Ukraine makes major gains near Lyman - 51 sq km retaken, hundreds Russian troops captured
Ukrainian forces say they have recaptured more than 50 square kilometers of territory during counterattacks in the Lyman area of Donetsk region and captured more than 250 Russian soldiers. According to Andriy Biletskyi, commander of Ukraine’s Third Army Corps, Ukrainian troops have retaken the settlements of Redkodub, Novoe and Katerynivka, while restoring control over Novomykhailivka and Lipove. The claims were also reported by the pro-government OSINT project DeepState. The advances are part of what Ukrainian forces call Operation Vivaldi, aimed at cutting through the Russian-held Shandryholove salient, pushing toward Lyman and moving the front line farther from Sloviansk. Biletskyi said Ukrainian forces had recaptured 51 square kilometers during the latest phase, bringing the total area retaken since the operation began to 176 square kilometers.
Biletskyi also said Ukrainian troops used modified Soviet-era BTR-60 armored personnel carriers as remotely operated explosive vehicles to target Russian defensive positions. Ukraine claims Russian forces suffered around 2,000 casualties, including killed and wounded, during the fighting, while more than 250 Russian troops were captured. The Third Army Corps has released video showing groups of prisoners wearing Russian military uniforms. A video shared on social media also shows a Ukrainian military official saying the captured Russian soldiers are expected to be exchanged for Ukrainian prisoners of war. He also provided initial details about the operation, saying deception played a key role in its success.According to the official, Ukrainian forces led Russian troops to believe that the main direction of the attack would be the Shandryholove–Zelena Dolyna axis. As a result, he said, Russian forces committed their reserves to counterattacks in that area, while missing the main Ukrainian strike aimed at capturing Nova. The official said units of the Third Assault Brigade played the primary role in the assault operation. Pro-Russian military channels had reported worsening conditions for Russian forces in the area since late August and early September.
