Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmat Hajiyev has shared a post about Counterpoint, a documentary exploring the two-century history of coexistence between Germans and Azerbaijanis. Hajiyev shared the post on the social media platform X.
The post notes that the story began with the resettlement to Azerbaijan of Swabian families from the territory of present-day Baden-Württemberg, a federal state in Germany.
"The documentary explores how German settlers and local Azerbaijanis built prosperous communities while preserving their religions, languages and traditions.
Through descendants, historians and diplomats, the film examines what remains of that legacy today and how cultural memory has survived," the post reads.
Counterpoint is a documentary produced by AnewZ that explores more than two centuries of shared history and coexistence between Germans and Azerbaijanis. The story begins two centuries ago with the arrival of Swabian families who migrated from Baden-Württemberg, Germany, to the region, including settling in Ganja. German settlers and local Azerbaijanis built prosperous communities while maintaining their unique languages, faiths, and traditions. The documentary highlights how German families integrated into local life—such as the Siemens brothers acquiring the Gedebey copper mine in 1864 and contributing to modern urban planning and street layouts in Baku. The film features historians, diplomats, and descendants to examine the surviving cultural memory and legacy of German heritage in Azerbaijan today. The documentary premiered recently in Berlin and has drawn public attention, including acknowledgment from Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan Hikmat Hajiyev.
