on me.
But everybody else, they were
having fun. I know everything was great,
but what was your favorite highlight? You know what? I
loved the chicken burger. And, you know, I think it was twofold.
So one, it was absolutely delicious.
and then also it was a small you know family-owned restaurant
that i had never heard of it was kind
of like a fried chicken and marketplace
and then they also had like a ground chicken burger
but it was the food was fantastic
and i had never heard of it i called my cousin he had never heard
of it and so i think i loved finding out about you know like yeah
this restaurant that had been
there yeah i would have i would love
to say you probably passed by right that you would never
things to go in affordable prices you know i mean if i want to go back
and take friends and so i i
loved that i loved learning new things yeah
and then she takes you to some of the places that you
already know too like you got
your fixings they headed there after i got off the bus
what a great way to get to know your neighborhood i know
and just get to know neighborhoods that
aren't yours there were so many people on the bus
who are not black who don't live in black la do
you know what i mean and just wanted
to experience good people a good time and good food i want to
hang out with them. Yeah, no, we should take the tour.
Yeah, definitely. I don't know if Bob can hang out
for four hours, though. Four hours. Ten restaurants
in four hours? We can handle it.
I'll take the model.
Coming to you a little late here.
737, 738. I'm early.
Don't draw attention to it, Bob.
Yeah, I'm a little early. Someone's doing a lot of talking.
That's why we're late. Well, it's not me.
Well, who are you talking about?
Who are you talking about me?
Usually when Bob points something out,
usually when he points something out
that's happening, that's wrong, it's usually
you know it's it's it's called projecting yeah there's
a word for it right yeah projecting
um all right good morning to you i'm meteorologist maria cuovan how
are you on this Wednesday I hope
you've got your umbrella you found your jacket the hat
because we are anticipating some showers
to be falling today but not right now right now we're taking
a live look behind the Hollywood
sign here with that camera looking down at the lake Lake Hollywood
and some birds flying by
beautiful but not for long as far as the dry conditions
this is an area of low pressure that
we have been watching for the last several days it
is bringing some showers already to parts of
Point Conception, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara County I'm watching
this line of shower activity
you can see how we're picking up some
of the lightning up there to our north near Solvang
there's this line of showers going to move over Oxnard
and Ventura County in about
123 minutes so how many what's what's that a couple hours from now
so we still have a couple of hours
two to three hours before it makes its way south
into parts of LA County and then the rest of
Orange County by this afternoon
so i do think your early morning commute this morning will be fine
it will be dry but by the latter part
of this morning into the afternoon we'll start with
Ventura moves its way south into the rest of LA County
as well as Orange County, the Inland Empire
for your afternoon and evening commute
in the meantime today temperatures noticeably cooler
77 in Ontario, 72 in
Woodland Hills, 74 in Santa Ana, to that 58
in Big Bear. All right, I'll send it back
to you guys. All right, Maria,
thank you. So the post-LeBron era
begins tonight for the Los
Angeles Lakers. Purple and Gold begin
their season tonight, hosting the Golden
State Warriors. Here we go with more on what we
can expect from the team this year.
Let's bring in Beto Duran
from ESPN 710
Radio. Thanks for being with us this morning.
You got a friend there as well?
Yeah, Courtney, second season as part of the Laker girls,
fantastic, honor to be here.
Thanks for being with us, great to see you both.
So okay, we saw LeBron last night with his new team.
This is officially starting a new era for the Lakers.
What can we expect?
With LeBron, it's his own ecosystem
and LeBron James may not be on the team, but
we're still talking about him.
That's why he's one of the best to ever play.
But it's now Luka Doncic's time,
it's the Luka era and this offseason Luka took the
the team, but his country of Slovenia,
they spent almost two weeks together, working out
together, eating together, enjoying each other's
company, get to know what they're going to
be like in the post LeBron era.
And Lakers have a new addition that Walker Kessler,
who's seven foot one, 24 year old
who they traded for from Utah.
So it's a new time, Austin Reeves has a big contract,
so he has to live up to that.
So Laker fans, let's just say this,
they either love or hate LeBron James, a lot of them,
they appreciated LeBron for bringing a championship,
but they weren't exactly crying when he left.
But it's Luka Doncic's time now.
It is.
All right, so in your estimation,
what would constitute a successful season for the Lakers?
Anything short of the Western Conference Finals,
for example, a disappointment there?
I think Courtney would agree with me here
that if the Lakers don't contend for a title,
it's a failure of a season.
But let's be realistic, they're a middle of the pack team right now.
They are Oklahoma City and San Antonio are the elite in the NBA.
And the Lakers, I think, can contend
to be in the Western Conference Final, but it's
gonna be really tough.
If you're speaking realistically,
but then we also have the crazy optimistic fans.
Right, Courtney?
They're going to win no matter what, right?
Absolutely.
That's the side that I'm on.
She's on the, we're going to win every game.
I'm in the, let's be realistic.
And it'll be about the 5-6 seed, somewhere around there.
But Vegas has the over-under on their wins
for the season at 45 and a half.
So I think that's realistic for them.
All right.
So the season opener tonight, Courtney,
how excited are you for the season opener?
What can fans expect there, watching the game, and also at home?
It is so surreal to be here for my second season,
and I'm just so excited to get back on the court tonight
and just show all the fans all
the hard work we've been putting into the season
and just excited to showcase our new talent and get everybody involved,
everybody at the top, at the bottom,
same amount of energy given to every single fan in this arena.
When do you start all your preparations?
for the, does it start at the end of last season,
all your new routines and things you're going to
be doing for the new season?
Yeah, so the off season is very short. We do bridge the gap pretty
quickly. It turns over and we re-audition for our next season.
So we started our rehearsals
back in August, preparing for tonight. Wow.
Also, where can I get that jacket? Because it's cute.
Right? Thank you. It's brand new, our brand new purple uniforms.
My gosh, yeah, nice and fresh.
Brand new, and look, she won't say this,
but Laker girls have to audition every single
season.
Just because we're on last year doesn't mean that they're automatically
on the team again.
And they get here to the arena about three o'clock for rehearsal,
for practice, so they're
putting in long hours.
Whoa, that's dedication.
So from the game perspective, Beta,
what can we expect tonight for the Lakers against
the Golden State Warriors?
The Lakers in preseason, we didn't see much of them
because Walker Kessler was out
the injury and then JJ Redick, the head coach,
doesn't really put much stock into finding the
players in the preseason. But you're going to see
a team that is younger. They only have one player
that's Kevon Looney, who's 30 years old.
Everybody else is in their 20s. Look for them to run more
and look for them to include Walker Kessler,
the big man, more in the offense. So it's going to be
a team that looks a little bit more freer
and it's going to be a team that's going to be more fluid.
What would you say is the biggest question mark going into this season?
The biggest question mark is how is Walker
Kessler going to fit in with them? Because
He is 7'1", but he's going to play defense around the rim.
The Lakers also have a lack of depth.
So when Kessler's not on the floor, they get smaller.
And the depth is there to an extent,
but not exactly like guys that you're saying,
oh, wow, there's a big drop-off.
No, you need to come out here and be consistent the entire time.
So that's one of the things that JJ Redick, the head coach, even says.
Our starting lineup is going to be fluid.
So just
because they start today doesn't mean they're going to start tomorrow.
And that's a question mark.
The best part of the news is everyone's starting with a fresh slate.
Anything can happen, and we're hoping
for a really successful run this season.
Absolutely.
Right, Courtney?
Get 82 wins, right?
Absolutely.
All right.
Keep the energy up.
It's going to be a long day for you both.
Game time is 7 p.m. tonight, so it's going to be a long day.
But I know we are super charged and energetic and excited for it.
Thank you both.
Thank you.
Go Lakers.
Thank you.
Thank you.
That jacket is so cute.
Right?
Yeah.
I want one, too.
I like the crop jacket.
Yeah, I love a crop jacket.
it. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning.
Good morning to you. Let's jump into some
entertainment from sports to entertainment sponsored
by Yaamaba Resort and Casino. Nobody
puts baby in a corner. Okay, you ready to catch me, Bob?
We could try. I'm not making any promises.
Let's not do it live, okay? Hopefully not.
But we are excited and we're dancing for this news
because a Dirty Dancing sequel is in the works.
You're wild. In production. And according to
producers it's going to honor the late great Patrick Swayze
but it will not bring him back
using AI I am okay okay they're just gonna show
the old footage they're gonna well they're gonna
honor him and you know what maybe they maybe they will
do some flashback memories yeah we're not
gonna we're not gonna hologram him in no all right
no we're not gonna do that to Patrick we're not
not our Patrick not on our watch no it uh will
though bring back Jennifer Grey baby yes you know
So the original 1987 film starred the both of them.
Swayze is Johnny Castle opposite Jennifer Grey.
Frances Baby Houseman.
She will reprise her role in the upcoming sequel.
She'll also help write the sequel.
So she's going to be very hands-on with this project.
And as many of you know, Patrick Swayze died in 2009 at a young age,
age 57 years old due to pancreatic cancer.
Yeah, it's almost been 20 years ago.
yeah but he lives on yes he does
and i've interviewed jennifer gray before one of the
coolest people out there absolutely
and she's still got it man oh yeah still got it never lost
yeah i mean i just to this day i love
when people get it when i go you're wild you're wild
would you get it if i said that i got the baby in the corner
when they're in the car together
They're in the winds in her hair.
You're wild.
You're wild.
So, you know, we're wildly in awards season right now.
It is officially awards season.
And, you know, every year we keep thinking, you know,
they're going to keep us on the edge of our seats.
Or this is a year like we haven't seen before.
Guys, I need you to buckle up for a second.
Because we've already gotten into some drama.
Oh.
Literally.
I saw this.
Yeah.
The film Michael's Golden Globe submission
as musical comedy was denied.
Huh?
Just have all these songs in my head.
Just got to get them out.
Okay, I need you to stay with me on this journey.
Are you ready?
Yeah.
The decision for this denial means
that Jafar Jackson would now have to compete as best drama actor.
And that competition, as you know, is very tough.
According to Gold Derby, the film's musical comedy submission
was rejected by the awards committee
because the committee felt the film didn't meet
the rules criteria stipulating that, quote,
a musical can be a comedy
or a drama in which songs are used in addition to spoken dialogue
to further the plot they're basically saying
this is a drama with music instead of this is a musical
okay so so basically the dialogue isn't isn't
also in musical form is that what they're saying
they're basically saying this the film michael
at its core is a drama with musical elements
as opposed to it being a musical
with some dramatic it's not wrapped around right the
musical element right exactly
and and they said it's certainly not a comedy uh according to sources
the members felt that the musical performances
and michael did not meet the criteria of driving
the narrative okay now lion's gate
which is the studio behind michael is debating whether they're
going to appeal this decision they only have 10 days
because the submission deadline is october
31st on halloween next saturday
but if an appeal does go forward it would be evaluated by the
awards committee Obsession and Tender Loving Care
though have already been submitted and been
accepted as comedies i want to repeat myself Obsession
as a comedy Obsession has been accepted
i could see as a comedy for the globes there
are comedic elements to it, elements yeah that is
primarily a horror genre if i ever yeah i mean
this is this is that did Jafar Jackson sing the
song sing or he was lip syncing the song
no he he added his voice it's the way he explained it
is that he was singing but that it was they used
the technology to kind of infuse the voices
together it's tough because i could see like a La La Land
or you know Dreamgirls those are
obviously musical Walk the Line right there right
and they're singing their own music um where
i think they have a good shot at an appeal i don't know
though because i think that they stand
10 toes down on that decision for it and they
and they have the the data to back it up well
that leads us to our poll question of the day what's
the next music biopic you're ready for
are you ready for the Material Girls movie Madonna
are you ready for another one Britney
little toxic uh Cher would you like to see
a Cher biopic interesting Snoop Dogg which we know
is happening and the Beatles, which is coming
out. It's also happening. Yeah, that's also happening.
No love for the Beatles so far, though.
Go to foxla.com slash
vote. It looks like Britney
Blank is in the lead. Fascinating.
Fascinating person. Fascinating
story. This all goes against what you're
saying, having a biopic while people are
still alive. The issue
you run into when the subject at
hand is alive is that they have a lot of control
and a lot of say, i.e. Madonna.
It got shelved. It got pushed.
I would like to see this Britney, though,
because Jon M. Chu would be behind it, who gave us Wicked.
And I would, I'm just going to throw it out there again,
I would like to see Olivia Holt cast as Britney Spears.
We'll have to see.
All right, Stu, over to you.
Hey, good morning, everybody.
This is Traffic Report brought to us by
Jacobi and Myers, injury lawyers.
Is it Sadie Hawkins Day?
What is going on on the freeways?
That, my friends, is going to be the eastbound,
yes, I said it, eastbound 10 freeway.
Usually opened up, moving along very well.
Double-check, make sure there's no crashes.
Lot of traffic this morning.
Check that out.
Give yourself extra time on that eastbound ride on the 10 today,
coming away from the 405 over to the 110.
Now I'm going to show you the westbound.
Usually you're on your brakes by this point already
because we're past the 110 freeway.
Yes, it does get into that slow
and go mired up stuff all the way out to the 405,
but that doesn't happen until almost Crenshaw.
What is going on on the 10?
Give yourself extra time on those eastbound lanes.
Westbound, I think you're going to be happy with your drive.
Let's take a look at some traffic hotspots.
If you've been injured in an accident,
