The defense forces pushed back the occupiers on a key section of the eastern front and captured more than 250 Russian soldiers. This success marked the third stage of Operation Vivaldi, a carefully planned campaign to seize the initiative in the Donetsk region, Politico writes.
"The Russians surrendered in entire units, along with officers, pilots, and artillerymen," said General Andrei Biletsky, commander of the 3rd Army Corps.
The publication added that during the final stage, Ukrainian troops liberated 51 square kilometers of territory. This brings the total area of land returned to Ukrainian control as part of Operation Vivaldi to 176 square kilometers.
"This operation... has implications beyond the battlefield: Kyiv sees such counterattacks as proof to its allies – and in particular the Trump administration – that the slow but steady advance of Russian troops in the Donetsk region is not inevitable, and... Putin cannot simply wait for Ukrainian defenses and Western resolve to collapse," the publication wrote. It is noted that during Operation Vivaldi, a complex interaction of drones, armored vehicles, artillery, and infantry was used against the occupiers, who were attempting to encircle and capture Liman – a key node in the "belt of fortresses" that has held back the Russian advance for many years.
The publication emphasized that during the operation, the Ukrainian Armed Forces placed particular emphasis on the use of unmanned systems to preserve personnel: from dropping miniature ground robots behind Russian positions to converting Soviet BTR-60 armored personnel carriers into kamikaze robots packed with explosives and directed at Russian fortifications.
Cunning also played a significant role. According to Biletsky, the 3rd Corps misled the occupiers, leading them to believe that the main Ukrainian attack would be launched in the direction of Shandrigolovo and Zelena Dolina. This forced the Russians to deploy reserves to counterattack in this area, while Ukraine launched an attack in the direction of Noviye:
"This led to them wasting their reserves in counterattacks in this very sector. The Russians missed a real blow."
The publication also noted that although the advance of Ukrainian troops has been independently confirmed by analysts monitoring the situation on the front, the Kremlin insists that it has not suffered any setbacks.
In particular, the Russian Ministry of Defense called Ukraine's declared success at Liman a "smokescreen" for Kyiv's "Western curators," claiming that in the northern part of the Donetsk region, only an unsuccessful attempt by "small enemy assault groups" to penetrate was taking place.
