Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jets dropped GBU-62 guided bombs on a Russian position containing ammunition and personnel. As a result of the precision strike, the Russian military position was destroyed. Earlier, pilots flying MiG-29 fighter jets struck a building where the occupiers had set up a UAV control post.Aerial reconnaissance identified the enemy’s location and relayed its coordinates to Ukrainian Air Force crews. A precision strike with an AASM HAMMER aerial bomb destroyed the building and the enemy personnel inside.
Recall, Ukrainian Air Force is reintroducing the R-60 air-to-air missile, developed in the 1970s, into service with MiG-29 fighters. This step is intended to compensate for the shortage of key missiles for intercepting Russian unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles. The transition to older weapons systems comes amid increasing Russian airstrikes using high-speed aircraft. These targets include unmanned aerial vehicles such as the Geran-3, Geran-4, and Geran-5, as well as Banderol cruise missiles.
Some of the new Russian missile systems are capable of reaching speeds of up to 700 km/h. Such speeds significantly impede the timely response of conventional ground-based air defense systems or small unmanned aerial vehicles. In July, the target interception rate for Ukrainian UAVs dropped to approximately 50%, but recently recovered to 60-70%. However, this rate is still significantly lower than the approximately 90% achieved against the slower Geran-1 and Geran-2 UAVs. To protect its airspace, the Ukrainian military had to deploy fighter jets, including Western-supplied F-16s and light Soviet-era MiG-29s, to hunt aerial targets.
The MiG-29 can carry R-27, R-73, and R-60 missiles. The highly maneuverable R-73 is generally preferred for engaging fast-moving targets. However, Ukraine has been forced to reallocate a significant portion of its R-73 munitions to other missions. Due to a shortage of ammunition, engineering units were forced to reinstall R-60 missiles on MiG-29s.
The R-60 was designed for a very different battlefield. According to MiGFlug, the short-range, infrared-guided missile entered Soviet service in late 1973. It was built primarily for close-range aerial combat, with its seeker designed to detect the heat produced by an aircraft’s engine. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the time when the Ukrainian Air Force regarded the weapon as outdated. The newer R-73 was considered considerably more useful and had become the preferred missile for engaging fast-moving Russian drones. But four years of combat have changed the calculation.
