A local woman bringing people together
and highlighting black-owned restaurants in
a creative and fun way.
Yeah, it started during Black History Month
last year, and Brooke is here to take
us on the Daisy Black LA Food Tour.
Hi there.
Hey there.
Yes, it started simply because Daisy wanted
to help out struggling black-owned businesses
in her community, but she wanted to do it
in a way where everyone benefits, so you get
to eat too.
Sometimes it's a walking tour.
This time, it was a party bus.
She does all the planning,
you just have to show up hungry.
Locals are discovering hidden gems
and tourists are discovering hidden communities.
Since starting, we have supported over 120 restaurants
in Los Angeles County.
40 smiling people piled onto two party buses
for four hours of fun and food.
I haven't eaten all day, didn't eat late last night,
we're going to enjoy the day and
the festivities.
Miss Janetta came hungry for a good reason.
Today we have our signature Creole crawfish
and crab spinach artichoke dip.
It'll be peach cobbler, OG banana pudding,
Oreo brownie fudge, strawberry shortcake.
Some liquor infused grapes with tequila
and tahini to have a little tangy taste.
There were also Philly cheesesteaks and chicken burgers,
and that was just the beginning.
It tastes like a chicken sausage sandwich, really moist.
I can taste the pickle, the tomato, the onion, very, very flavorful.
Which I feel like it's sometimes difficult to do with ground chicken.
They nail it.
After that description, I felt like I had to taste it.
You know, just to double check his accuracy.
It's journalism, so I'm just gonna taste it for the assignment.
So I ate, and then I ate again, and again, and you, you get it.
Thank you, it's
a good time out here.
Other predominantly black areas like Detroit and DC.
So I wanted to make sure
to support Black-owned businesses here in L.A. as well.
And the restaurants really appreciate that support.
Fred's Down Home Burgers has been in the community for 30 years.
And many people on the tour had never been.
We're most popular for our ground beef burgers, turkey burgers,
which are the best over here on this side of town.
A lot of the businesses that she highlights,
like although I'm an L.A. native, I've never been to or heard of.
So I felt it was a perfect way to experience it.
It is wonderful. It's a whole lot of fun. It's a great experience.
All right. What is it? What?
You wanted to showcase these restaurants,
but did you actually think it was going to be this big this quickly?
No, not at all. Not at all.
I was begging people to come to my first tour.
I'm telling my family and friends, like, just come fill the seats.
And at that time, I only needed 20 seats sold,
and the tickets were $50.
Right now, my largest tour was 80 people, and we go up to $150.
Trivia, community resources, games,
prizes, and nearly 10 small restaurants.
So you'll definitely leave full.
But after all of that, believe it or not,
the people just might be the best part.
To be able to highlight the restaurants, to bring the audience
to these places that they wouldn't typically go to,
that you don't see on DoorDash, or when you're driving by,
you don't even know that they're there.
That's what I love most.
Wait, can I see if it works when I do it
or if it just Daisy has the magic?
Let me just see.
Black LA.
That's the trick as to how Daisy gets your attention
to tell you about something else coming up.
She says Black LA and everybody else food tour.
So I was like, ooh, will they listen to me?
Daisy has a goal of getting
in every major metropolitan city in the U.S.
She wants to go outside the U.S.
She wants to have multiple tours running at the same time.
She's got big goals, and I feel like she can do it.
you can find links for tickets to Daisy's next tour
on her Instagram at Daisy's Black LA Food
tour I like her energy I love her energy yeah we asked you
so many questions I know let's do it
again okay so how much about 140 I believe
with fees on like the ticket platform that she uses
and about eight to ten restaurants and four hours of fun yes
and they play drinking games on the bus
Is there a BYOB on the bus?
No.
Oh, it's included.
It comes with that.
That's a great deal.
There was a little old lady who asked me
if I knew how to open a bottle of tequila.
And I was like, no, I'm not drinking,
auntie, but I know my way around the bottle.
I'm an expert.
You don't eat that much, though.
Do they give you smaller portions?
Yes, they do.
So you saw the little bits of the Philly cheesesteak
and the chicken burger.
That was so big.
It was so big.
It was.
The chicken burger, you get a quarter of a burger.
But it was still like two or three bites.
I was full, but the problem is that everything tastes
so good that you're just dying to try
at least a bite of everything
and kind of put another restaurant on your list.
So how much time do you spend at each restaurant?
Oh, it just depends.
So it depends, yeah.
Because there was one restaurant,
they weren't quite ready yet, but they had music going.
She brought out drinks.
She brought out the Kool-Aid.
And the bus will wait for you.
Oh, the bus waits as part of the tour.
Oh, wow.
Everybody's friendly.
If you do it once and then you want to do it again,
it'll be a whole new set of places.
It'll be a whole new set.
There was a lady on the bus, the tequila lady, 17 times.
This was her 17th tour.
And when I tell you she came prepared,
she has one of those, you know, like the delivery
people have the ice bags,
like she had one for her leftovers because one of them, it
was ice cream.
You saw the lady giving out the flavors.
And so it was this little, and you know,
we took a couple of huge bites, but she took
a bite, close hers up and put it in there.
You don't want to waste any of it. The food is good.
Yeah. I get it. My favorite
part is just learning about these
neighborhood restaurants. Like you heard
her, they've been there for 30 years and
I had never heard of them and the food is good.
You know, it's just something to put on your list
and go back to. This is fun.
I like this one. We should go.
We should ask Stacey to put together
a GDLA food tour.
Only when the weather's good though, right?
Well, I mean, you know,
you can still go in and out.
Yeah, of the bus.
