The former police officer convicted of killing
an innocent man in his apartment is set to be
released from prison today.
Amber Geiger served seven of her 10 years in prison for the murder
of Botham Jean. She made parole earlier this month.
Fox 4's Alex Boye live outside Dallas
Police Headquarters with a look at that case.
Alex. Hey guys, good morning. You know, later
today, former Dallas police officer Amber Geiger will be a free woman.
You know, her deadly
encounter with Botham Jean happened just two blocks
from where I'm standing at the apartment
complex where they both lived.
Now, I want you to take a look right now at live pictures that we
have from one of our photographers
who is there set up outside of the entrance to the prison
in Gatesville, which is about an hour outside of Waco.
You can see all quiet there at the moment.
This is where Amber Geiger has been serving her murder sentence.
Now, Geiger was convicted and
sentenced in the 2018 killing of her upstairs neighbor, Botham Jean.
She accidentally entered
his apartment instead of her own after a long shift,
Geiger thought that Jean was an intruder
and shot him. This high-profile case garnered international attention.
Jean was from a small
island of St. Lucia, and his family often traveled
to Dallas over the years to advocate on their son's
behalf. Geiger was granted early release after serving
a seven-of-her-ten-year prison sentence.
She will be assigned a parole officer and receive
the specific conditions of her parole following her release today.
And I can tell you that my colleague Lori Brown is also en route to the
prison and will be covering this story all day long for Fox 4 News.
You, of course, can continue to follow the latest developments
on her release, Amber Geiger's release, both on air and online.
For now, reporting live at DPD
headquarters, I'm Alex Boye for Good Day.
