How to Make Szechuan Sauce from Rick and Morty

Oct 13, 2026

The sauce that brought the galaxy to its knees. From Rick and Morty. No, McDonalds. Or Mulan? Idk, but it’s good stuff, make some.

I used Xeropoint's recipe as a jumping off point, made a few modifications though:

Also, I don't own Rick and Morty. Rick and Morty owns me, and my soul.

What You Need:

Szechuan Sauce:

1 tsp Szechuan peppercorns
1/2 cup sake
1 1/2 TBL garlic, minced
1 1/2 TBL ginger, minced
1 TBL chili garlic sauce
1 TBL balsamic vinegar
1 TBL brown sugar
1 TBL soy sauce
2 tsp cornstarch
1 TBL water

Sweet Nugz:
4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
2/3 cup flour
3 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup water
1 TBL salt
1 TBL pepper
2 cups panko breadcrumbs
Canola oil, for frying

For Szechuan Sauce: Grind peppercorns in a small mortar and pestle or coffee grinder. You can use black pepper if you don’t have access to Szechuan peppercorns. Mix your cornstarch and water together until it’s dissolved. Set it aside.

Place the rest of the ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Once bubbles creep up, add your cornstarch mixture and allow to cook five a few minutes more or until thick and glossy. Set aside.

For Sweet Nugz: Slice up chicken thighs into cubes, about 1 x 2 inches. You don’t have to be precise, but it does help with even cooking. Combine flour with salt and pepper in a bowl. Whisk together eggs and water in another. Place panko crumbs in a third bowl.

Lightly dust chicken in flour mixture. Then, cover it in the egg mixture. Finally, place it in panko and cover each piece completely. Repeat with all chicken.

Cover the bottom of a large non-stick pan with canola oil. Once it reads 350 degrees, add chicken pieces to mostly cover the pan. Cook for 4-6 minutes each side or until juices run clear. Serve with Szechuan sauce.
