The former police officer convicted
for killing an innocent man in his apartment
is set to be released from prison today.
Amber Geiger served seven of her 10 years in prison
for the murder of Botham Jean.
She made parole earlier this month. Alex Boyer is live for us
outside of Dallas Police Headquarters with the very latest.
Alex. Hey guys, good morning. And
I can tell you that former Dallas Police Officer Amber Geiger,
as we now know, will be a free
woman later today. You know,
her deadly encounter with Botham Jean happened just two blocks
from where I'm standing at an apartment complex where they both lived.
Now, Geiger was convicted
and sentenced in 2018 for the killing of her upstairs neighbor,
Botham Jean. She accidentally
entered his apartment instead of her own after a long shift.
Geiger thought that Jean was an
intruder and shot him.
This high-profile case garnered international attention over the years.
Jean was from the small island of St. Lucia
and I can tell you that her family traveled to Dallas
often or his family rather traveled
to Dallas often over the years in order to advocate on
their son's behalf. Geiger
was granted early release after serving seven of her 10-year
sentence. She will be assigned a parole officer
and receive specific conditions of her parole
following her release today
and I can tell you again that she is being held at a prison that
is about an hour outside of Waco.
We do have a crew that is on the way there later today my
colleague Lori Brown she will be covering the release
of Amber Geiger today and of course we'll
have the latest developments which you can follow both on air
and online. For now reporting live
outside DPD headquarters I'm Alex Boye for Good Day.
