The mysterious death of 28-year-old Russian researcher Daria Shipilova, who worked at an anti-plague institute in the Irkutsk region, has sparked a major international scandal. Amid strict quarantine measures imposed by the security services and a hasty suppression of official publications in Russian media, Western experts have sounded the alarm. Chemical and biological weapons experts suspect that the official "pneumonia" story may conceal a leak of a dangerous modified plague strain or traces of secret military biological research. Newsweek and The Sun write about this. The incident centered on the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute. According to preliminary reports, a young lab technician became infected after a test tube was damaged while working with the Yersinia pestis bacterium, the causative agent of the historic Black Death. After a sharp deterioration in her health during a scientific expedition and being placed on a ventilator, she died in the hospital.
Immediately afterward, Russian authorities imposed unprecedented security measures: approximately 189 people who had been in contact with the deceased were isolated under strict security forces supervision. Meanwhile, official Moscow quickly changed its rhetoric: reports of the plague began to be erased en masse from regional public groups and television news feeds, and the cause of death was officially declared to be "pneumonia of unknown etiology."
The Russian authorities' response drew sharp criticism abroad. Renowned bioweapons expert Hamish de Bretton-Gordon and Professor Simon Clark pointed out a suspicious fact: standard laboratory vaccines failed to protect the scientist. This clearly points to the possibility of working with a specialized, antibiotic-resistant, or artificially modified strain, created as part of covert military programs. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio simultaneously demanded a transparent explanation from Moscow , and the World Health Organization requested official information about the incident. Experts emphasize that, due to the Russian leadership's secrecy and lack of international cooperation, the situation is reminiscent of the worst examples of Soviet censorship, posing a potential threat to global biosecurity.
