Russian troops are gradually approaching key cities in the Donetsk region , and some of the fiercest fighting of the year could begin in this area this fall. This will pose a serious test for the new Ukrainian Armed Forces command, Reuters reports .
Russian troops are slowly advancing toward Slovyansk and Kramatorsk, the main cities of the so-called "belt of fortresses." According to military analysts, Russian units are already less than 15 kilometers from Slovyansk and Kramatorsk. Both cities are being subjected to increasingly intense drone and guided-air bomb attacks.
The situation is expected to escalate significantly this fall. Michael Kofman, an analyst at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, believes September and October could be the heaviest fighting of the year. He also believes Russia may attempt to exploit worsening weather conditions to launch new mechanized attacks. "As weather conditions worsen, drones become less effective. And this is precisely where the Russians are trying to restore mobility on the battlefield," Kofman explained.
At the same time, Ukraine has already demonstrated its ability to deter such attacks. In particular, the Russian offensive near Dobropillia in the summer failed to produce the expected results. The defense of the Donetsk region will be one of the first large-scale tests for the new Ukrainian military leadership, led by General Mykhailo Drapaty.
In July, he replaced Alexander Syrsky as Commander-in-Chief and began forming a new troop command system. Analysts estimate that Drapatiy is attempting to transfer more authority directly to operational-level commanders.
Russian troops continue to slowly advance toward Sloviansk and Kramatorsk – towns that, along with Druzhkivka and Kostiantynivka, form the so-called "belt of fortresses" of Ukraine's defense, CNN reports .
Kramatorsk, long an important logistical hub for the Ukrainian military, is increasingly coming under Russian attack. According to Irina Rybakova, press secretary of the 93rd Mechanized Brigade, attacks are occurring dozens of times a day.
"Attacks happen dozens of times a day. Dozens of cars, municipal buildings, residential buildings, administrative buildings, and garages have been damaged. They're simply setting everything on fire," she said. According to her, the city streets are almost deserted in the morning and evening. During the day, people also try to move as cautiously as possible due to the constant threat of drone strikes.
"They could strike at any moment," Rybakova noted. Analysts at the American Institute for the Study of War note that a rapid Russian breakthrough is still unlikely. At the same time, the situation is gradually shifting in Moscow's favor.
Russian troops are conducting infiltration operations and are slowly advancing towards Slavyansk and Kramatorsk, as well as in the Konstantinovka area.
According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russian forces advanced or penetrated approximately 124 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in August. This is about a quarter of the area Russia seized in the same month last year.
Despite the slow pace, Moscow is gradually creating a threat to Ukraine's "belt of fortresses" – a chain of fortified industrial cities that form the backbone of Donbas's defense.
