The Second Karabakh War, which began six years ago - on September 27, 2020 - and lasted 44 days, was a decisive stage in the course of the nearly 30-year-long conflict.
September 27 – Memorial Day is a sacred day in the memory of the Azerbaijani people, filled with both deep sadness and great pride. The Azerbaijani people have gone through severe trials with their native lands being occupied for many years. The 44-day Patriotic War that began on September 27, 2020, wrote one of the most glorious pages in the history of Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani Army, under the leadership of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, began a just war for the restoration of our territorial integrity. The people and the Army, united like a fist, signed a great Victory. The greatest moral support of this Victory is martyrs. They proved their love for the Motherland not with words, but with their lives. As President Ilham Aliyev emphasized in his address on the Day of Remembrance: “Their blood will not and did not remain on the ground.” The unparalleled bravery, heroism and selflessness shown by Azerbaijani soldiers and officers on the battlefield have become a source of national pride for our people. The last wish of martyrs was the liberation of our native lands. Today, that wish has come true. Life is reviving in Karabakh and East Zangezur, people who have been longing for their homeland for years are returning to their native lands. The large-scale construction work carried out in the liberated territories is one of the greatest expressions of the realization of the sacred wishes of our martyrs. After 2020, a new political and security reality has taken shape in Karabakh. In April 2023, Azerbaijan established a border checkpoint on the border with Armenia in the Lachin direction. This step ensured control over the state border and strengthened security. On September 19, 2023, Azerbaijan launched anti-terrorist operations in Karabakh in response to provocations by Armenian separatists. The operation lasted 23 hours, and an agreement on a ceasefire was reached on September 20. After that, the process of disbanding the armed structures of the separatist organization in Karabakh and handing over weapons began, separatism was eradicated from historical lands, and Azerbaijan's state sovereignty was restored. Thus, the process that began in 2020 with the restoration of control over most of the territories entered a new stage with the full establishment of de facto state control over Karabakh by Azerbaijan in September 2023. Thus, Azerbaijan put an end to 30 years of occupation.
