After a hilarious morning trying to convince Kira to stop throwing a fit and put her harness on, we finally loaded up the Jeep to hit some crazy dirt roads. Our goal today is to do some serious driving and explore some incredible hidden places in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Pro tip from us to you: Make sure you download your offline maps before trying this because you will lose service out here!
Our first big stop of the day was the Historic Rock Cut. This place is absolutely unbelievable! Back in the 1890s, workers hand cut a path through solid rock using dynamite just to build a railroad that never even ended up running. There are still actual railroad ties in the mud from over a hundred years ago! Along the way to find it, we had to cross a super sketchy bridge with a giant hole in it and even found some massive moose tracks right in the middle of the road. We also got to help some fellow explorers find the hidden railroad cut, which was so awesome. Rock cut is located in the Huron Mountain Range. The railroad would have started in Champion, Michigan.
After bouncing around on some intense logging roads for what felt like forever, we finally made it to the highest point in the entire state of Michigan, Mount Arvon! The hike to the survey marker and the beautiful overlook is so worth the bumpy ride. The fall colors are just starting to pop, and you can even see Lake Superior way out in the distance. We signed the official logbook, dropped a Snow Dogs Vlogs business card inside, and let the dogs enjoy the fresh mountain air. Life is short, Make memories with your dogs!
Here are the places we visited in this video! 📍 Historic Rock Cut 📍 Mount Arvon 📍 Mount Arvon Overlook

Well, good, wonderful, beautiful, wet morning, parties.
So the weather said it was going to rain for like two hours last night.
It poured rain in the middle of the night and rained all night long.
It quit about 30 minutes ago, but everything was wet,
which would be nice for the back roads.
It might not be so nice for what our plans were for today.
We might be going over more rocks, which will be mad at you,
which means we're going over slippery rocks.
I guess we'll see what happens.
them little buggers were dropping pine cones
on the roof of the RV, scared the heck out of both
Kira and I mean Eleanor scares more easily than Kira
but even Kira was like I don't like this I want
out anyways I'm rushing her around
and then I'll go get Miss Eleanor and we'll go for a walk and
then we'll figure out the rest of our day little things really
are fearless aren't they I just ran
right from that tree right across in front
of us I'm out on a walk with Eleanor and now she's
completely distracted from what she's supposed to be doing
because they got so close to her she
could almost taste them little red squirrels them
are the ones that were bombing the top of the rig
hell they were the ones that were making you scared
so if you catch one I won't blame you
but trust me she won't catch one all right
are you good she's like dad put my harness on dad you
forgot to clip my clip she's like if you look under
my leg dad my clip is hanging down I'm not
fully ready yet it's like she knew it's like I still have
to hold still long enough for the clip
And yeah, if you're wondering where Kira is, she's hiding.
Are you ready now, Elle? Is that better?
You messed me all up, Dad.
I don't know. It's pretty good.
She's like, I was just taking these extra bonus pets.
Now, I'm just hamming it up.
You ready to go on an adventure? Yeah, see? That's what it was.
Oh, the biggest stretcher on the planet.
Okay. All right, you get this one this time. Kira, we can't go
on adventure without putting a harness on. You know the rules.
Stop! Don't you dare, dad,
dare put that thing on me.
Not if I gotta put that on, I don't want to go.
All right, see you later, Kira. Bye, we're leaving, we're gone.
She's like, you would never leave me behind.
Jump up here and get me.
Oh, she's like, okay, maybe.
She's like, I want to go, I just don't want to put my harness on.
Oh, here it comes,
oh man.
It's like, oh, but maybe not, maybe, okay, I guess.
oh god it's the worst worst
moment of my life she's
a goofball yes
her is we'll wait till she
gets it on and we'll watch her throw
her fit oh here she goes we got eleanor right here she might
shake it off oh she didn't
go up i'll try it yep
shake okay okay thank you
she goes all right oh
no laying down and pouting okay shake again
that was two shakes usually you're done after two
shakes. Are you ready? What are you doing? Yeah.
Okay, we can go now. That's pretty good. Very little
pouting that time. Today I think we're attempting
to make it to Rock Cut where the railroad that
never ran was built.
Where they spent like two million dollars back in the 1890s to build a
railroad to transport ore from Champion,
which is actually the city we're right near, from the
Champion mine out to the lake and they spent all this money
and had like 1500 workers and built a
railroad and it never ran but there's remnants of it in the woods
so we're gonna go see what we can
find all right we're on the road it's
a little sprinkly right now that's supposed to quit within
the next 30 minutes or so and where we're going
is going to take us about what an hour anyway
right now this road looks nice and paved
but uh i don't think it's going to stay this way
We're going into the thick of it.
This is not rock cut,
but this is kind of what it's gonna look like. Holy cow!
We just drove through literally through a mountain.
We're still going. We got a long ways to go.
And they told us it all everything I read said
the road keeps getting worse
and worse and worse. So far it's not too bad. Let's see if
it gets worse and worse and worse.
Driving down this road
and we saw these
massive tracks that's a moose track
that is not a deer yeah
that is not a deer this is perfect
moose country man okay well even
though we haven't seen a moose yet that's really cool
we're looking at the tracks
for where he went he did he crossed the road right here
yep and then right there he probably went off
into there somewhere we can't see him wow look
how red that is over there okay well
that's what they said we are in like prime moose country so
yeah it would have had to have been today
because it rained so we might have just missed him who
knows maybe we'll get lucky there's a hole
in this bridge dear liza dear liza you have my dogs
are you sure you can do this this is crazy i don't like
this there's a big hole on that side
of the bridge but he said there's steel underneath it
so i guess he's crossing it i'm gonna help him
little there we go
there we go okay yeah
that was that was a little
scary i didn't like that yeah
okay let's keep trucking made it back here historical rock cut okay
so before we walk
back here i'm gonna say it
in the video 1500 people 1500 people came back through here to
build a railroad that they never ever used
and they cut this through the rock for this railroad
that never got used and we get to go see it.
This was built in the 1890s. This is history people and
it's muddy. Look it! There's the railroad.
There it is right there. That's railroad. Those are old
railroad ties from the 1890s that are still here.
Oh this is crazy. Okay let's go. Okay we are at
the historic rock cut. Those are railroad ties from the 1890s.
We are in the middle of nowhere.
I can see it! It's right up there!
I've seen pictures... Look at this old railroad!
I have seen so many pictures of this area
and I've always wanted to come back here.
But it is in the middle of nowhere.
Yeah, they thought a train was going to carry iron ore.
That's part of the other reason apparent...
Well, besides the fact that the mine closed.
Rumor has it, the first train they ran down the track,
the only train that ran down the track,
fell off the track on one of these steep grades.
Doot, doot, doot, doot!
Yup!
Wow!
Wow!
A train
was gonna come through here!
Look at how crazy
this is!
They hand cut this!
There was no cars when they made this!
Hand cut and dynamite!
That's what was used to make this!
So a train could come through!
This is crazy! Wow!
Stop digging up critters!
Yeah, quit digging up the critters!
Yeah, a train was going to go through here.
Carry an oar.
Yeah.
It's got to be a good little range to not have one around it.
Yeah, instead they decided to go through, which is just crazy.
Was it worth it?
It's pretty cool, isn't it?
It's pretty neat.
And guess what?
We're not getting eaten alive by mosquitoes
like everybody else said they do.
Yeah, I could imagine.
Yeah, because look at how wet it is.
Kira, quit eating the grasses.
We're not going to continue walking that way because it's super muddy.
But like this is the whole big rock cut that they cut through here.
So that they could put a railroad,
which part of the railroad is still here.
Ah, this is crazy.
A lot of these, this wood is railroad ties.
Most of them are.
Oh, did you find one?
I wanted to see one.
People said there was still some back here, but I didn't see one yet.
It's so squishy.
Hand nailed in.
Because then, that was how they did it.
Oh, careful Eleanor, you're getting tangled.
all right i think we're gonna head our way out
of here we're 20 miles from the main road to get back
here and mostly dirt roads that took us back here
but they would have done this all on horses and
there was no cars back in the day this is this is so crazy
so cool okay let's keep walking so the
train would have followed along in front of us
ore came from that direction and it started in the
mine in champion which we haven't gone to yet
but probably will before we end our camping trip so
crazy i have been wanting to come here for years just
to see this in person it's impressive if you
can make it out here in person it's worth it it's
impressive i'm impressed kira's like i'm a mountain
goat oh good job kira oh guess where we're going
next we're gonna go to michigan's highest point
we're gonna go to the top of mount arvon i think yeah
if we can figure out how to get there from
is that i mean i see why the train went off
the tracks if that's that's gotta be the track that
has to be i mean that's old metal track careful
yeah careful hey you don't see it she's like i
see it i just don't care don't like it look
at that that's crazy it's in the ground there
okay continuing on come on we gotta walk through
the muddy spot we had to come up this hill to get
back here this is deep and that's for sure yeah you can park
at the bottom and walk up this but
what's the fun in that a four-wheel drive pickup truck
that's well lifted high clearance yeah
we're probably leaving this one bouncing around making it down
the hill we're on our way to mount
arvon which it says is going
to take 37 minutes through roads similar to this
random stop on the side of the road
that we're still bouncing down look how pretty the creek
is coming down the side of the mountain
also what are the odds that we just ran into two guys that
were less than a mile from rock cut
and we helped them get there, they almost turned around, yeah and
we said, you know, instead of just telling you it's right behind you
on the left we took them there
we'll take you there, they said they've
been coming up here 40 years and they've never been here
well, they've been all around there, yeah
but they said they'd never been here, well they probably
didn't hear about it until recently
and that's why he asked you how you hear about it, yeah I know I
hear everything, I know you should have probably gave him all
the info and see if he said he read
the book, oh no he said he read the book
so he knew the history of it, so yeah that's how he knew
yeah, like we've been coming up here
for years, how have we never been there? yep, I'm glad we helped
fulfill that, me too, and then I was side
by side, oh yeah we ran into five side-by-sides, all women
that was awesome, I want to be friends with all
those girls, like 16 women, yeah yeah every one
the side-by-sides had your back
online, head northwest, apparently I'm back online and I can
head north, how do I have service here? what
the heck, okay well we got head northwest
yeah this is really pretty, okay after bouncing down
that crazy road we made it, this is the
craziest mountain summit I guess ever
because like the top's right there, that's how far we
I believe this was well-deserved after
the bouncy road that we just went down.
Well, that too, but Silver Mountain.
Yes.
Silver Mountain was insane.
All right, girls, you're going to the highest summit point
in the entire state of Michigan, right up there.
And you get no view from here.
You've got to go over there for the view.
Right.
So the ski lift, the ski jump at Copper Harbor,
is that ski jump the highest point?
I don't know. I'd have to look it up.
I bet it could be higher than this point.
Yeah, I'd have to look it up.
I got all benches up here.
You can sign your name.
Yeah, the overlook's over there.
So we'll walk over there next.
But we had to come to here first.
And we gotta go read the sign.
Look, it says it. It says...
Oh nice! Mount Arvon 1979.238 feet.
Congratulations you have reached
Michigan's highest. We did it! We did it!
We also have to sign the thing and say
that we were here. That's the log book
so people know we were here. That's a cool
spot. I don't know if it's actually a geocache.
I know it's just like a log but
look at that! Look at these people!
So we'll put our name in there. I got a business card I can
throw in there i'll do that i'll throw a business card in there
and this is what jamie was showing
her survey marker shows that it's
the highest point how far back does it go um i think it was
like 2009 maybe when we were here last
but i'm not sure the first part wait it says 5 21 this is
oh they probably do yep this was a updated okay
so they probably do it once a year new book may
Yep, yep, that's what I figured. How cool?
September 14th, September 16th, September 18th.
How cool. All right, we're gonna walk over to the overlook.
There it is. Overlook.
Let's go to that beautiful overlook and the sun is out.
Come on, let's go. It smells like leaves.
It smells like leaves. It smells like fall.
God love it. Oh my goodness. We're going
from the top point to the overlook, which is right
up here. The last time we were up here,
it was pouring rain and we couldn't see anything.
Sniffing the trees. All right, let's get closer.
That's pretty. Look, you can see Superior.
Is that Superior? Yeah, it's gotta be. Yeah.
The direction we're facing. I got lost. We're
in the woods look at all that perfect timing hun perfect timing
for the sun to peek out of the
clouds and light up at least what's closest
to us it's hitting what's close to us really hard
yeah wow see where all the clouds are though
so crazy beautiful that was worth bouncing down that
trail for an hour and a half yeah now i can just sit
on the bench yeah i was over on the bench
oh that's a good idea that's
a good idea i think our timing was perfect hun
yeah because now the sun is kind of moving that way
yeah it was wow it's very pretty we could stay here
for a while but i think
we might go chasing a couple more waterfalls
i think we have time before it gets dark
and if not we'll chase them tomorrow but
there's the view from the top of Mount Arvon beautiful
There it is!
Back to the car we go.
Let's bounce down the road some more.
I didn't film much of this on the way in,
but this is the better part of the road to get to Mt. Arvon.
This is actually like... We're not dodging ruts and...
Oh yeah! I was just saying, you're kidding me. We're not dodging ruts?
Check this out! Yeah!
Look at this! Look at this rock!
That's not too bad. No.
Not a big hole.
Oh yeah! See, there's a hole in the road there.
But you can see like on the side,
but the other road was 10 times worse.
Yeah, that one was definitely.
There was Chipmunk friend.
He was coming to hang out with us.
Yeah, the other road was much worse.
We were only doing like two miles an hour.
Now we're doing like what, seven?
19.
What?
19.
And I'm not kidding.
We were doing like two to five miles an hour.
It's because we're going downhill.
I keep gaining speed.
We're back down to 12.
All right.
Off to some.
Oh, side note.
Pro tip, bring your GPS's and make sure you download your offline maps,
so you don't get lost when you're out here.
That has been the best thing we did, was download our offline maps.
