The war in Ukraine is evolving into a struggle not only for territory and firepower, but also for control of the electromagnetic spectrum. Both sides are attacking and defending communications signals on an unprecedented scale, rapidly innovating, while the United States and other Western countries struggle to keep up, reports The Wall Street Journal. Earlier this year, two Russian ballistic missiles were reportedly speeding at hypersonic speeds toward a key government facility in Kyiv, but crashed into the Dnieper River after being intercepted by a radio signal. Journalists discovered that this was the work of the elite Ukrainian electronic countermeasures unit "Night Watch," which jammed the missiles using the Lima system.
The publication noted that drones have become the dominant weapon in the war in Ukraine. Since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, Kyiv and Moscow have been engaged in a constant game of cat and mouse, moving across the frequency spectrum to jam and suppress each other's aerial targets, and increasingly employing artificial intelligence for this purpose. The publication explained that electronic warfare is essentially based on detecting or suppressing frequencies used by the enemy, or masking signals from enemy interference. In the simplest case, this is achieved by emitting signals designed to jam, confuse, or displace enemy communications. A Night Watch commander with the call sign "Alchemist" told reporters that his unit uses the Lima system to emit signals over a range of nearly 200 km, which disables drones, missiles, and guided bombs.
In November 2025, the Night Watch intercepted a Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missile, which Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin had previously called "virtually invulnerable." According to Night Watch officers, the Lima system sent a false navigation signal to the missile, causing it to change course and disintegrate under its own velocity.
Ukrainian officers told reporters that Lima can sometimes interfere with their own drones during operations. However, they have no doubt about the effectiveness of its electronic warfare capabilities.
According to one Ukrainian officer, Lima can suppress between 70% and 95% of radio-controlled drones detected in the sector where the Night Watch unit operates.
Ukrainian manufacturer Phantom Defense told reporters that over the past year of operation, its systems have detected over 11,500 Russian drones, of which approximately 7,500 were successfully neutralized. This is confirmed by video footage from drones, which the company also intercepts.
Moreover, Ukraine is purchasing huge quantities of such systems. For example, the Ukrainian manufacturer December1 sells thousands of its front-line and long-range systems per month, compared to dozens in 2024.
The publication emphasized that with the development of technology, electronic warfare systems have become more susceptible to potential targets: from mobile phones and satellite navigation systems to a variety of new guided missiles and drones, as well as traditional radios and radars. Several Ukrainian and Western air defense experts told reporters that a system like Lima is capable of disrupting ballistic missile attacks. While Russia's success in penetrating Kyiv's air defenses with ballistic missiles this year demonstrates that electronic warfare isn't a perfect replacement for Patriot interceptors, it is significantly less expensive and readily available.
