Severe flooding has swept across Ukraine’s Russian occupied Crimea peninsula in the northern Black Sea. Heavy rain and storm-force winds have battered the region for a third consecutive day since the weekend, flooding coastal areas and damaging infrastructure. In Yalta, a resort city on Crimea’s southern coast along the Black Sea, floodwaters have submerged parts of the waterfront, while retaining walls are being eroded by the relentless downpours. Waves reaching heights of up to five metres have battered the coastline, raising concerns for residents and tourists. The situation is particularly serious in Koreiz, a coastal settlement near Yalta, where heavy rainfall has caused rivers to burst their banks, sending torrents of water rushing through streets and residential areas. According to the regional emergency services department, responders have installed protective barriers in residential neighbourhoods and prepared evacuation routes in case water levels continue to rise. Emergency crews are concentrating their efforts on two streets in Koreiz. On Rodnikovaya Street, floodwater has entered a residential area and spread across private properties and adjoining plots. Meanwhile, the force of the water has destroyed a retaining wall on Tokmakovykh Street. Rescuers are building temporary dams, clearing storm drains and laying sandbags to protect residential buildings. A safety checkpoint has also been established in the threatened area. Other parts of Crimea have also been affected by the severe weather. Alushta, Sudak, Feodosia and the Bakhchisaray district have reported fallen trees and disruptions to electricity and water supplies. With powerful waves reaching four to five metres along the coast, authorities have urged residents and holidaymakers to stay away from waterfront promenades, particularly after dark.
A total of 12 weather-related incidents have been recorded across five municipalities in Crimea, involving fallen trees, damaged lighting poles and power outages. Emergency crews continue to work to repair the damage, while a regional emergency response headquarters coordinates the ongoing response.
